One Hundred Years of Solitude really isn't as difficult or confusing as some reviews make it seem. People make it seem like it's impossible to get through so many repeating names, but even when the characters share a name, almost every single character (until the last generation--and by that point the first characters are long gone so that it wasn't really confusing) has a unique name. How is that confusing? And anyway, it doesn't take too many chapters or a genius to figure out they all share the same names for a reason. Also, I must say, if you don't like the first 50-100 pages, you probably aren't going to like the rest of the book. It stays like that... Plus, the first Jose Arcadio Buendia is one of the more entertaining characters in the book, in my opinion. But, I think Aureliano Segundo and Remedios The Beauty were the highlights in this book. I was cracking up throughout their scenes.Although I feel I missed a lot about what was going on symbolically whilst reading (mostly a lot of the religious stuff), I still found this book to be extremely enjoyable. It's inspiring and surreal, whimsical, funny and sad--and it all causes a person to feel very introspective, because it blends so many aspects of what makes up a person's life. I looked up some of the themes and motifs after reading to make sure I caught everything, and I prefer many of my own interpretations. And I think Gabriel Garcia Marquez meant to write it in a way that was a more personal experience. At the end notes, he mentions in an interview how he wanted to capture the way an abuela tells stories to her grandchildren-- and I got that vibe the whole time. And a lot of times, the surreal in crazy old latin american stories is what makes you remember the life lessons behind the story. And I feel like that's what happened here.But again, I feel like most people I know wouldn't like this book, and I can see where they're coming from. It definitely isn't for everyone. And I must stress that that's not coming from a pretentious place. His writing style will be frustrating to many readers I'd presume, because it's really just incredibly unique. But, if you can get past the style (long paragraphs, little fluctuation in narration, mentioning things that haven't really happened yet, or no main protagonist... etc) and the repetition of names, it really isn't super complicated or anything.It isn't perfect, but It's great. And even though I started this review planning to give it four stars, after writing it--I think it's an important enough, and intricately weaved enough, and a unique enough a piece to warrant a 5-star from this fella.
this is a stunning work, with a translation that is worthy of the author. i was an english teacher and a colleague had dual citizenship with colombia and she read both versions of this work and couldn't decide between the two. i've only read the english translation, but even the translation puts it in the top tier of all the novels i've read. that's good news and bad news maybe. that means that the work is easily available to english-speakers, but that doesn't make it any easier to read as a work of literature. my guess is that it can be read on several levels at once, but i've never talked to anyone about the novel who wasn't a lit major. this work is so different and so interesting, you should try reading it no matter what your school experience with literature has been.
Confusing? Lengthy? Lot’s of characters, all with practically the same name? Yes, but all for an intended purpose. I picked up this book for an AP Lit project and browsed through some of the reviews to see just what I was about to read. There were plenty of “oh, this is so confusing†and “there are just too many of the same names†reviews. But there were also the reviews that focused on the enriching side of the book. The side that people often overlook. So I figured I would give it a try. It is not a book I would normally have picked up, but it soon surprised me. I remember flipping to the first page and reading the very first line of the book: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.†Already I was drawn in. There was so much going on in that first line, the rest of the book just had to be interesting too. And it didn’t fail. The book goes through generations of families as they tell their story over time. There is no set protagonist, which bothered me at first, but then I became comfortable with it as I continued reading. Throughout the book you discover your favorite characters with their quirky personalities. The Buendia family is full of weird adventures and mystical encounters. From the gypsies to the invention of ice, the book jumps around from sentence to sentence illustrating the personality of this family simply in syntax. There is love, civil war, death, magic, and redemption in it’s many pages. Many reviews had issues with the numerous similar names and found the book simply confusing. But if you were reading the book with a close eye, you realize that it was all for a reason. It was written almost “as if the world were repeating itself.†And as you struggle to read, “time put things in their place.†Yes, these are quotes from the book itself and are so direct to the theme and overall meaning that they seem to be overlooked. The book’s confusing almost repetitive nature was to illustrate a grand motif. The circular motif. How everything comes around in time. That fate is such a huge force in everything that happens. Overall, I would give this book 4 stars. That seems low for all the good things I had to say about it, but in the end I rate it lower than 5 stars simply because I struggled to relate with it. It was so different from the books I normally read that it became hard to really be drawn into it. I did love however the circle motif and how everything wraps up just as it should. Sure, all of the crazy adventures and writing style was interesting and unique, but it didn’t capture me personally as well as it may have captured someone else. If I were to read this again (or another book by Marquez), however, I believe that I would feel more comfortable with the writing style and mystic side of the culture and I would relate to it better. I would suggest this book to someone who wants to try and read something different from a lot of other “mainstream†books out there.

This is not a coffee table book, it is more a of a memoir with images. But, the stories that Leifer tells about his subjects, or pursuing a shot, or relationships are terrific. There are so many great stories about not only his images but his experiences. Leifer might not be the greatest photographer, but his images are iconic, and the stories behind the images make them legendary.
Great book...photos as well as text! A must for every sports fanatic. Leifer's photographs are phenomenal and the stories behind these accomplished athletes a tribute to their drive and diligence.
First bought the book with high expectations for the photos. They did not disappoint, but the highlight was the author's narratives. And the many covers from SI and Time evoked memory after memory. The book's cover photo of Ali was especially poignant given his death in recent days. Thank you Neil!
Outstanding reflects from the great photographer Neil Leifer that goes beyond sports. A must read.

These 1920s-era cruisers were obsolete, but Pearl Harbor forced them to remain in service. Marblehead escaped the Japanese assaults in Borneo, and Raleigh absorbed a torpedo hit at Pearl Harbor. Most of these small cruisers performed dull but necessary patrol work. Book mostly features photos from naval maneuvers or yard refits. Not as many photos as in others in the series -- the book on the USS Wichita alone has a great many more views -- but I suspect these ships simply weren't documented as well as others. No combat shots. Brief descriptions and histories of each vessel in the class. Greatly enjoyed this snapshot of these obscure vessels in US Navy history.
This 56 page book has a wonderful assortment of photos and details of each of the 10 vessels that comprised the Omaha class. I have a good number of other Warship Pictorial books by this same author in my collection and this one is every bit as good. Steve Wiper has done the Omaha Class justice as it's one of the lesser known classes of cruisers that served our country during WWII.

I have been teaching for 7 years and I have never seen such an amazing response to a book. Students are begging to read it over and over again. I loved the ability to make choices and talk about the outcomes. I loved how sometimes Danny's brother egged him on and we could talk about not having control over someone else and only having control over how you respond. I loved that when Danny asked for a snack he didn't get chocolate and we could talk about "getting what we want" versus "making a good choice." I also love the forgiveness from Danny's parents when he has a bad day and the encouragement to make the next day better. I am a pre-kindergarten teacher, so I have four and five-year-olds. I have checked out dozens and dozens of books on behavior from the library and tried many different techniques and I could not seem to get my students to grasp the concept of how making one choice can lead to another etc. etc. Not only do the kids in my class have so much fun choosing Danny’s choices in the story, but they also love seeing how the story can change depending on what they decide for Danny. They are finally grasping the concept that not only can one bad choice lead to another and have an effect on others, but you can also change a bad morning into a great afternoon or vice versa. My students constantly ask me if we can “hang out with Danny†and I have everyone’s attention when I pull out this book, even the most difficult behavioral students. I wholeheartedly wish there were more books like this! My students are actually involved in the story instead of just listening. Active participators certainly learn more! Five stars all the way!!!
This is a wonderful book to help children understand the role their choices play in what happens next. My son is almost 8 and can easily tell what Danny should do, so he made all the right choices the first time through. But...he wanted to read the book again making all the wrong choices, then do a pattern of 'right/wrong' then 'wrong/right'. The book does such a nice job of showing how Danny's choices impact his day along the way and how his day can have ups and downs. As my son and I debriefed we talked about what choices my son would make, and he admitted times he'd want to make the right choice, but might make the wrong choice. We then talked about how everyone makes mistakes and what could he do to make amends when that happens.I am a graduate student going into school counseling. I like to try things out on my own son to see if I will use them with students in the future. I will definitely be using What Should Danny Do? and hope the authors create additional books.
For the first time, I wished I could give more stars than 5. Absolutely amazing book for 5-6yrs old. Got a lot freebies like a poster, stickers and a personal note from the authors.Our sincere request, please write more books like this. The illustrations are equally marvelous as well. 100/100 for this book. :)
What an amazing book! "What Should Danny Do" is a choose your own adventure book that empowers children (and adults) to see the consequences of their own actions. As a parent, this book is so powerful. Flipping back and forth between scenarios open the discussion for the kids to see how Danny's day would change based on the decisions he makes...should he throw a tantrum for not getting the plate that he wants for breakfast or should he let it go and learn to share. Each situation is relevant to real life examples and drives the point home that our children have the ability to change their life. I bought this book for my home and one for my waiting room at my office. And then a 3rd to give as a present. This is an ideal book for parents, teachers, and anybody who takes care of kids. Read it together or on your own. The story line concept is so cool and the illustrations are phenomenal. Go buy it. 10 stars!
My kids live in a time of so much choice- so many options. Everything is available at the impulsive click of a button. This book helps my kids focus on the choices they make, the paths they can choose, and the results that follow. It returns the power to choose into their hands. It reminds them to be mindful of their actions and reap rewards for better choices. I can't think of a more powerful book for my children!P.S- It's also super fun to read ;) My 7 and 10 year old both love it!
I’d seen this type of book before- with multiple endings - but in books for older kids. This is exactly the right thing for 4-5 year olds... it shows a kid for whom the reader can make and change choices to change how his day goes. Life actually works exactly like that, whether you’re 5 or 50, but this is written in kid terms like this: What should Danny do: stomp really hard on Charlie’s foot, or tell Charlie that what he did wasn’t nice? And we turn to a different page and see what happens next based on which option the reader chooses. My 5 year olds were in a loud disagreement earlier tonight and I was able to suggest that they can choose what to do, giving them a couple of alternatives like the book does.. They were playing together again literally a minute after I said that. That book has paid for itself already! I highly recommend it.
The idea behind this book is really cool. You flip to different pages depending on what the child chooses and it changes the story. However, the consequences were very vindictive and dramatic and there was not emotional support modeled from the parent. If you practice gentle parenting and your goal is to maintain a good relationship with your child, this is not the book for you.
This book is ingenious. The scenarios are all very relatable and happen on a daily basis to all kids. Makes them realize that they have "The Power to Choose" between the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do all the time.
