Review

In this book, Farrell Dobbs, one of the organizers of the landmark strike of 1934 against the trucking companies operating in Minneapolis, provides an insider s look at the struggles of Teamster Local 574 and how the Local became a vigorous social force in the city. Rebelión Teamster is the first of four books in the Teamster Series published by Pathfinder. The series consists of: Rebelión Teamster, Poder Teamster, Teamster Politics and Teamster Bureaucracy. Rebelión Teamster and Poder Teamster are available in Spanish. Jack Barnes, an American Communist and the National Secretary of the Socialist Workers Party, provides a thoughtful introduction to this book explaining that Rebelión Teamster is the documented history of a solid experience in the struggle between classes... Photographs and newspaper clippings add to the historical value of Dobb s accounts. Recommended for adult collections in public and academic libraries. --REFORMA journal

One of the three great books by Farrell Dobbs. This inspirational account makes for a good read if you ever get into trade unionism.

Pathfinder has just (June 2 2004) Come out with a new updated edition. Perhaps the most interesting feature is a discussion between Jack Barnes and Mexican and Mexican American coal miners from Utah fighting to organize their mine about how this book speaks to the needs of workers in the 20th Century. There are more pictures, and expanded notes.Farrell Dobbs was transformed by the struggles in this book. He had wanted to be a judge. He had been a forman. He had tried to run a small business. The depression threw him into the coal yards of Minneapolis. He became one of the workers who helped unionize the coal yards, then unionize the truckers, then turn the Teamsters into an industrial union, because they had the opportunity to meet up with the revolutionary Marxist ideas supplied by communists like the Dunne Brothers. This is the story not of Dobbs alone, but of the great Minneapolis Strikes of 1934 that led the way for the CIO. This is the story of how workers can bust through the conservatism, the apathy, the company loving bureaucracy in their unions, to demonstrate their power. This story is told by a man who was there, as a coal yard worker, a truck driver, the union's organizer. We need to know how to do this now! While Amazon may say this book is not available from time to time, it is always available on the Pathfinder Amazon partner Z store that you can reach by clicking on new and used at the top of this page.

To any working person who wants to know how to fight the bosses and win, you have to read this book. The author, Farrell Dobbs, was born into a working-class family in Missouri in 1907, worked his way into a management job, started his own business, and hoped to go to law school and become a judge. But his plans were cut short by the great depression of the 1930s. In 1933, he found himself working in a Minneapolis coal yard and met coworkers who asked him to join an effort to organize the workers into a branch of the Teamsters union. The rest is history. In 1934, Dobbs played a central role as the members of Teamsters Local 574 carried out a series of three dramatic strikes that succeeded in making Minneapolis a union town. To do this, they had to battle the boss-led Citizens Alliance, the police, the top Teamster bureaucrats, as well as a "friend of labor" Governor, who talked out of both sides of his mouth. This book gives a blow-by-blow account of all of this, and is a real handbook for how to conduct a strike effectively. Key to their victory was a union leadership that included members of the Communist League of America, a revolutionary socialist group, which later became the Socialist Workers Party, which Dobbs joined and led on a national level for decades. If you like this book, you'll also want to read the three other books in Dobbs' Teamster series, Teamster Power, Teamster Politics and Teamster Bureaucracy.

THIS REVIEW IS ALSO BEING USED FOR TEAMSTER POWER WHICH IS A CONTINUATION OF THE STORY PRESENTED HERE. THE POLITICAL POINTS ARE VALID FOR BOTH BOOKS.ORGANIZE WALMART! ORGANIZE THE SOUTH! These are the slogans which outline the tasks that the American labor movement, particularly the organized trade union movement under the AFL-CIO and the Change to Win Coalition, need to address. With those tasks in mind it was refreshing for this old militant to re-read Farrell Dobbs' analysis of the fight to organize the truckers in the 1930's. This volume, and an earlier one detailing the struggles to organize truckers in Minneapolis, are little handbooks for model labor organizing. Dobbs himself was instrumental in organizing the truckers of Minneapolis in the great strikes in that city in 1934 and as documented here the later, successful organizing of the over the road drivers in the Midwest which created the modern, powerful Teamsters International Union. He was, more importantly, a supporter of what later in the decade became the Socialist Workers Party- American section of the Trotsky-led Forth International.Whatever else may be true about Dobbs this man could organize workers. Why? The last sentence in the previous paragraph gives the answer. In the modern labor movement it is not enough to be a militant on the picket line but one must also have a political approach to labor actions. With the merging of corporate and governmental interests on the labor question in the modern state militants better think politically. As the December, 2005 unsuccessful struggle of the transport workers in New York City demonstrated militants better know the enemy and his tactics well. Moreover, these days, unlike in the 1930's when it went without question by advanced workers, it is as important to know there is an enemy. On the other hand think what it would be like to have a political militant like Dobbs organizing the drivers of those 7000 trucks that Wal-Mart owns to distribute its merchandise. You get my drift. Read what he has to say carefully. To even introduce this militant labor leader of the 1930's is to state the fundamental problem of today's labor leaders. They do not exist in the modern labor movement. Yes, there are militants out there in the rank and file but militant leaders are no longer produced and that is the rub. Unlike the strategy of independent political action which underlined Dobbs' work the strategy of today's labor leaders can be summed up in two words- class collaboration. That is a strategy of dependence by the labor movement on the good will of the `friends of labor', essentially the Democratic Party- not to fight for victory in the streets but by what at times amounts to parliamentary cretinism. Just start to organize Wal-Mart seriously or organize the South and militants will quickly see who their `friends' are.The natural audience for this book are today's labor activists so the reviewer would draw attention to the following issues that Dobbs and his associates had to confront and which militants today will confront in any serious organizing efforts. (1)The role of the labor bureaucracy in limiting the scope of struggle. (2) The role of governmental mediators, courts, legislation and the above-mentioned `friends of labor' in curtailing the struggle. (3) The role of scabs and others, including government troops, who will try to break the up the struggle. On the positive side- the following should be noted; have your own publicity organ to get out your message; organize other labor and pro-labor sources to assist in strike action; anticipate that governmental and corporate sources will try to `freeze' workers out so have your own transport, commissary and medical operations. Finally, in the words of the old Wobblie song by Joe Hill- "Don't Mourn, Organize!!*******Added January 7, 2012No question over the past several years (really decades but it is just more public and in our face now) the American working class has taken it on the chin, taken it on the chin big time. What with job losses (and jobs not coming back), paying for bank bail-outs, home foreclosures, effective tax increases (since the rich refuse to pay we pay), mountains of consumer debt, and student loan debt as a lure for the kids there is little to glow about in harsh light of the American Dream. In short, it is not secret that the working class has faced, is facing and, apparently, will continue to face an erosion of its material well-being for the foreseeable future something not seen by most people since the 1930s Great Depression, the time of our grandparents (or, ouch, great-grandparents).That is this condition will continue unless we take some lessons from those very 1930s and struggle, struggle as a class against the imperial capitalist monster that seems to have all the card decks stacked against us. And that is where the late labor leader (and, for a time, revolutionary socialist) Farrell Dobb's little book on his (and his comrades) experiences in organizing the truckers of Minneapolis, Teamster's Rebellion, can help inspire new generations of working people, organized, unorganized, unemployed, homeless, houseless, and just plain desperate, to get out from under. Specific conditions may be different just now from what they were in Dobbs' 1934 Minneapolis but after re-reading this little organizing gem there was something very, very current about what our forebears faced down there and then.I write this little review with a special purpose, a purpose driven by the rise of the Occupy movement, in mind. Although the Occupy movement is right now as I write going through some growing pains there are some disturbing trends that I have witnessed since its inception. The main trend for my purposes here includes a rather standoffish attitude toward the working-class, especially the organized working-class, as central to the struggle for a more equitable society rather than as just another numbered victim of American imperialism's relentless assault on, well, if not the ninety-nine percent then some large percentage of the population. And that is where the lessons of the 1934 Teamster's strikes comes in as a helpful antidote to that notion. As well as very helpful guide to what Occupy already does fairly well-organize auxiliary aspects of the class struggle like kitchens, libraries, speakers' bureaus and the like.A few highlights will illustrate my point. Minneapolis was a notorious anti-labor commercial town (flour, copper, farm goods, etc.) for generations leading up to the 1930s. It had a well-organized, ruthless, and, when necessary, armed business-centered Citizen's Alliance that mostly kept out the unions for generations. Therefore a central demand, yes a front and center in your face demand, of the working-class there was for independent union recognition by the bosses (they recognized only their own "company" unions, or better, dealt with each individual worker separately). That was the first order of business for those militants, including the leading revolutionary militants (mainly Trotskyists in this situation but others as well). Along with that desire was the idea that those allies (inside workers who loaded the trucks, etc.) of the truckers should also be organized in one industry-wide union rather than the old craft union idea of separate unions for each category of worker (in short, to break the old "divide and conquer" strategy of the bosses and comfort zone of the labor skates). Now this scenario may not immediately strike any current Occupy sympathizer as particularly germane for today's struggles but that view would be short-sighted. For what Minneapolis (and the other main class battles of the 1930s in places like San Francisco, Toledo, Flint, and Detroit) demonstrates is the social power of the working class to hit the economic royalists (the name coined for the one- per centers of that day) to shut the capitalist down where it hurts- in their pocketbooks and property. The bosses will let us rant all day, will gladly take (and throw away) all our petitions, will let us use their parks (up to a point as we have found out), and curse them to eternity as long as we don't touch the two "p's." And that is why it is profoundly mistaken to assume that the working class is only along for the ride like everybody else in Occupy. The various recent West Coast port actions is a somewhat skewed way (the longshoremen refused to cross the community picket lines rather than directly shut the ports themselves but the effect was the same-ports shutdown for a period) demonstrate that same proposition.Beyond that central premise that is bed-rock to understand this book is filled with all kinds of information that is also important to know for any major show-down struggle with the bosses. Such class-war actions have to be carefully planned using every resource available (not just some happenstance thing put together at a whim, or less). So reading about the soup kitchens, the hospital, the make-shift garages (to transport roving pickets, a necessity in the many-sited trucking industry), provisions for entertainment, and a labor daily newspaper to counteract the bourgeois biases of the press sounded awfully familiar to me, and should to you. Some parts Occupy has got right, got right right from the start. What, disturbingly, has not been right or has been some what blurred today is a clear understanding of the relationship between the bosses and their state (the cops, National Guard, mayors, governors, courts, prisons, etc.) and we the risen people. The militants (beyond the hard "reds") in Minneapolis probably had some illusions in those institutions starting out, although probably less than those today, a few generations removed from those hard class battles. They soon "learned" about the cops in their three-stage (three separate strike actions from February to August 1934) fight. Learned about cops mostly at the wrong end of a night-stick (or tear-gas grenade) in the famous "Battle of Deputies' Run". About the courts and their rough, very rough "justice." About the militia and who it serves. About the lying bourgeois newspapers and their scare tactics. About who were, and were not, the so-called "friends of labor" from Roosevelt on down. And even about the treachery of the labor skates, particularly the head of the very Teamster Union they were trying to join, Daniel Tobin. What they also learned though, and we can learn as well, is that through combining together in solidarity in large numbers, through being politically clear-headed, through keeping independent of the main political parties, and most of all having the determination to fight for what you want you can win sometimes in this wicked old world. Read this little book and see if you agree.

In rereading this book I was struck by what a wonderful thing it was that these rank and file workers were able to change history by creating, out of their struggle, an example of revolutionary unionism. It was wonderful for them and is wonderful for us, because it shows what we can do today. This book also tells the story of how Farrell Dobbs learned that he could trust in both the fighting capacity of the working class and the leadership capabilities of its vanguard. Through powerful examples Dobbs describes the dog-eat-dog viciousness of capitalism and contrasts it with the desire on the part of young fighters to break through the backstabbing and open up a road to workers' solidarity. This book could change your life. Amazon may list this book as unavailable from time to time, but it's always available from the Pathfinder z store. Click on "new and used" at the top of the page.

"Hurricanes are serious business, but Gibbons uses a picture-book format to detail their destructive powers without the information ever becoming too frightening. . . . [An] intriguing introduction." —Booklist        "This informative overview follows a format similar to Tornadoes!. Cartoonlike watercolor images filled with details accompany simple facts, such as the five categories of hurricanes and information about wind speed and surge heights. I have a 4 & 3 year old who request to read this each night and has the text memorized. On top of learning about weather and science they have really picked up a lot of geography from this and the Tornados! book by this author and are able to point out states, bodies of water & countries. I cannot reccomended this book enough for kids of all ages!

I always love Gail Gibbons! This is a good book that shows how hurricanes can affect us. Good for lower elementary grades.

My 6 year old grandson is fascinated with weather and storms but primarily tornadoes. He has now taken an interest in hurricanes since he lives in an area which has them. I found this book and a few others for his age and my daughter says he likes them a lot.

This is my son's (age 6) second Gail Gibbons weather-themed book. He loves how she describes each category - making it easy to compare the wind speed, storm surge and damage across the categories. The illustrations are excellent and the story is informative. And we both get a kick out of the fact that the author of a hurricane book is Gail. Highly recommend for any child that is fascinated by weather.

This book tells the story about hurricanes in a childs frame of mind. Nothing too scary or frighting. Very simple but true facts on what they are and how they work. Read it to 5 classes of 2nd graders and it sparked class discussion. Wonderful well written book!

Good book for helping kids cope with natural disasters.

My grandson used this for a report. He loved it.

Really helped cement what we were learning about hurricanes.

This book is typical of Daniel Dennett's other offerings. It's extremely meaty, rich in metaphor and analogies, often deep and remarkably thought-provoking, linguistically clever, wide ranging to the point of being distractingly digressive and covers a remarkable swathe of intellectual ground, from computers to neurobiology, from word acquisition to elevator design, from computer bugs to biological viruses, from Charles Darwin to Alan Turing. That being said, it's hard to say what this book is really about since it's about so many different things. As another reviewer pointed out, Dennett's digressions can sometimes be distracting and it is difficult to see the central point in his argument. The book also doesn't seem to present a novel hypothesis per se. Its ostensible purpose is to describe the evolution of human minds and thinking and what makes them special. It succeeds in this endeavor to a large extent, but still doesn't end up really explaining key concepts like consciousness (which Dennett thinks is an illusion). The main device that Dennett uses for unraveling intelligence and minds is the concept of memes which was introduced by Richard Dawkins. According to Dennett, the co-evolution of genes and culture through memes is what makes human minds special. Again, gene-culture co-evolution is not a new concept, but Dennett explores it with verve and insight.I think the main function of this book is to serve as a springboard for exploring some very clever analogies between software and biology and for appreciating the naturalistic evolution of human language and thinking. There are gems scattered throughout the text: for instance, the concept of "competence without comprehension" which is a version of Dawkins's "blind watchmaker" analogy, and the very revealing insight that simple things like nail cutters might be impossible to imagine arising through natural selection while complicated things like human minds can well be imagined evolving this way. There are also excellent discussions on how children acquire words and how these words then interact with genetics and culture to produce very human features of the brain like foresight, introspection and planning for the future. Some of this material constitutes an argument against intelligent design. The analogies are elegant and often clever and Dennett's play on words can be very subtle; for this reason several paragraphs may have to be read a few times to really grasp their essence. In this sense the book has to be savored and resampled like fine wine.In general then, I enjoyed the book but found it too digressive and slow-going in parts. On several occasions I found Dennett slipping into academic language, with the academic references and jargon to boot. Reading this volume requires patience and careful study, and this patience will often be rewarded. But it's not what you would call an introductory or popular treatment: if you are not familiar with standard popular works on evolution, language and psychology by writers like Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Matt Ridley or Daniel Kahneman it would likely be pretty hard going. But as a sampling of scattered gems which reveal themselves through rumination and constant reflection, it's hard to find a writer as clever and insightful as Daniel Dennett.

The Evolution of Minds is an attempt to frame how to understand the evolution of consciousness and the use of meme's in that process. It has much to offer for those interested in comprehension and what distinguishes competence from comprehension but its content comes with the burden of a cloudy narrative that meanders into personal disputes with other philosophers and a lack of organization and sequencing in much of the content. I am glad to have read the book but there were large sections which I felt added little with a high likelihood of confusion due to poor organization. The book is split into three parts and contains 15 chapters in total. The author starts with some of the philosophy of consciousness and brings up ideas of Cartesian dualism and dismisses at an early stage the existence of consciousness in other animals despite high competence. He separates out the ability of this self reflection, a mind's ability to reflect on its state of mind, from cleverness and frames the search for consciousness as the mechanism which allows for this elevated self reflection unique to our knowledge in humans. The author then spends time on things like what evolution really means which he frames as an inversion of reasoning. The term is supposed to describe how there are no reasons there is just natural selection which through mutation leads to fitness improving variations which then propagate with higher probability leading to outcomes which are beneficial for the species. This mechanism means there is no why things exist, there is just a differential replication mechanism that leads to improved outcomes on a species wide basis. The author calls this inversion of reason which I don't think is as clever as the author believes it to be. The author also spends time on competence and discusses results from various species make instinctual decisions on their immediate surroundings as well as the tools at hand. There is decent up to date experimental results in this section so the book is very much up to date on recent animal studies. The author moves in to the core of the book which is really how comprehension has evolved and starts with some results information theory. The author gets into philosophical issues like the difference between semantic meaning and bits in information theory. There is nothing wrong with these sections but it strikes me that the author is far from an expert on the more mathematical parts of the book he tries to describe intuitively. The author then gets into how he sees the "space" that fitness functions can occupy. The Darwinian starting point is a bottom up evolutionary search process (competence with comprehension) and the opposite corner of the cube of possibilities (you'll see the diagram if you buy this) is top down elegantly constructed solutions like the works of Picasso and other intelligently designed systems. He sees humans as uniquely able to move in a bigger fitness space by using consciousness to make much more progress in adaptation than would be possible through pure bottoms up Darwinian evolution in competence space. This description is pretty intuitive and I felt it was a good way to describe how humanity has been able to speed up its understanding of its environment at a speed incomparable to an evolutionary process. Now the main arguments of the author are that this evolution of consciousness that has allowed the speeding up of our self improvement is due to memes (items associated with our culture) and most importantly the subset of language within the space of memes. The author describes the process in which meme's themselves follow a Darwinian process in which good cultural ideas propagate and poor ones die, so for example if kayak design is based off copying the kayaks which come back, a good kayak is due to its success in surviving a journey rather than its top down well designed construction which took into account multiple design nuances. The one real argument that I remember strongly is that the improvement and refinement of our language allows us to organize and gather more and more information that allows us to make progress within generations rather than over a long history of the species as we transmit our lessons and knowledge via our language and its codification. The author then goes on to discuss how our knowledge of the evolution of language is effectively non-existent and it is probably the case that our own consciousness evolved with the evolution of language rather than them being independent. The author likens the mind of ancient people to that of children just at the beginning of their path to learn language and communication skills. It is a non-trivial idea which is worthy of deep reflection. This theory is not the authors but he is a strong and clear advocate of it and the idea is somewhat new to me so I am glad to have read the authors ideas surrounding the subject. The author ends by describing how consciousness can be an illusion, he uses some optical illusion mechanisms which are weak along with some other examples which were unconvincing to me. The main point though again is worth thinking about which is that our consciousness is of our own construction using our accumulated memes and so reality is not our perception of events. We cant control our livers so who's to say that we can control our consciousness. Our brains are self-referential dynamical systems so there are ways where we influence ourselves but the idea of free will etc are challenging, complex and hard to define. From Bacteria to Bach and Back: The Evolution of Minds is an attempt to give a theory of how consciousness evolved and what its architecture has used. The authors conclusion is mainly that our memes create our consciousness and they allow a rich structure that has evolved consciousness. This benefit has allowed us to move from a bottoms up blind watch maker optimization to a self referencing agent who can move more quickly in fitness space. Its interesting in its conceptual foundations. Unfortunately the writing can be off point at times and the sequencing of ideas can be weak. There are multiple points where the author brings up some dispute he has from 20-30 years ago which add nothing and the author is just convincing himself. So there are parts which can be tedious and low value but the core idea I am glad to have read. Worth reading but I think the editing could be improved upon.

The title of this book immediately captivated my attention but when I read its contents it left me feeling a bit dizzy. I think this author's views are good but the way they are explained leave the reader dizzy with all the mess and all the unorganized ideas. I particularly enjoyed the Origins of Language chapter but otherwise it seems to me I wasted a precious twenty dollar bill when buying this one. :(

I bought this to supplement materials in my 2nd grade class for teaching solids and liquids. I saw it at a science conference and then went home and bought it online on amazon for much cheaper than it was sold at the conference. Great book, lots of info for my 2nd graders.

This is a great book for discussing density and solutions. The cover makes it seem like it's aimed for younger learners, but the concepts are applicable for grade 4 and up. Difficult concepts are explained in kid-friendly terms, and several investigations are suggested to help students grasp ideas.

Thanks.

I love reading it to my great grandchildren. The art work is wonderful!! Hope we see more like this. thanks

Very educational. We made the experiment with the kids ;)

I teach a kids' science class for ages 3 - 7. This is not something I would read aloud to 3 -5 year olds – too complex. But, it’s a FABULOUS book for 6 – 9 year olds, especially in a home school setting, where you and your child could actually walk through each of the experiments together. Fun illustrations of a boy, a girl, and a dog, plus the fact that the book is written in second person - addressed to the reader – inviting them to try everything out (“You could have fun guessing which things float…. fill your sink about halfway…”) make this an engaging non-fiction read. Guides kids through a series of observations and experiments with household objects to learn about density.

Have no idea why this book has such high reviews. It is lengthy, it is hard to understand, and the whole book talks about experiments so the whole time kids are distracted by wanting to do the experiments. I really didn't get any factual reasoning from this book either, it basically just restates the title on every page. "Well, some things float and somethings don't". Um, thanks. I could have come to that conclusion on my own. Not a book for my group of kids. Glad it worked for others.

As a science geek I love this book. It definitely is a book that upper elementary - freshman science teachers should incorporate into their unit on density. It does an amazing job of explaining many concepts (density, cubic foot, water displacement, and solutions). It actually walks readers though the scientific method in a fun and easy to understand way. I appreciate the data table and the accuracy of how data tables should be constructed (title, labels, straight lines, hypotheses). Finally the book sets readers up for many mini experiments to try on their own. This would be a great book to have for sharing because there are not many picture books that explain such a large science concept. I think it is important for upper elementary teachers and beyond to realize the role picture books can play in their teaching.

Amazon.com Review

Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home is the companion volume to Julia Child and Jacques Pepin's PBS series of the same name. The setup works like this: the two opinionated TV cooks confront different ingredients on each show, then make their way through to the finished dishes that make up a meal. The recipes reveal themselves along the way. What's most important here--and it shows up in the cookbook--is that there is no one way to cook. The point of the book isn't to follow recipes, but to cook from the suggestions. And Julia and Jacques have many, many suggestions when it comes to home cooking in the French style. And many tips, for that matter. Take chicken, for example. "Not everything I do with my roast chicken is necessarily scientific," Julia says. "For instance, I always give my bird a generous butter massage before I put it in the oven. Why? Because I think the chicken likes it--and, more important, I like to give it." Julia sets her chicken on a V-rack in a roasting pan in a 425-degree oven that she then turns down to 350 after 15 minutes. Jacques roasts his bird at 425, on its side, right in the pan. "To me," he says, "it's very important to place the chicken on its side for all but 10 minutes of roasting." After 25 minutes he turns his chicken over, careful not to tear the skin, and lowers the heat to 400. The bird finishes breast-side up for the last 15 to 20 minutes. This book is divided into chapters on appetizers, soups, eggs, salads and sandwiches, potatoes, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats, and desserts. The she said-he said format works throughout, and a lot of what's said you may realize you have heard before. There are no big surprises here. But it's good fun, a decent reminder of some of the classics of French tradition, and a chance to loosen up and simply cook at home with a couple of masters--one to the right of you, one to the left. You decide which hamburger's the right one for you. --Schuyler Ingle

From Publishers Weekly

Culinary grande dame Child and master chef P?pin define "the basics of fine food that looks good, tastes the way it should and is a total pleasure to eat." Chapters are organized into appetizers, soups, eggs, salads and sandwiches, potatoes, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats and desserts. Based on the vast experience of these chefs, the book takes a she says/he says approach to home-style French cooking: While Julia finds the dark digestive vein in shrimp "ugly" and automatically removes it, Jacques considers it "perfectly good protein to eat"; Julia prefers seasoning food with white pepper, but Jacques uses black pepper, and so forth. Child and P?pin recycle familiar Franco-American classics, like Omelets, Souffl?s, French Fries, Sole Meuni?re, Roast Chicken, Steak Au Poivre and Cr?me Br?l?e, with a contemporary sleight-of-hand (e.g., stocks that can be made within an hour; a microwave method for clarified butter). Eschewing today's trendy global pantry, recipes emphasize fresh, seasonal ingredients. There is also no shortage of shopping, preparation and technique tips from the pros, such as Jacques's perspective on buying a good steak: "it's more useful to have knowledge about cuts of meat than a lot of money." A charismatic tag team, veterans Child and P?pin illuminate novice and seasoned home cooks alike, gently reminding readers that "eating, as well as cooking, should be pleasurable and guiltless." First serial to Gourmet; Good Cook Book Club main selection; author tour. (Sept.) FYI: Cooking at Home is based on a forthcoming 22-part PBS series. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Just J & J , Julia and Jacques. A gem of American Television . Julia, a woman that found her call after trying everything . A lady with class and a master chef with excellent teaching skills and a lot of humor. My hero. Jacques , another master chef with a remarkable career and superb techniques , together to offer to the everyday day cook like me, a wide selection of classic dishes and meals to be produce at home. Joyfull experiences to share , because cooking is to show love in a meal.

Wonderful to watch these 2 working together. They enjoy each other's company and Jacques was so lovingly helpful with Julia in her declining years. I made their bacon, egg and dill pickle potato salad - yummmmm. I read a complaint that the receipts were too simple coming from such great chefs. I don't think haute cuisine was the point of this offering. It was to encourage people to try new things and enjoy the experience. I'm an above average home cook and I learned something new or innovative with each show. I'll watch it again and again.

There is a moment in this series that says it all for me: They are preparing a pork roast, I believe. Julia turns her back to fuss over one thing or another and Jacques, with a wink to the camera, scoops a few more garlic cloves out of a ramekin on the counter, dices them and slips them into the sauce he is making before she can turn back around. It's a classic example of the good-natured parrying that makes this cooking show my all-time favorite: Throughout the series the two of them gently fuss over which type of pepper to use, how long a roux must cook, and yes, how much garlic a recipe should have, as only old friends and accomplished cooks could. What a wondeful reminder that cooking is not an exact science. And watching the ease with which Jacques plays his little prank is a reminder of just how much skill he has. He never seems to hurry or work hard, and yet everything gets done in no time. This 4-DVD set is a delightful collection of moments like that, and a most practical guide to preparing an inspired collection of recipes ranging from creme brulee and roulade de chocolat to roast chicken and mashed potatoes. It will help any home cook master the basics, and reach for new heights of gastronomic glory.Yes, Julia is clearly in her twilight, and Jacques does most of the real work. But Julia is there every step of the way, which is a joy to see.As noted here in another review, the DVD provides the best format for emulating what you see on the show. Jacques is a true master and as a result, he makes everything look easy. The first time you try to follow along as he assembles a souflee, carves a chicken or rolls an omelet, you'll realize it's not as simple as he makes it all look. But fear not, you can pause, rewind, and even go frame-by-frame to study his techiques. It really helps. (Just remember to protect your remote in plastic wrap.)Yes, the DVD case is kinda cheap, though I have trouble getting the discs OUT, not keeping them in.And yes, there is an unskippable commercial at the beginning of each disc. I go and drink coffee for two minutes if I'm starting a fresh disc. Otherwise I use the position-memory feature on my DVD players to skip them. Neither strikes me as overly burdensome.Buy it. Savor it.

I love these two together. They work very well together. All the light hearted bantering back and forth makes it relatable to watch. Like two siblings catching up in the kitchen.

I had to order this twice. The first DVD set came and the second DVD stopped at eggs and wouldn't play. The second DVD set did the same thing but then I watched desserts at the end of the DVD and tried eggs again just hoping and it worked. Very strange. If you start eggs and just get commercials then try to watch dessert and go back to eggs on the menu and it may work.

This beautifully filmed 4 DVD Set of the Complete Series "Julia & Jacques Cooking at Home" is extremely informative and entertaining. It's a rare venue with 2 such accomplished Chefs and Teachers! The beloved duo are each their ever so pleasant selves as they freely share their many years of knowledge, experience and techniques - there's no one-up-manship here. Even with the occasional differing opinions about certain details and a site gag sprinkled in here and there as an episode's intro- it's all good - VERY GOOD!Their Step-by-Step teaching methods are beneficial for the novice cook as well as for the more accomplished. They are so friendly with each other and their audience, one gets the sense that you actually ARE in Julia's Home Kitchen with them- watching them work their magic and fun as only these two Masters of Cooking can do! This Series is Video proof-positive of how they each have won their places as the most accomplished culinary geniuses in the world and in the hearts of the millions who love them. The 4 Discs contain 85 Recipes in 22 Episodes- each one is beautifully captured on clear crisp Video. The Food Photography is so well done that one can almost taste each masterpiece as they are presented. Also, I have had NO problems with the DVD Case as some earlier revues have mentioned.BON APITITE & HAPPY COOKING!!! Julia & Jacques Cooking At Home YES Indeed!!!
