this is a rip off - I did not look at description - it is a 31 page large print i would call phrase book. Sister in law asked for a Warren Buffet book and I mistakenly just bought this without any research

This book is kind of hard to follow and you have to pay quite a bit of attention. I'm learning more everyday from it. If you want to learn about what to invest in, your are getting the wrong book-- but if you want to further your investments it may be right for you.

This book has great knowledge on value investing, the writer highlights great points that does not only apply to buying stocks but can be applied if you are a business owner or if you are an investor who wants to put some of his money to work for him, it does get abit repetitive but I guess this is used to reiterate The importance of hard extensive research and commitment to the stocks you are looking forward to buy or even the business you are willing to invest in. This book will make the wise man wiser, all in all good read.

This may be worth $0.00 if you read it for free on Kindle Unlimited, but to charge $9.99 for a large type, 30 page book is outrageous! Shame on me for not checking the page count before purchasing, but one would assume there would be more than 30 pages in Warren Buffet's "Life's Lessons ..." DO NOT BUY the paperback version of this book.

Very quick, high-level summary of Warren Buffett's writings. It was an easy read. If you're a beginner and just getting into the world of investing, it's great. But if you're intermediate to advanced, then this won't add much value other than maybe having a quick refresher.

I never knew so much much about investing, even though I wanted to, especially now that I have a lot of savings and I'm left wondering what should I be doing with all that money. This book gave me insight into everything I need to know about investing money, especially in real estate, which I've been thinking about quite a lot lately. Getting to understand how real estate market works definitely gave me the confidence to try myself in that line of work in near future. Recommended to anyone wishing to grow their wealth via investing. Good luck potential future millionaires.

I wish the book had more information. There was some good things said but the author never went in depth.

Worst and shortest book ever.

Review

"Brilliant and exhilarating . . . Deutsch is so smart, and so strange, and so creative, and so inexhaustibly curious, and so vividly intellectually alive, that it is a distinct privilege to spend time in his head." --The New York Times Book Review  "[Deutsch] makes the case for infinite progress and such passion, imagination, and quirky brilliance that I couldn't help enjoying his argument. . . . [He] mounts a compelling challenge to scientific reductionism." --The Wall Street Journal “A deep theory of why humanity is destined to make progress may be found in David Deutsch’s dazzling The Beginning of Infinity.  Deutsch presents science as a force for betterment, since it impels us to explain the world while forcing us to acknowledge our fallibility.” – Steven Pinker, The Guardian"Provocative and persuasive . . . Address[es] subjects from artificial intelligence to the evolution of culture and creativity." --The Economist  “[Deutsch’s books] are among the most ambitious works of nonfiction I have read, in that their aim is no less than an explanation of all reality. . . . They are treatises that weave together not just physics and astronomy but biology, mathematics, computer science, political science, psychology, philosophy, aesthetics, and—most important for Deutsch—epistemology, among other fields, in fashioning a profound new view of the world and the universe.” --The New Yorker’s Book Bench“Deutsch has an important message . . . that our destiny is to be explainers of the world around us, and explaining is the key to our mastery. . . . He writes clearly and thinks wisely. His book could help the world toward better ways of dealing with its problems.” --Freeman Dyson, The New York Review of Books

Feeling starved of intellectual engagement? Is PBS failing to meet your craving for mental stimulation? Is your spouse tired of listening to your pontifications on the origins of the universe? Well, good news then: David Deutsch is here to provide relief. “The Beginning of Infinity” is a wide-ranging book of ideas. Hard to pin down precisely, It offers a sampling of what I’d call “1 o’clock discussions.” You know the ones; they happen after the party guests have departed and only you and your best friend remain behind, staring at the ceiling, chatting as you finish the last drinks of the night.Deutsch, equal parts physicist (his actual day job) and philosopher, creates a carefully constructed argument designed to prove that there are no theoretical limits on human knowledge. Can we stop the aging process? Given enough knowledge, sure. After all, the complexity of the problem is finite, and the biological processes underlying the aging process are relatively well understood. Given enough time and resources for the necessary research, there’s no reason that humans can’t prevent aging from occurring. (The practical implications of such an outcome would be fascinating, but that’s not the focus of the book.) Basically, Deutsch argues that any physical process that is not precluded by laws of nature (like traveling faster than the speed of light, for example) is achievable given sufficient knowledge and that if we don’t have that knowledge right now, we can obtain it.The foundation of his proof rests on two basic truisms: that in any endeavor problems are inevitable, and that all problems are soluble given sufficient knowledge. One of the many meanings of “infinity” (which he carefully lays out at the end of each chapter’s summary) is that there are no limits on what can be known. He says that suggesting that there are “bounds on the domains in which reason is the proper arbiter of ideas is a belief in unreason or the supernatural.” He buttresses his argument by offering a brief tour of history and The Enlightenment. Western civilization of the Pre-enlightenment remained stagnant during the Dark Ages specifically because organized authority squelched free inquiry and the creation of original conjectures which could be tested to conclusively rule out false ideas. Deutsch says that it is only through the creation of original conjectures that knowledge can be expanded. All assertions must be tested, and proof sought. Whatever is true withstands any degree of testing that one can muster, while that which is false crumbles. With the Enlightenment, explanatory knowledge became the most important determinant of physical events, not superstition or human authority. Once that occurred, the curve of charted knowledge growth became steep indeed with no end in sight.Accepting that humans have the theoretical power to become infinitely knowledgable, doesn’t mean that getting there is easy. Here, Deutsch delves into his theories of “optimism.” Continuing to pursue knowledge through the solution of problems is fundamentally an exercise in optimism. We believe that a solutions exist, even if we haven’t yet found them. If we try to improve things and fail it's because we did not know enough in time. Civilizations that have collapsed did so because they had insufficient knowledge of how to save themselves or they ran out of time before a solution could be found. The inhabitants of Easter Island are highlighted as an example as well as (somewhat controversially) our own current predicament as a civilization faced with the challenge of dramatic climate change. Deutsch suggests that climate change is simply another example of a problem that needs sufficient knowledge with which to devise a solution.Arguments like this can cause Deutsch to come across as cold and rational to a fault. While it’s hard to argue with the logic of his carefully constructed propositions, it can leave one searching for a little humanity behind the words. In this regard, “The Beginning of Infinity” can sometimes feel less like a late night conversation with a buddy and more like a lecture from Mr. Spock. But, just as that begins to happen, he manages to branch off into another fascinating exploration of Ideas writ large, covering topics such as quantum mechanics, the Multiverse, the mathematical impossibility of truly representational government, memes, beauty, creativity, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and the concept of mathematical infinity. Each one of these explorations is tied to the basic premise of the infinite expansion of knowledge, though some less successfully than others. For example, his exploration of beauty is completely devoid of the ineffable emotions that most of us associate with that quality. This is perhaps one of the only realms where logic has less to offer than unjustifiable irrationality. While not all of these topics hold together as a completely coherent whole, each is utterly fascinating in its own way (particularly his exploration of the multiverse, a concept so foreign to human experience, that the chapter calls for repeated readings to promote comprehension). Everything is so carefully laid out that you’re likely to be persuaded of Deutsch’s position that given enough time, there’s nothing that we can’t learn and that there are no problems which are insoluble. Overall, this book is a great source of brain food for anyone looking to sharpen their mental acuity, step out of the ordinary, and go for a walk with a brilliant mind.

This is definitely an interesting book and I learned a lot from it. But I suggest to look critically at it and not take it for granted as the truth. Ok, I m no philosopher, but I see that the author makes assumptions about humans and human society which just don't hold up. For example:"All evils are due to the lack of knowledge." Really? No, not all, far from it.Or the in the other chapter when it is stated that we always learn and absorb new ideas from conjecture and criticism. Again, seems like a big oversimplification. Yes, some ideas, in part, but our emotions, biases, psychological state play huge role i what we come to believe. And if the idea fits into what we value we would not criticize or test it before absorbing it. Maybe some people would, but most wouldn't.I understand that the author is a scientist and big proponent of Popper epistemology and that's how he looks at it. And that's how science and rational inquiry should work, even though I m sure even in science biases a psychology still play a big role. But I think the author is way too optimistic about the human nature. So, because I don't agree with the (some of) assumptions, the conclusions don't follow for me either. But I believe you can learn from a book even if you don't agree with the author and this book has a lot of value and touches a lot of different topics. So I recommend it, just be cautious and subject what the author says to criticism (as he recommends).

If this book were as difficult to understand as some of the comments on it are, it would not be one I'd want to read! I'm no scientist but I wanted to give it a try because I'd heard David Deutsch speaking and found him very easy to follow and absolutely fascinating, and I wanted more.Having read the book three times (and the bit about the Infinity Hotel four times to figure out what happened to the puppy!) and finding that I am getting more out of it with each reading, I can understand that it may be controversial in some respects, but I don't understand why it is attracting such intense and bizarre hostility. What am I missing? For me, the writing is crystal clear, charming and riveting, like the author himself when you hear him speak -- it's a sheer delight to read. It made me laugh out loud several times -- I LOVE that the author's sense of humor comes through even in what is a very deep, important book. And it even moved me to tears. The subject matter is super wide-ranging, including stuff about physics and mathematics (no formulas, thankfully), beauty (yes, really!), voting systems (why proportional voting systems are fundamentally unfair despite the best intentions of those proposing them), environmentalism (why we have it all wrong!), intriguing stuff about culture, history, philosophy, etc., etc. David Deutsch is truly a polymath. But what I personally find so enthralling is the way reading this book is challenging me and changing the way I think. I love the way all the apparently disparate issues are united in a single, coherent worldview having implications far beyond just what David Deutsch discusses in this book. As best I can tell, the author's worldview is vibrantly positive, optimistic (not to be confused with unrealistic), and rational (in the sense of being in favor of progress, solving problems and ending misery and suffering) -- a fundamentally humane worldview -- a beautiful, life-affirming, shining-beacon-of-light sort of worldview. For me, it has the ring of truth. Evidently for others, it is the work of the devil. But for anyone who loves ideas and thinking about things, The Beginning of Infinity is worth reading whether or not you agree with the author's ideas.

This is one of my favorite books. It is about a witch who turns a mother's children into food while they are out. The mother must know what child is what food in order to turn them back. It's not scary....more magical. Audrey Wood is such a wonderful writer. Don Wood writes similar books. They are so vidid that they almost look real. I loved this book and it will be a treasure to save forever. My children now in their 30's are reading it to their young children. It does not have to be a Halloween book. I would suggest 3 years and up.

Okay- so I was nervous about buying this book for my 3 year old because of the reviews that said the book is scary. It is not. Lol not in my opinion and not in my toddlers opinion either. This book is a fairy tale, super fun, sort of dark, easy and fun to read (and my son loves my heckedy peg voice) and it has amazing illustrations. Very beautiful. My son frequently walks around the house now saying "come on sweet chickens!" Haha which is a phrase heckedy peg says. After Christmas we read this every night for at least a month. Great book! Such a relief from the old happy go lucky standard toddler rhyming books. Blah I get tired of those- but this I could read over and over. I was so happy my son loves it, and I really don't think it's as "dark" as everyone makes it out to be- great buy!

AMAZING book! I only remember a handful of books from my childhood and this is one of them. The children are named after the days of the week (kids get practice hearing them, older children can predict what the rest of the children are named). Spoiler alert- the witch turns them into different foods and the mom has to correctlyguess which one is each child. Easy to make interactive with a child and have them help guess which food is which child. The illustrations are so beautiful and moving! Each one is a work of art. You can read it multiple times and still discover new details in the artwork.A few people said their book arrived damaged. Mine arrived in perfect condition. No issues for me!Love it!

This was one of my favorite books when I was a very young girl, to this day it is still one of my favorites. I bought this so I could pass it on to my kids. I adore the determination of a mothers love to get her kids back from the wicked witch. The paintings in this book was one of the main reasons why I have an extreme love for oil based paintings. I also bought the book "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" the same time and it is just as amazing as Heckedy Peg. I just wish I could of bought Heckedy Peg in Hardcopy as I did with "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub." I bought the book in paperback and sadly it looked used and not brand new. I had to take a star off because of that but other than that the book itself is just wonderful.

I loved this book as a child and once i had my own - it was a must purchase. I realized that once I ordered, I still had my copy but I'm grateful to have two copies. The story is about love of a mother and knowing her children. It's fun and not scary and I just love it. It's a classic in my home.

Loved this book as a child, bought it here to share with my 6 year old son and his entire kindergarten class. He (and they) were just as enchanted as I remember being, and afterward, all enjoyed imitating Heckedy Peg's voice and hobbling around on their "peg" legs.

The story is great, but my copy is falling apart at the seams, has rips, places are taped, and there is writing throughout. How they thought this was in sellable condition, I will never know. Love the story, but my copy is a joke.

This book was purchased for a grandchild and was a book I had purchased and read to my children when they were young. I bought the book origionally for the beautiful illustrations; but it is also a very good fairy tale. The mother in the story knows and loves her children and is able at the end of the story to turn everything about because she knows them so well. My youngest daughter, who has two children of her own said that this was a book that I should make sure each of my married adult children had for their children. So I will need to purchase two more before the year is out. This was a much loved book when ours were young and for the grandchildren that have it it is proving to be special for them too.
