Lincoln and the Irish: The Untold Story of How the Irish Helped Abraham Lincoln Save the Union, by Niall O'Dowd

Review

“We’ve had Thomas Cahill’s excellent How The Irish Saved Civilization and now Niall O’Dowd has penned a terrific book that should be titled 'How The Irish Saved The Union.' O’Dowd introduces us to a wealth of Irish characters who had an enormous impact on Abraham Lincoln and the outcome of the Civil War. . . . Delve into this book on any page and you will find delicious little stories of the affection our most loved and cherished president had for our race, who were considered at the time as Catholic rabble by many on the east coast. If you’re a Lincoln fan like me, you’ll love this book.” —Liam Neeson, award-winning actor"In these times when some would make of America a cold house for emigrants, Niall O’Dowd has done well to remind us of how the greatest American icon, Abraham Lincoln, changed from a position of suspicion of Irish immigrants to one of gratitude and deep regard for them. As the book reveals, he was deeply touched by their outstanding role in his life and by their sacrifices in his battle to preserve the fragile flower of democracy."—Tim Pat Coogan, historian and best-selling author of The IRA, Michael Collins, and Wherever Green is WornLincoln and the Irish is an impressive work of scholarship that will be studied by Lincoln fans, Irish and American History buffs, and students of democracy. It also reads like a great historical novel that will engage any reader who picks it up. Niall O’Dowd has burrowed into the archives and presented us with a fast-paced narrative populated with wonderful historical characters such as the Confederate priest Fr. Patrick Bannon, the great Union Generals Meagher and Corcoran, and the Irish transgender Union Hero Albert Cashier/Jennie Hodgers. Underpinning these wonderful stories of Irish and Irish American heroes, heroines, and villains is the complex relationship between Lincoln and the millions of Irish who found refuge from famine and oppression in America, and who helped the Great Emancipator defeat slavery and cement America’s democracy. This is not only an important book but as engrossing a read as I’ve come across in a long time. “—Terry George, Oscar-winning writer and director of Hotel Rwanda, In the Name of the Father, and Some Mother’s Son

This is a brief book, less than 200 pages, with roughly 25-30 chapters consisting mainly of brief anecdotes or at most sketches, of Irishmen, and one or two Irishwomen, who came into contact with Lincoln or played meaningful roles in the Civil War era. Some the reader may already be familiar with, such as Thomas Francis Meagher, profiled admirably in "The Immortal Irishman"; Archbishop John Hughes who forcefully advocated for Irish immigrants' human rights in New York City; or Jennie Hodgers, who passed as a male soldier for the entire war and long afterwards. Others I was less familiar with, such as the Catholic priest Bannon, who traveled to Ireland in 1863 on behalf of the Confederacy to proselytize against Irishmen coming to America to join the Union army by playing up anti-Irish sentiments.Niall O'Dowd, the author, is a prolific writer on Irish and Irish-American themes. He is the founder of the website Irishcentral dot com. His broad and deep involvement in the topic benefits the reader, in that O'Dowd does an excellent job of inserting examples of anti-Irish sentiment throughout the United States in the antebellum and wartime eras, and the political exploitation of that by the proto-Republican party to which Lincoln belonged.Unfortunately, the book is sloppily written with many obvious copy-and-pastes that were not edited properly (such that, for example, an antecedent refers to the wrong person); duplicative or nearly duplicative sentences within lines of each other, hanging paragraphs, etc. I downgrade my rating one star for this sloppiness. Also, there is nothing in the way of reference notes to enable certain assertions to be followed up on.Bottom line, this is a light and easy read on the subject, written with affection if not a great deal of editorial rigor.

First, my family goes back to the early days of Ireland, especially along the southwest coast. My Ancient Gallic Family, O'Sullivan-Beare, traces its roots back thru the Eoghanacht Geneneologies. Thus I have no dislike for the Irish who suffered so much in coming to America in the 19th Century. Additionally, I have studied the American Civil War for some 35 years. While I do not to profess to be an expert an educated knowledge of the causes, the people, and the War itself is at hand.I agree with the review by Mr. Burt above."Lincoln and The Irish" is a book poorly written with incorrect historical comments (see Jackson for one), and repetitive text that brings up the same "points" without need. The book appears to have been "written" in great haste, thrown together from articles in magazines and thesis writings of unknown candidates, with little editing by qualified reviewers. I must say it was written and published for an audience which is well below that which James McPhearson, Gary Gallagher, Shelby Foote, Timothy Smith, Bruce Catton, or Allen Guelzo address.I suggest not wasting your money on this book, and wish I hadn't.

Interesting but with a glaring error. Mr. O'Dowd at several points refers to Stonewall Jackson's death as taking place at Fredericksburg when it actually occurred as a result of a gunshot wound fired by his own troops at Chancellorsville. Easy book to read and despite the error as noted entertaining.

Great Book; informative and well-written.

Too little history just a lot of loose connections.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the wording, along with the clarity and detail describing the different events reported. Thanks.

Excellent, informative book

This is a long overdue book which shows the amazing links between Lincoln and the Irish who were pouring into America during the Civil War. For the first time, the close relationship Lincoln had with the Irish, from Irish nannies to employees in the White House to great figures like Archbishop Hughes and Thomas Francis Meagher is shown. The forgotten role they played in the Civil War, especially the Pennsylvania 69th at Gettysburg isHidden history at it's best.A great read and not just for Irish Americans

There are many excellent works that explain how we make the decisions we make. Sapolsky tells us why we make them. This book is a must read for anyone interested in why we make decisions that often times seem inexplicable. More importantly, it provides a foundation for changing our social systems in ways that will be far more efficient and productive. I didn't get through the introduction before my first aha moment. He has taken complex science and presented it so it is understandable and enjoyable to read. The downside of reading Sapolsky's latest work is it will cause you to question long held beliefs about guilt or innocence, good and evil, moral or immoral. It is a ride worth taking and will leave you wanting more.

The newest on brain science by the world wide expert, Robert Sapolsky. After watching a class taught by him on Great Courses, my husband and I felt he was a leading expert in his field. He also can hold an audience, keeping you interested by inserting anecdotes into what can sometimes be an overwhelming amount of scientific information. In this book, you will learn how much your "subconscious" runs your life. You will see that sometimes why you did something is caused by a butterfly effect that started months ago. You will have a much greater understanding of people and why they do what they do. So worth reading. Amazing achievement, this book, this author, deserves your attention. He's on the cutting edge of our growing base of brain science.

This book describes the neurological processes of the brain. Most interesting was the numerous times that one's brain chemistry is doing something other than what you think you are thinking. For example you know that you are not prejudiced against the "other" but your brain knows better. For me a difficult read. Lots of unfamiliar terms and territory. The wonderful jokes and anecdotes greatly lightened the load. Their inclusion in uber-small type was a disappointment. The basic message is "it depends." Nature , nurture, early childhood experience (including abuse), and peer pressure all have an impact on behavior. There is no "silver bullet" that explains individual behavior. This is a scholarly work. The pop culture rewrite probably would run 200 pages without the plumbing and wiring diagrams. The frequent recaps and summaries help keep on on track.A final irony. We are told that the human brain doesn't reach maturity until the mid-twenties. Many of the cited studies were carried out with students as subjects. Are we studying immature brains?

Please read this book!We are capable of both far worse than we want to believe and can do more to change the world for the better than we tend to think we're able; and in both cases it's because of things we don't know, can't explain or don't want to control. But the more we try to expand the tiny sliver of knowledge we do have, with respect for how small that sliver is; and the more awareness we can have that the world around us and our biology drive much more of what we do in any moment than our conscious intellect, emotions or "free will" do - the more hope we have of doing more to change the world with the little bit of actual influence we possess. There is infinitely more that we'll never know than any of us ever can know. Life, and even more so we as humans, are complicated beyond comprehension. Many times over this book made that abundantly clear. More often than not, those lessons made me question the certainty of what I believe (or thought I knew as fact) about me, people, relationships, politics, economics, race, religion, God, culture, civilization, war, peace and any other slice of life I can think of.Robert Sapolsky, with humility and great respect for the limitations of science, has written a truly world view changing book that is as well written as the science he has aggregated is fascinating and eye-opening. He artfully conveys meaningful, relevant understanding and context for the hopelessly complex topic of what drives human behavior. A review that led me to this book described it as one of the best works of non-fiction the reviewer had read, and it is hands down the same for me. It is also likely to prove one of the most meaningful and important books I ever will read because of how fundamentally it has me re-thinking, well, everything.

This is an impressive book. It’s a kind of encyclopedia of human nature, with the earlier chapters focused on the functions of different parts of the human brain and the later chapters focused on this brain’s behavioral consequences.Robert Sapolsky is nothing if not engaging in his writing style. He knows how to present complicated subject matter in easily digestible and logically coherent portions. And he has a sense of humor which, often enough, hits home. Here’s his take on who reads academic research papers: “The number of times your average science paper is cited can be counted on one hand, with most of the citations by the scientist’s mother.”As an academic, all I can say is “ouch,” but it’s an ouch of recognition, not objection. This quote, by the way, is part of a thorough discussion of the work of three of the most cited social scientists in history - Solomon Asch, Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo - a discussion which, by itself, is almost worth the purchase price of "Behave."So, if you’re interested in the latest research on what people-and-the-things-they-do are all about, and would also appreciate having a valuable source for future reference on a wide array of topics in this area, Professor Sapolsky’s latest book is just the thing. Strongly recommend.

From the Back Cover

"The Honeynet guys have always been fighting the good fight: messing with the hackers' heads, learning what they're doing, collecting their tools and tricks, and sharing the knowledge with the rest of the good guys. It's one thing to sit around and try to guess what the hackers are up to, but the Honeynet Project just rolled up their sleeves and went on the offensive in their own unique way. Never before has being a victim been so cool! This book is a great resource for the serious information security professional and the beginning practitioner alike." --Marcus J. Ranum, Senior Scientist, TrueSecure Corp. "The Honeynet Project is one of the best sources, if not the best source, for information about current techniques and trends in the blackhat community. They are also how-to experts in setting up and gathering information--safely--about these attackers. The Honeynet Project's ability and willingness to share cutting-edge information is an immeasurable benefit to the security community." --Jennifer Kolde, security consultant, author, and instructor "Know Your Enemy contains an incredible wealth of information, including legal and sociological topics, that set it apart from other security books. The scope of this book is broad, and while no one book can teach people everything they need to know on such a topic, this one covers the subject better than any other source I know. Know Your Enemy will help security professionals with specific technical information, and it will help more general readers better understand a topic they need to learn about." --William Robinson, former security training program manager at Sun Microsystems, curriculum coordinator for Fire Protection Publications. "This book will be an extremely useful tool in helping a network security administrator or professional assemble the technical tools needed to build, maintain, analyze, and learn from a honeynet within their organization. Each technical chapter goes into great detail on commands, log formats, configuration files, network design, etc. As a professional working with many of these technologies on a daily basis, it is exciting to see all of this information in one place. The knowledge and experience of the authors in working with and developing honeynets has grown noticeably since the first book was published. This is a very positive revision." --Sean Brown, IT Director, Applied Geographics, Inc. "With the drastic increase in the number of attacks, it is important to have more people within the security industry studying attacks and attackers' motives and sharing their results with the community. This book begins by teaching users whether they should install a honeypot, and then gives details and information about honeypots and how they can deploy them." --Kirby Kuehl, Cisco Systems "Know Your Enemy reveals truths about the blackhat community and shows readers how to fight off attacks. The authors contribute their own experiences and offer the curious reader a rainbow of ideas." --Laurent Oudot, security engineer, CEA "The Honeynet Project has been blazing a trail and providing a hard dose of reality that computer security needs. Get behind the fantasy and learn what the hackers are really doing. This is great cutting-edge stuff!" --Marcus J. Ranum, senior scientist, TruSecure Corp. For centuries, military organizations have relied on scouts to gather intelligence about the enemy. In the field of information security, few scouts have ever existed. Very few organizations today know who their enemies are, how they might attack, when they might attack, and, perhaps most important, why they attack. If the blackhat community is the enemy, then the Honeynet Project is a most valuable ally. In this completely revised and greatly expanded follow-up to their groundbreaking book, Know Your Enemy, members of the Honeynet Project, the Alliance, and the community (including Lance Spitzner, Brian Carrier, Anton Chuvakin, Eric Cole, Yannis Corovesis, Max Kilger, and Rob Lee) provide an unrivaled "intelligence report" on those who use the Internet for destructive purposes. They also provide an in-depth guide to honeynets--high-interaction honeypots designed to capture extensive information on exactly how your enemies operate so you can protect your systems from them. Inside, you'll find extensive information on: How to plan, build, and maintain first- and second-generation, virtual, and distributed honeynets. How to capture and analyze data through a honeynet, including the latest on reverse engineering and forensics for Windows, UNIX, and networks. Understanding the enemy, including real examples of incidents and compromised systems, types of attacks, and profiling. Aimed at security professionals, but containing much information that is relevant for those with less technical backgrounds, this book teaches the technical skills needed to study and learn from a blackhat attack.

The Honeynet Project is a nonprofit security research organization made up of about 30 volunteers, that was set up to learn the tools and techniques that blackhats use, and then share the information that was learned. This book is divided into three parts with the first part covering what honeynets are, some history and various iterations of honeynets. Part II is dedicated to analysis and forensics, and I found the Network Forensics chapter gave very thorough coverage to the subject. Chapter 14 Reverse Engineering was also very good. Part III begins with a profile of "The Enemy" in Chapter 16 Profiling, which was outstanding and provides some very good insights into the mind of malicious actors. I would have liked a chapter on Apple's OS X or iOS in this section, as only Windows, Solaris and Linux Compromise and Analysis are covered. Overall it was well worth the purchase price, and I would highly recommend picking it up.

What's great: This book has a lot of scripting examples that can be used directly. Scripting and Windows personalities are thoroughly covered. Examples of how to apply this for network security and incidence response were greatly appreciated.Could be improved: as an extreme novice, I would like more detailed step by step set up instructions

Great reference book to any computer library.

The Honeynet Project grew out of an informal group of computer experts who decided to take an active role in tracking breakins to computers. Existing countermeasures, like firewalls, and frequent patches of discovered firmware bugs, were fundamentally defensive. And did not actively try to understand the capabilities and intentions of the crackers/intruders/blackhats.This second edition describes what they term Gen 2 Honeynets. These are more sophisticated than Gen 1 networks of honeypots, where a honeypot is a computer expressly deployed for blackhats to intrude upon. The book delves in some length on how to construct a honeypot and a honeynet. Various configurations are possible. A honeypot could mimic a Microsoft computer or a Solaris or linux machine. There is more emphasis on the actual machine being linux, because of the open source nature, which has led to tools like Snort, Ethereal and Sebeb being available. Indeed, Snort-Inline and Sebek were developed by this project.Lots of craft keyboard sniffing (Sebek) and network sniffing (Ethereal). Plus, variant arrangements like having one computer pretend to be several honeypots are described. Or another, where a honeynet might be physically distant from the production net, but linked to it via a VPN.All this is scarcely the last word. The blackhats will certainly devour this book to concoct their next generation techniques. You can safely predict an eventual third edition of this book.

Most of the time, your only close-up view of a computer attack is trying to sort out how someone compromised your production system. But there is a way to get hands-on experience with attack analysis, and Know Your Enemy - Learning About Security Threats by The Honeynet Project (Addison-Wesley) shows you how.The chapter breakout: The Beginning; Honeypots; Honeynets; Gen1 Honeynets; Gen2 Honeynets; Virtual Honeynets; Distributed Honeynets; Legal Issues; The Digital Crime Scene; Network Forensics; Computer Forensics Basics; UNIX Computer Forensics; Windows Computer Forensics; Reverse Engineering; Centralized Data Collection and Analysis; Profiling; Attacks and Exploits: Lessons Learned; Windows 2000 Compromise and Analysis; Linux Compromise; Example of Solaris Compromise; The Future; IPTables Firewall Script; Snort Configuration; Swatch Configuration; Network Configuration Summary; Honeywall Kernel Configuration; Gen2 rc.firewall Configuration; Resources and References; About The Authors; IndexIf you're not familiar with the concept, a honeypot is a computer set up to gain the attention of network intruders. The concept is that the intruder will spend time with that box and leave the rest of the network alone. A honeynet is the same thing but only at a network level. The authors of this book are experts at setting up these kind of systems in order to see how attackers work and discover new exploits before they are used against actual production systems. They take you through all the different parts of the process; how to set up a honeypot/honeynet, how to analyze an attack, what legal considerations have to be kept in mind, and examples of exploits that actually were recorded and analyzed. While there are plenty of books that talk about computer security, there are few that show you how to take the offensive and learn first-hand how to analyze and understand real-life attacks. This is a unique offering that will have high appeal for the security professional looking for in-depth understanding of the attacker mindset.
