Wonderful to see some of Michael's work again. I have missed seeing books published with his work on the cover. A joyful read as well as looking at all the pictures within.
excellen t reproductions if a little small.
I am an avid collector of SF&F art books for about 30 years now and have all the previous Michael Whelan volumes. I was also one of the Kickstarter founders for this project, and with all the hype and promises and in-between reports I have expected so much more for THE art book about Michael's body of work… :(Upon opening the parcel, I was immediately utterly disappointed. As said, I own all the other books by Michael, and even the first one, Wonderworks (from 1978!) is considerably bigger than this tiny volume! The second art book from 1987, Works of Wonder is almost twice as big, and many images in BEYOND are there as well, only – and this again is in itself disappointing – bigger and/or with better printing quality. We are talking about a 30 years old book here, folks, standing for nearly as much on my shelf… Really really sad.And then there was the previous magnum opus, The Art of Michael Whelan from Bantam Books (1993), with playful, conceptual changes in paper and design in different chapters, again wonderful printing quality in huge, square layout. In all of these 3 previous volumes, focus was clearly on Michael's magnificent art, with usually full-page, plain illustrations (sometimes with a nice white border), only a few images were spread over the middle of the book (which is always a sad sight in art books, virtually cutting the landscape image in 2 parts). Also, these volumes built upon each other, the amount of images used from previous books was under 20-25%, which is totally okay for retrospectives. Michael produces a lot of art, so it was normal to look at the new stuff.Entering BEYOND… :(The book is at least 50-60% full with old material. Which is okay – I don't know, how much art Michael did produce in the past 25 years since the Bantam book, but to include so few of them is really a bummer. The only acceptable reason for including so much of the old art would be, if this book is considered by Michael and his editors as THE MAGNUM OPUS of his body of art, some sort of a crown on his fantastic career in art. This margin has in an incredible, underwhelming way NOT been met!The book is tiny, which leads to the folding/spreading the landscape images over the middle of the book. The portrait images on the other hand suffer from descriptions captured INTO them! Also, despite all the information during the Kickstarter campaign about Michael looking through proofs, not being happy with first, second etc. samples, the printing quality and colors are in many images not necessarily better than in the previous 3 art books. Of course, I cannot compare to the original images in life, but I am a bit skeptical if it was really that much worth of time and care, if on the other hand the whole book itself has so many shortcomings (size, spreading pages, text on images, not that much new material, quite uninspired preface by Robert Williams, seemingly no order in positioning the pictures – not by year, not by subject, not by color, not by book author etc.)I am getting a very unwell feeling, that this is only a pro forma collection of Michael's art, and the size and other limits mentioned above have to do with his business of selling high-profile, quite expensive art prints. If your images would be available in wonderful printing quality, huge size and without any text on the picture in an art book, some people might end up buying the art book instead, maybe even scanning and printing images themselves from it. So maybe – *conspiracy theory on* - it was a dedicated choice to cripple this art book in order to sell more prints? Maybe. Maybe not.But as an art book, in my view BEYOND is sadly a failure and utter disappointment. To see how it's done, even if your main business is in gallery quality art prints, check out for instance the fantastic last 2 volumes by Daniel Merriam, Taking Reality By Surprise, and Built On Dreams Alone – now THOSE are art books deserving that name!
I got my copy at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018.It's hard to believe, but it's been 25 years since Whelan has had an art book published. The last one, for which he was very much "hands on" in terms of design, is a classic art book in every sense of the word. This paperback book, with a smaller trim size (roughly 6.5 x 10.25 inches), was the "show catalog" for an exhibit of his artwork in Irvine, Calif. (A smaller run in hardback was published, available exclusively as a signed, limited edition of 1500 copies--the signature on a bookplate.)The art is a mixture of his classic science fiction & fantasy art, with a good representation of his more personal art projects & gallery art, in color. Both the paperback and hardback have sewn signatures, so the book won't fall apart. (Books with the oxymoronic "perfect binding" will see their spines crack over time.)The art is well reproduced with color that accurately matches the original art, according to what I've seen of his originals at recent shows. The paper stock is glossy and picks up the colors well. I think the reproduction is this book's strongest suit, along with the selection of the art.New and old Whelan fans will find this an indispensable addition to their book collection. It's affordably priced, well printed, and in terms of page count has a nice, hefty feel, though the pages are not numbered. I would have liked some commentary by the artist, especially for the personal pieces that would benefit from a little context, but the fantasy & sf pieces of art need no explanation if you have the original novels on which they are based. (If I had a choice, I'd prefer to see the book illustrations have titles linked to the original publication source; i.e., "The White Dragon" from 1978 is from Anne McCaffrey, and it's the first cover he had done for her books. (It was also printed in The Donning Company's 1979 book WONDERWORKS, which unfortunately suffered from a bad printing job that muddied all the colors throughout; its appearance in BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION pops in comparison, in every way.)Bottom line: If you love fantasy or science fiction art, if you're a Whelan fan, or if you want to give someone a gift of the best in imaginative art at a very low cost ($25 retail), this is the book you'll want to buy, or give as a gift: a beautiful book, printed with fidelity to the original art, with a wide selection of art to suit any taste, this book is worth your time, attention, and money.
I bought the limited signed edition and was immediately impressed by the quality and imagery. Suffice it to say that if this version is anything like the LE, BUY IT!
