Amazon.com Review

In the late 1950s, the great Ben Hogan consolidated his considerable knowledge of the golf swing into a small volume called Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. Nearly half a century later, it remains the cornerstone of every intrepid hacker's instructional library, and one of the bestselling sports books of all time. But there was always something missing from its pages: photos. As marvelous as artist Anthony Ravielli's accompanying drawings of Hogan were, they weren't the same as seeing the Wee Icemon himself in action. Surprise! Ravielli modeled those drawings on several rolls of film he took of Hogan, and those photos, recently discovered, are the heart of The Fundamentals of Hogan. For golfers, they are like finding a piece of the true cross; there has never been a more perfect swing than Bantam Ben's. If some of the pictures in Fundamentals are just explanatory poses--Hogan gripping the club, Hogan standing at address--and the majority of the swing sequences are actually not true sequences at all but, given the technology of the time, individually posed photos at appropriate intervals of the swing, no matter. They convey what they need to, providing a closer glimpse of the master's mastery. Swing guru David Leadbetter tees up the accompanying text, analyzing Hogan's swing, parsing Hogan's swing theories, and adapting what Hogan knew to fit the rest of us. Leadbetter knows most of us can't possibly re-create the effortless power of Hogan's fluidity, but that doesn't mean we can't incorporate bits of Hogan's technique into our own herky-jerky hacks. Like Hogan, Leadbetter is obsessed with golf's mechanics, and while Hogan managed to breeze through Five Lessons with the help of the splendid writer Herbert Warren Wind, Leadbetter often gets mired in the kinds of technicalities that lead to the "paralysis by analysis" that plagues over-thinkers when they step up to the ball. Still, the team of Hogan and Leadbetter makes a twosome you can't help but learn from if you're willing to pay attention. --Jeff Silverman

From Booklist

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons (1957) remains one of the most influential golf instructionals ever published. Anthony Ravielli's drawings illustrated the original work, but he also took numerous photographs of Hogan's swing; now those photos have been rediscovered and combined with text by contemporary teaching legend Leadbetter. The result is a kind of updating of the classic Hogan swing philosophy, with Leadbetter using the photos to analyze Hogan's theories. The idea of a book showing where the immortal Hogan went wrong may well offend purists. It shouldn't. What Leadbetter does here is put Hogan's words in a contemporary context, taking into account not only modern equipment but also, more importantly, the needs of the average golfer. Applied literally by middle to high handicappers, Hogan's swing secrets, Leadbetter argues persuasively, might very well produce disaster rather than improvement. Still, despite the good sense Leadbetter makes throughout, many readers will find themselves wishing Hogan had an opportunity to answer back. For anyone interested in the complex architecture of the golf swing, Leadbetter on Hogan makes essential reading. Bill OttCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Leadbetter is of course one of the most famous instructors in the world of golf, ever. Here he takes Hogan's book "Five Lessons," which he and pretty much everybody relevant considers to be the foundational touchstone of modern golf swing instruction, and illustrates some slight modifications to consider for the average player. One must remember that Hogan himself was, although not a "big" man in physical stature, was truly an extraordinary athlete with a body molded meticulously for golf, and Hogan made his swing for himself specifically... which doesn't negate its power as THE fundamental swing, but not everybody has the twist, the thumbs, etc., that Hogan had.So, yes, the Leadbetter book gave me "permission" to modify slightly to fit my own body and has been an extremely valuable aid, but it is NOT a replacement for Hogan. Hogan's book should be digested FIRST, and then reviewed under Leadbetter's guidance.

Worth it for the pics alone. David leadbetter has some great tips in here on how to adjust the grip. Where Hogan wanted the user to experiment from his base of knowledge, Leadbetter does a better job of explaining how changes may change your swing. Example - He assumes Hogan lined his left thumb up parallel to club face and kept a short thumb to compensate for his known draw/hook. He explains that a stronger grip might be better for the average player with a tendancy to fade/slice. Then there are drills he ads to help the reader. Pics of Hogan are the prime benefit to this book. The illistrations from 5 fundementals were good, the pictures are great!!

This is an indepth analysis and interpretation of Hogan's perspective of the golf swing by the best modern teacher alive today. Leadbetter's view clarifies and adjusts Hogan's teachings to modern times eloquently. This book is not for the faint of heart wishing to better understand the essential and detailed bio-mechanics of the golf swing. I would suggest his other books and/or DVD's to get started. With respect, I disagree with Mr. Leadbetter's thoughts on Hogan's own hooking remedies, his grip changes and the "secret" cupping of the wrist to open the club face at the top. Early in Hogan's career he had an extremely long backswing, prompted by an extremely long hip turn. The result coming down was a very active lower body to compensate for a latent upper body. The club face would arrive from the outside and closed causing the snap-hook under pressure he hated. As his swing became more compact he was able to control it's action much better. D.L. touches on this but emphasizes the different grip and the wrist cupping as Hogan's "cure".I also disagree with D.L.'s thoughts on moving the head back laterally with longer clubs. It's OK as long as it returns to the same position at address. Just another unnecessary variable IMHO. The head is the fulcrum of the swing. Keep it there.Don't buy this thinking you'll find "lightening in a bottle". The golf swing takes study, focus and discipline to learn how to properly execute. As Hogan believed, anyone can break 80, even if they devote one-tenth the time he did to being one of the greatest students of the swing and players of all time.

Hogan is my hero. very complicated, but worth every penny. anything that I could get from Hogan is worth the price.

This a fantastic book for pictures of Hogan demonstrating his swing techniques taken for the illustrations in the "Five Lessons". Leadbetter makes a very detailed analysis of Hogan's swing and some interesting observations between what Hogan said in his book and how he actually swung. A must for every Hogan fan. However, as soon as Leadbetter starts giving his own "My Views", watch out. In "The Plane Truth for Golfers", Jim Hardy differentiates between the one plane (Hogan, Snead) and the two plane (Leadbetter). All of Leadbetter views on how to improve on Hogan's swing are two plane ideas which Hardy points out are disastrous for the one plane swing. Read Five Lessons and this book for Hogan's swing and forget all the sections labelled "My Views" or you will be swinging the golf club like David Leadbetter, not like Ben Hogan!5 stars for Ben Hogan; 3 stars for David Leadbetter.

great book

Fantastic book with very descriptive pictures :) HOGAN is also a LEGEND

After reading Ben Hogan five lessons this book only added to the developement of Hogan's theories about the proper swinging of the golf club and brought it up to date.

Review

"Peter Kurie offers a richly detailed look at just how profoundly private wealth can shape public life in a single American city. In Chocolate We Trust tells a fascinating—and cautionary—tale about the power of philanthropy in modern times."—David Callahan, Founder & Editor, Inside Philanthropy"Peter Kurie has written the definitive book on Hershey's legacy, an in-depth analysis of how Hershey's Trust has dominated and transformed Hershey, Pennsylvania over a hundred-year period. It is not just a thorough history covering the origins of the trust through to today's modern scandals, but also a deep look into how trusts and empires can be built which last long after the founder's death. It's a lesson for us all."—Steven Davidoff Solomon, UC Berkeley School of Law"No better or more poignant account has ever been written of how the legal instrument of the trust, meant to conserve private wealth, has so thoroughly constituted cultures of community in the United States—well into its postindustrial era, amid its rust belt zones."—George E. Marcus, coauthor of Lives in Trust"A native son of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Peter Kurie has conducted an ethnography of this company town named after the chocolate magnate who founded it. His vivid and scrupulous chronicle of a charity torn by financial scandals proposes a fascinating descent into an obsolete epitome of paternalistic local capitalism which still survives in a time of aggressive global philanthropy."—Didier Fassin, Institute for Advanced Study

Great read! As someone from Hershey, I found the depiction of the town to be spot on! Kurie does a great job describing and dissecting the relationship between old "Hersheyites" who grew up in the 1950s and 60s and the "Newbies" in town as well as the complex and often contentious relationship between the townspeople and the trust. Highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about this historic place!

"Can business take care of people? Can it build and sustain communities? Can it save lives?" The ramifications of these questions, asked by Kurie in the introduction, take the importance of this book well beyond the boundaries of the town itself. You need not have grown up in ol' Chocolatetown, nor even have visited, to learn valuable lessons from this example (and from Kurie's great work in investigating it). Though, as someone who did in fact grow up there, I enjoyed one interviewee's assessment of Hershey as being "a very expensive fantasy," and I applaud Kurie's inclusion of the union history (e.g. the '37 workers' strike) and current struggles in international labor rights in the town's often sugar-coated story.

Well done, Mr. Kurie! It was fascinating to learn so much about the history of the town named for the man behind the Hershey bar, the Milton Hershey School Trust and its multi-billion dollar endowment, and the ongoing controversies regarding the management of this charitable trust. The author tells of the uniqueness of Hershey, Pennsylvania from its inception to today, and one gets the sense that change is not welcomed by many of its residents. IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST gives the reader much food for thought.

I adored IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST. It is an inspiring story beautifully and brilliantly told. The author has combined the mesmerizing human story coupled with Milton Hershey’s business acumen and vision. The resultant trust turned thousands of disadvantaged children into productive citizens for more than a century, delighted billions of chocolate lovers around the globe and benefited thousands of patients of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. For me IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST was a personal journey. In the 1960s my wife and I got involved in the (then) little-known sport of curling in Darien, Connecticut, where we participated in competitions (called bonspiels) with curling clubs around the East. One of the most active was the Hershey Curling Club (since disbanded) where we went on several occasions. During one week, I met a pilot for Allegheny Airlines(forerunner of US Airways) who had bought a house in Hershey and regaled me with stories of life in Hershey. For example, on his first morning he arose at 4:00 a.m. went down to the kitchen to make coffee and read the paper. It was his regular routine that cleared his head before driving the 12 miles to Harrisburg to catch his first flight of the day.Staring out at the darkness that first morning he noticed an automobile heading past his driveway. The car stopped, the headlights were turned off and the driver sat in the darkness for a few minutes, then turned on the headlights and slowly moved on. Same thing the next day. And the next. And the next. The following week his phone rang. It was the Hershey police who said he probably noticed the car at the end of his driveway in the mornings. As a new resident, the police wanted to get a sense of his daily routine, so if anything changed they would be alerted. Another story the pilot told was the town’s tree trimming service. Hershey workers would come by in the fall, trim all the dead branches and stack them in the woodpile. No charge—one of the benefits of living in Hershey. When I recounted this story to friends, some felt creeped out. Others, including me, loved the idea.We also got to know members of the Hershey Curling Club—among them Joe and Muriel Eby. Joe was a lovely guy who founded a local real estate company. Low key and self-effacing, Joe never talked about his 37 missions as a bomber pilot over Germany in WWII and his 6 oak leaf clusters. One day at breakfast he mentioned he had been a student at the Milton Hershey School in the 1930s and asked if we would be interested in seeing the school. We jumped at the chance. Joe gave us a private tour of the buildings, the kitchens. dining room and the classrooms, highlighted with tales of life at school and vivid memories of Milton Hershey (who died in 1945). I treasured the experience.IN CHOCOLATE WE TRUST is the story of this uniquely American business model—a school with a $12 billion endowment that owns a company with a $21 billion Market Cap. Here is the genesis of the town, the residents over the years, the fights to maintain the trust intact and the inner workings and philosophy of the school. Plus the author makes the intricacies of the complex trust absolutely clear (and fascinating) to a non-lawyer like myself. Many great charitable trusts have been created in America over the years—the Shriners and St. Jude’s children’s hospitals, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations to name but three, but Hershey—town, gown and company are one of kind. It can never be replicated. A great reading experience!

Kurie’s wonderful new book is about the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, its mythic, chocolate-making founder, and the local charitable school he endowed—and so much more! Casting an anthropologist’s eye on the interrelations between the town, the company, and the charitable trust, and focusing on telling incidents and compelling narratives of change, Kurie shows us how money and law together shape the elementary conditions of everyday life in our “Second Gilded Age.” This book is remarkably vast in its reach, touching on charity, business, education, high finance, work, and the lives of laborers, finding all of these at play in the ordinary incidents of an rural-suburban town—admittedly one with an exceptional role in the history of American capitalism and philanthropy. Throughout his “tour . . . of the Hershey ecosystem,” Kurie clearly and crisply stages the core issues at the heart of his research: the morality of commerce and the commerce in morality that large charitable trusts and foundations perpetuate. Not only does this book deserve attention from scholars of charity, philanthropy, and the anthropology of law, “In Chocolate We Trust” also makes a valuable contribution to US ethnography at large by drawing our attention to the long-standing institutional and legal conditions for community, especially as these come under new strain.

Wonderful to see some of Michael's work again. I have missed seeing books published with his work on the cover. A joyful read as well as looking at all the pictures within.

excellen t reproductions if a little small.

I am an avid collector of SF&F art books for about 30 years now and have all the previous Michael Whelan volumes. I was also one of the Kickstarter founders for this project, and with all the hype and promises and in-between reports I have expected so much more for THE art book about Michael's body of work… :(Upon opening the parcel, I was immediately utterly disappointed. As said, I own all the other books by Michael, and even the first one, Wonderworks (from 1978!) is considerably bigger than this tiny volume! The second art book from 1987, Works of Wonder is almost twice as big, and many images in BEYOND are there as well, only – and this again is in itself disappointing – bigger and/or with better printing quality. We are talking about a 30 years old book here, folks, standing for nearly as much on my shelf… Really really sad.And then there was the previous magnum opus, The Art of Michael Whelan from Bantam Books (1993), with playful, conceptual changes in paper and design in different chapters, again wonderful printing quality in huge, square layout. In all of these 3 previous volumes, focus was clearly on Michael's magnificent art, with usually full-page, plain illustrations (sometimes with a nice white border), only a few images were spread over the middle of the book (which is always a sad sight in art books, virtually cutting the landscape image in 2 parts). Also, these volumes built upon each other, the amount of images used from previous books was under 20-25%, which is totally okay for retrospectives. Michael produces a lot of art, so it was normal to look at the new stuff.Entering BEYOND… :(The book is at least 50-60% full with old material. Which is okay – I don't know, how much art Michael did produce in the past 25 years since the Bantam book, but to include so few of them is really a bummer. The only acceptable reason for including so much of the old art would be, if this book is considered by Michael and his editors as THE MAGNUM OPUS of his body of art, some sort of a crown on his fantastic career in art. This margin has in an incredible, underwhelming way NOT been met!The book is tiny, which leads to the folding/spreading the landscape images over the middle of the book. The portrait images on the other hand suffer from descriptions captured INTO them! Also, despite all the information during the Kickstarter campaign about Michael looking through proofs, not being happy with first, second etc. samples, the printing quality and colors are in many images not necessarily better than in the previous 3 art books. Of course, I cannot compare to the original images in life, but I am a bit skeptical if it was really that much worth of time and care, if on the other hand the whole book itself has so many shortcomings (size, spreading pages, text on images, not that much new material, quite uninspired preface by Robert Williams, seemingly no order in positioning the pictures – not by year, not by subject, not by color, not by book author etc.)I am getting a very unwell feeling, that this is only a pro forma collection of Michael's art, and the size and other limits mentioned above have to do with his business of selling high-profile, quite expensive art prints. If your images would be available in wonderful printing quality, huge size and without any text on the picture in an art book, some people might end up buying the art book instead, maybe even scanning and printing images themselves from it. So maybe – *conspiracy theory on* - it was a dedicated choice to cripple this art book in order to sell more prints? Maybe. Maybe not.But as an art book, in my view BEYOND is sadly a failure and utter disappointment. To see how it's done, even if your main business is in gallery quality art prints, check out for instance the fantastic last 2 volumes by Daniel Merriam, Taking Reality By Surprise, and Built On Dreams Alone – now THOSE are art books deserving that name!

I got my copy at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018.It's hard to believe, but it's been 25 years since Whelan has had an art book published. The last one, for which he was very much "hands on" in terms of design, is a classic art book in every sense of the word. This paperback book, with a smaller trim size (roughly 6.5 x 10.25 inches), was the "show catalog" for an exhibit of his artwork in Irvine, Calif. (A smaller run in hardback was published, available exclusively as a signed, limited edition of 1500 copies--the signature on a bookplate.)The art is a mixture of his classic science fiction & fantasy art, with a good representation of his more personal art projects & gallery art, in color. Both the paperback and hardback have sewn signatures, so the book won't fall apart. (Books with the oxymoronic "perfect binding" will see their spines crack over time.)The art is well reproduced with color that accurately matches the original art, according to what I've seen of his originals at recent shows. The paper stock is glossy and picks up the colors well. I think the reproduction is this book's strongest suit, along with the selection of the art.New and old Whelan fans will find this an indispensable addition to their book collection. It's affordably priced, well printed, and in terms of page count has a nice, hefty feel, though the pages are not numbered. I would have liked some commentary by the artist, especially for the personal pieces that would benefit from a little context, but the fantasy & sf pieces of art need no explanation if you have the original novels on which they are based. (If I had a choice, I'd prefer to see the book illustrations have titles linked to the original publication source; i.e., "The White Dragon" from 1978 is from Anne McCaffrey, and it's the first cover he had done for her books. (It was also printed in The Donning Company's 1979 book WONDERWORKS, which unfortunately suffered from a bad printing job that muddied all the colors throughout; its appearance in BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION pops in comparison, in every way.)Bottom line: If you love fantasy or science fiction art, if you're a Whelan fan, or if you want to give someone a gift of the best in imaginative art at a very low cost ($25 retail), this is the book you'll want to buy, or give as a gift: a beautiful book, printed with fidelity to the original art, with a wide selection of art to suit any taste, this book is worth your time, attention, and money.

I bought the limited signed edition and was immediately impressed by the quality and imagery. Suffice it to say that if this version is anything like the LE, BUY IT!

As someone who lives in the area of the escape & whose husband is a retired NYSDOCCS SGT, it was refreshing to read a book written with the sole purpose of exposing the truth & solidly backing the CO’s & all LEO’s involved in the story of a very tense 3 weeks. This story tells the escape plan & describes all of the main players in great detail. Readers will understand the financial & staff cutbacks that helped lead up to this unfortunate incident. The reader will also learn how Cuomo & Albany in General contributed to, but were never thrown under the bus for, Policies & Procedures they implemented. There are twists & turns in this story that MSM never reported. The author, Charles Gardner & his wife Penny, did their homework & research! This book will appeal to all LEO’s out there, as well as anyone who was caught up & mesmerized Nationwide as this manhunt unfolded. Charlie captured the appreciation the locals felt for the CERT Teams, NYSP, Border Patrol etc as they endured brutal conditions in the rugged Adirondack Mountains searching for 2 murderers. Even though we know the ending, it still is an exciting read. I highly recommend this book!

Major Guest’s book was excellent and told the escape story well from the Police perspective and beyond. This author goes into the Correctional perspectives and beyond, better explaining the results gained when correctional funds are cut and a do more with less mantra is embraced.Way too many DOCs are seeing budgets cut, with an out of sight, out of mind belief. Hopefully no other escapes or death result, but North Carolina, South Carolina, and Delaware prison systems have not been so fortunate. Thanks for the hue and cry!

We were both struck by the authenticity of Charlie Gardner’s Dannemora. We’ve both read a few books and seen Ben Stiller’s series on Dannemora and feel Mr. Gardner’s book is the most accessible of the lot. While understanding the need for a TV series to be commercially viable, Ben Stiller accentuates some of the more lurid details of the tale and some of the other books get bogged down in minutiae. Charlie Gardner tells the tale from both a local’s point of view and an insider’s unique perspective lending both veracity and compassion. You never are drawn into a false sense of relating to either of the escapees nor the culpable parties. The book also avoids long character exposes on any of the principle players but manages to maintain objectivity and a balanced view of the folks caught up in the mess. Perhaps the most striking sense is how so many people could have prevented the whole disaster by just follow the rules or speaking up. None of this feels like pure speculative hindsight. Again, Mr. Gardner places the blame by stating objective information as well as rightly placing compassion upon the communities that had to deal with the fallout as well as lauding the efforts of the agencies charged with the monumental tasks of dealing with the situation at hand and the aftermath. A very enjoyable read, highly recommended.-Dean and Tracie Arnold

I was taken with the information that Charlie Gardner provided in his book. Knowing what I know about the prison and the physical plant layout this book was written with a no holds barred attitude. The revelation of all the facts regarding the escape and the history which culminated in the escape kept this reader from setting the book down. Having lived through some of the tension that the area had to endure and the effects on so many people really made me appreciate Mr. Gardners willingness to "bare it all"! Thanks for putting it out there! Darn good book!!

This book is a "real and accurate account" of horror that we the people of the north country lived through when these two killers roamed through our back yards, our woods, and our lives during the month of June 2015. Mr Gardner captured the fear and the truth of the daily events leading up to the death of Matt and the shooting and capture of sweat. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the who,the where and the when. l personally had a part in this story and the professional way that my information was collected and presented was commendable. kudos to you Mr Gardner.......

Forget everything you saw on the news/made-for-TV-movie or read in newspapers/online! Looking for your next book to read? This one is a must! You will be blown away. True-crime enthusiasts will not be disappointed.

Amazing Job. I lived it and relived it through the book.

Just finished reading this wonderful book. Very well written with information about the manhunt for these escaped convicts. I could hardly put this book down even though I knew the ending. Thank you Mr. Gardner for this wonderful read.

I read this book with interest. It held my attention. The writing was good. I am from the south and thisbook just didn't hold together for me. The first partof the book was so promising, but it did not produce. There was a real story to be told about Blanche, her son,Marcus, Eddie, Grace and Miz Ora. That was enough, itwas real and needed to be fleshed out. Unfortunately the pageswere filled with hard to believe "stuff". There was sooomuch stuff! There were Christmas gifts, shopping, decorating, food, silver, china. There was an unnecessary romance and the totally completed lives of dozens of people. There was one real plot and all of the other was unnecessary. We have a rape, and a murder....enough already! Tell us howthe town reacted, tell us how the murdered boys family reacted, etc.You can do it Cassie, just make your imagination stop working solong and hard. Tell us less.

I don't know what drew me to this book, ratings, available on Kindle and Audible for the right price, or maybe the ratings were already good? I really wasn't sold when I started it, it seemed like "To Kill a Mockingbird" to me at first, and after all is Cassie Dandridge Selleck another Harper Lee? But I listened and occasionally read it up in my Kindle library.. So back and forth I went. The writing, the characters drew me in. They were very well developed and quite deep and yet each stood independently in this book yet they were so woven into each other. A family evolved along with the story. The characters all learned and kept learning. I can't give away the plot. If it is the same topic as TKAM in some ways, it is far different in approach. The story is about what happens when very real circumstances push us into very bad decisions and the consequences of it. I hated for the book to end and but was not disappointed in the story. This story sings. Yes, Cassie, you are a young Harper Lee. Keep writing. I always hoped to meet Harper Lee, I guess, so did everyone else. But I like your story and hope you keep writing on this level. Maybe I can see you at a new book signing.

The Pecan Man is Cassie Dandridge Selleck’s self-published debut novel. Several people, I believe, mentioned that it was part To Kill a Mockingbird with various secondary novels. I can see the comparison, the easy, flowing prose, the narrator’s, Ora, voice, her style of meandering through days. Honestly, Ora’s voice reminded far more of the movie version of “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café.” Ora’s voice, to me was very similar to Jessica Tandy’s / Ninny Threadgoode. The Pecan Man has it’s own little mysterious interwoven stories that create the same kind of easy dialogue involving at least one dark secret.Ora Lee Beckworth, a widow, lives in a charming house near downtown; she can sit on her front porch and watch life pass by. Since she’s recently widowed, she hasn’t done much but do just that. With her husband gone, though, she does need a man to tend the yard work, and maybe a few odd jobs around the house. When she notices the “Pecan Man,” a somewhat raggedy-looking, homeless man on with a beat-up old bike wandering in her neighborhood, she asks him if he’d be interested in doing some yard work on a weekly basis. She already has a housekeeper, Blanche, who helps with everything else she needs inside.Needless to say, at least one neighbor, Dovey, across the street, of course, has to step in after a few weeks of the Pecan man being seen in their neighborhood, it just isn’t safe, she says. He makes her uneasy, scares people, and well, after all, you wouldn’t want people driving through here thinking he actually lived there, would you? This was a short, delightful read. I really look forward to reading more from Cassie Dandridge Selleck.

The unlikely story of a white middle-aged widow in 1970's Georgia befriending her black maid and a homeless man and opening her home to them and to the maid's children is heartwarming on many levels. A relatively privileged white Southern woman blossoms emotionally as she discovers the joys of family. Her mindset changes from one of benevolent charity to that of an equal and even to being the person on the receiving end as her new "family" gives her a life she hadn't known she would love - or even could have. The secret pact she enters into puts her at risk, but she discovers that she has a passion for doing what is truly right, as opposed to making a social showing of helping the "less fortunate." Ultimately, this is a tale of redemption on many levels. There is no fairytale happy ending. Real life keeps happening. But there is sacrifice, reconciliation and true the possibility of grace in this story. I enjoyed it so much that I scarcely got anything done in my actual life and I devoured the complexities of plot and humanity in this novel. The voice of the narrator is also a joy - resolute, and strong, but, at the same time self conscious as she realizes some of the assumptions she had made throughout her life. A gem!

Review

(–Tullian Tchividjian, Pastor Principal de la Iglesia Presbiteriana de Coral Ridge)'The Jesus Storybook Bible is unlike any other storybook. True, that's to be expected when you combine the mesmerizing illustrations of Jago and the award-winning writing of Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Brit with an uncanny knack for storytelling. Not only is each story as vividly illustrated as it is portrayed, but also each tale is telling one Big Story--the Story of Jesus. Even the Old Testament stories of 'The young hero and the horrible giant' and 'Daniel and the scary sleepover' come full circle to Jesus, the greatest Hero, King, Lover and Rescuer the world has ever known. (More to Life Magazine)''The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name' disproves the adage that you can't judge a book by its cover. Jago's award-winning cover art is a foretaste of the whimsically insightful and richly colored drawings that await you on every one of the book's 351 pages. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book....Jago the illustrator, and Sally Lloyd-Jones the author, are a good pair. She brings the same creativity and sense of humor to her telling of the Bible's stories....But Lloyd-Jones's writing isn't cutesy. She has a grasp of the profound. How does one explain to a child the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane, and his prayer of surrender to his Father? Lloyd-Jones does it as well as any biblical commentator....The title and subtitle are even better than the book's delightful illustrations and narrative -- because they provide, in one deft stroke, the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of the whole Bible. 'The Jesus Storybook Bible' says it all: The Scriptures are not merely a collection of stories designed to teach moral lessons. As Jesus explained to the men walking the road to Emmaus on Resurrection Sunday, the whole Bible is about Jesus. In the words of the subtitle, every story whispers his name....Lloyd-Jones manages to show again and again the presence of Christ in all the Old Testament Scriptures, and the presence of the Old Testament Scriptures in the life of Christ.' (Christianity Today)The Jesus Storybook Bible is, in my opinion, one of the best resources available to help both children and adults see the Jesus-centered story line of the Bible. From Noah to Moses to the great King David--every story points to him. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle--the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, as the Story unfolds, children will pick up the clues and piece together the puzzle. A Bible like no other, The Jesus Storybook Bible invites children to join in the greatest of all adventures, to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God's great story of salvation--and at the center of their Story too.

Don't get me wrong, we absolutely love The Jesus Storybook Bible, with the slight exception of an error in the story of Rachel and Leah (Jacob waited one more week to marry Rachel, not seven years - he worked seven years more after the marriage). For kids ages 5 and up there is perhaps no equal in getting the big picture of the Bible and how it really is all about Jesus. If I didn't love the book so much I'd put two stars on this edition. In our bilingual home we were eager to get the bilingual version of it. But the Spanish translations - I don't know if they were done by a computer, or by someone who was not a native speaker, or by someone who was not even an Advanced speaker. Some of them are just odd, some are funny, and a few are so bad I refuse to read them. Publisher, please hire someone to fix it. I'll do it for free, just please fix the Spanish.

We just adopted 5 children from Colombia and this book is an excellent start to a relationship in reading every night before you go to bed with your children. They read it aloud in Spanish and we read it aloud in English for them. They really enjoy it and it is great sharing our faith with them.

As a bilingual parent, trying to raise bilingual children, I was really looking forward to being able to read this book to my girls in Spanish. We absolutely LOVE the English version, and I was really hoping to be able to have the same experience in Spanish. But the Spanish version is sometimes too formal and uses language that is not really common, which one would expect for a children's book. In parts, it seems it was translated literally, which does not sound right.

This bible story book is a top seller due to the script correlating with the lovely illustrations. However, this bilingual edition would be wonderful for anyone who reads Spanish but wants to improve their English. I gave this copy to a missionary couple serving in Mexico who gives these out to literate families who promise to read it to their young children. Next time I will send a case of this edition to them.

The Spanish translation in the book is not good at all. I am a Spanish teacher from Spain and I like to get bilingual books for my soon. I wanted to get him a children's bible (he's 4) to get him into understanding God and the stories in the Bible in both languages. i end up making up the Spanish part because the translation is bad. The pictures are wonderful and we love all the colors.

I thought I was buying the Spanish version. Turns out it was a bilingual version. Also the front cover had glue and the edge was peeling. I just got it today so I'm gonna read through it.

This is a great book for working with children - especially bilingual kids. We used these on a recent Central American mission trip. Our team would sit for 20-30 minutes at a time with children. The kids read the Spanish and we followed along in the English story. It was a wonderful tool for our team. We bought 12 of them to use and then left them as a curriculum resource for the church there.

I hate to have to leave only 3 stars for this Bible, since I really do LOVE it and we read it every night. It has wonderful vivid pictures and tells the story in a clear and thorough fashion, pointing all of the stories back to Jesus. Each section is about 4 pages long, which seems perfect for a nighttime before bed reading for my 3-year old. With that being said, one review mentions a few grammatical errors in Spanish - I have to say, there are more than a few. There are multiple errors on almost every page - from grammar, to spelling, to misuse of words. I would love to see a new edition put out with solid Spanish editing, because I would definitely change my rating to 5 stars!

I’m having a hard time deciding exactly how I feel about Deal with the Devil. On the one hand, I was utterly wrapped up in the story, and I’ve never read anything quite like it. On the other, the arrangement between Forge (Jericho) and India is a little lopsided – or at least it seems that way on the surface. All in all, though, I’m completely fascinated by the entire plot, all the players, and attempting to decipher how things are going to play out as the series continues.I was there for Jericho Forge, his intensity, and his desire to avenge those who did him wrong. He often came across as heavy-handed, but there was something underlying all of that bravado that made me care for him and want to know all his secrets. I was also incredibly affected by the way he thought about India, even as he was trying to insist she was nothing but a means to an end. The man definitely knows no bound when it comes to taking what he wants and protecting what is his, so I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in the next book.India is a little more of a question mark for me. Though Forge can read her like a book, I feel like her poker face – as far as what we’ve been allowed to see as readers – is nearly impenetrable. She’s a wild card (pun not intended), and she manages to surprise me with startling frequency. I live for the moments she lets her walls down, and we get a peek at the true her and can’t wait to unpeel all the layers she’s hidden behind.Deal with the Devil is spectacularly well-plotted and fast-paced. Every time I thought I was going to have a little time to catch my breath before the next shoe dropped there was another revelation flying at me. I have so much to think about, so many strings to follow and try to untangle to solidify my theories before the next book, I don’t know if I’ll get anything straightened out before Luck of the Devil releases.Deal with the Devil is the first book in Meghan March’s Forge Trilogy. This series is one continuous storyline written in three volumes and must be read in order. The Forge trilogy is unrelated to Ms. March’s other series. Deal with the Devil is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by India and Forge.

Let me preface by saying that I loved the Fifty Shades Trilogy. Never felt like the lead female was ever forced into anything. There was a real chemistry between the two and the build up was realistic. I am all about mystery, experimenting, and non-traditional starts to relationships. However, I could not even get through the first half of Chapter 1 of this book. The heroine is a world-famous poker player. Smart, savvy and calm. Obviously can take care of herself and succeed in a male-dominated arena. However, when she loses a bet with the male lead that requires her to have sex with him, and she believes that she can never play another poker game again unless she has sex with him because that would look bad on her for not carrying through with a bet, now you have totally insulted me. It's one thing if the two were just totally hot for each other and wanted a one-night stand. I'd be on board with that. But, in this day and age, a woman is has to have sex with someone to save her reputation? That's just beyond bad taste. Hello Harvey Weinstein....come on. Stop trying so hard to keep up with the others of hot trilogies. This is pathetic.

This book is such a disappointment. I've loved every one before this... what a mess. Definitely not up to MM's norm. Hope it's just a blip. Look forward to the next trilogy, I'll reread the other book's in the meantime.

I can't be too specific in this review in order to avoid anything that could be spoilers, so just know that if you have read about and loved Meghan March's heroes like Mount, Kane, and Creighton then you will love Jericho Forge! He is an alpha, powerful, intuitive, ruthless, risk-taking billionaire. But he is also burly, rough, and rugged. He is used to getting what he wants and does not get attached. He can read people and see their truths, and then use it against them. He has an enemy and he is determined to make him pay in any way he can.The woman who catches his eye is intelligent and street smart. She is confident, savvy, proud, strong, and untrusting of men. She has a fiery temper and can be bold and impulsive. And she challenges him like no other woman ever has. She's got problems. He is willing to help...for a price. Will she sell her soul to the unknown devil in order to take care of someone she does care about? This woman finds herself in a world of intrigue, wealth, hidden agendas, secrets, lies, suspense, and danger. It is hard to tell who to trust and who is scheming who. She just wants to feel safe and to keep those she loves safe as well. She could just be a pawn. She could be a game changer. But only one man truly has the answers and he tends to share only when he feels necessary.I got sucked right into this new spin-off world. I loved the new settings and vibe. LOVED Jericho! Oh my, he is stoic and likes control, but I loved when he would be surprised by his own thoughts and feelings. She is a bad*** heroine who is not afraid to take him on. I really liked this couple together...their banter, their passion, and how they challenged each other. I enjoyed getting both of their points of view since they were both guarded and did not share all the details with the other. There is a lot going on under the surface and the mysteries kept me guessing. I was swept up in their story and sent reeling with some twists. I cannot wait to read more of their story and see how things fit together.

I just hate books that leave you dangling! The writing is jerky and India and Forge don’t seem to have any idea what they are doing or what they want. It’s incoherent.
