I read this book with interest. It held my attention. The writing was good. I am from the south and thisbook just didn't hold together for me. The first partof the book was so promising, but it did not produce. There was a real story to be told about Blanche, her son,Marcus, Eddie, Grace and Miz Ora. That was enough, itwas real and needed to be fleshed out. Unfortunately the pageswere filled with hard to believe "stuff". There was sooomuch stuff! There were Christmas gifts, shopping, decorating, food, silver, china. There was an unnecessary romance and the totally completed lives of dozens of people. There was one real plot and all of the other was unnecessary. We have a rape, and a murder....enough already! Tell us howthe town reacted, tell us how the murdered boys family reacted, etc.You can do it Cassie, just make your imagination stop working solong and hard. Tell us less.

I don't know what drew me to this book, ratings, available on Kindle and Audible for the right price, or maybe the ratings were already good? I really wasn't sold when I started it, it seemed like "To Kill a Mockingbird" to me at first, and after all is Cassie Dandridge Selleck another Harper Lee? But I listened and occasionally read it up in my Kindle library.. So back and forth I went. The writing, the characters drew me in. They were very well developed and quite deep and yet each stood independently in this book yet they were so woven into each other. A family evolved along with the story. The characters all learned and kept learning. I can't give away the plot. If it is the same topic as TKAM in some ways, it is far different in approach. The story is about what happens when very real circumstances push us into very bad decisions and the consequences of it. I hated for the book to end and but was not disappointed in the story. This story sings. Yes, Cassie, you are a young Harper Lee. Keep writing. I always hoped to meet Harper Lee, I guess, so did everyone else. But I like your story and hope you keep writing on this level. Maybe I can see you at a new book signing.

The Pecan Man is Cassie Dandridge Selleck’s self-published debut novel. Several people, I believe, mentioned that it was part To Kill a Mockingbird with various secondary novels. I can see the comparison, the easy, flowing prose, the narrator’s, Ora, voice, her style of meandering through days. Honestly, Ora’s voice reminded far more of the movie version of “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café.” Ora’s voice, to me was very similar to Jessica Tandy’s / Ninny Threadgoode. The Pecan Man has it’s own little mysterious interwoven stories that create the same kind of easy dialogue involving at least one dark secret.Ora Lee Beckworth, a widow, lives in a charming house near downtown; she can sit on her front porch and watch life pass by. Since she’s recently widowed, she hasn’t done much but do just that. With her husband gone, though, she does need a man to tend the yard work, and maybe a few odd jobs around the house. When she notices the “Pecan Man,” a somewhat raggedy-looking, homeless man on with a beat-up old bike wandering in her neighborhood, she asks him if he’d be interested in doing some yard work on a weekly basis. She already has a housekeeper, Blanche, who helps with everything else she needs inside.Needless to say, at least one neighbor, Dovey, across the street, of course, has to step in after a few weeks of the Pecan man being seen in their neighborhood, it just isn’t safe, she says. He makes her uneasy, scares people, and well, after all, you wouldn’t want people driving through here thinking he actually lived there, would you? This was a short, delightful read. I really look forward to reading more from Cassie Dandridge Selleck.

The unlikely story of a white middle-aged widow in 1970's Georgia befriending her black maid and a homeless man and opening her home to them and to the maid's children is heartwarming on many levels. A relatively privileged white Southern woman blossoms emotionally as she discovers the joys of family. Her mindset changes from one of benevolent charity to that of an equal and even to being the person on the receiving end as her new "family" gives her a life she hadn't known she would love - or even could have. The secret pact she enters into puts her at risk, but she discovers that she has a passion for doing what is truly right, as opposed to making a social showing of helping the "less fortunate." Ultimately, this is a tale of redemption on many levels. There is no fairytale happy ending. Real life keeps happening. But there is sacrifice, reconciliation and true the possibility of grace in this story. I enjoyed it so much that I scarcely got anything done in my actual life and I devoured the complexities of plot and humanity in this novel. The voice of the narrator is also a joy - resolute, and strong, but, at the same time self conscious as she realizes some of the assumptions she had made throughout her life. A gem!
