So far its a good read. Hoping to begin the plan soon. Bought this as recommendation of a friend and his results were great on both weight loss and digestive issues.
I almost feel like my review is not necessary because there are so many but thought I’d write one anyway in case it helps someone. I didn’t have a lot of weight to loose. I’m a 45 year old mom of 16 year old twins and I weighted 129 pounds and I am 5’4â€. I realize this is within normal range but I feel best when I weight under 125. When you are at this range 5 pounds feels like a lot. My clothes were always tight and I generally just felt bloated sluggish and not at my optimum weight. I can feel the collective eye roll from some of you but this review is for people like me. I had been counting calories and ordering salmon at restaurants for almost a decade trying to lose 5 pounds and I would after a few months only to have it come back the second I ate even the least bit “badâ€. Worst of all I had UNCONTROLLABLE sugar cravings. The cravings were uncontrollable and they controlled me. I heard about this book from a coworker and got it and read it. I have some words of advice on the read - I read it all the way through and mostly skipped all of the testimonials. They get to be a little much. I get there are a lot of success stories but there are way too many in the book. So I read it through and skipped those but pay attention because some of the inset boxes are not testimonials and have information that you need. So after the first read I read it again with a highlighter and highlighted information I wanted to remember. Then over the course of the next few weeks I’d review my highlights. Before I started I formulated a plan and gathered supplies but I also started with the water consumption to train myself to drink the water in the quantity and timing she recommends (half your body weight in ounces per day and with 45 minutes before and after meals and to have it all drank before dinner and to not drink any after dinner). I also modified the plan some. The book cautions against this but I still had success. But everyone is different. For me the modifications still worked. For others maybe not. For example I’m never going to eat sautéed kale and during the cleanse I still had my one cup of coffee each morning. And for me turns out I am not reactive to many things so the plan was easy. But I can see if you are reactive to a lot it might be hard. But regardless better to know than not. So I lost 8.5 pounds in about 2 weeks and have stayed there. I’m on day 52 now. I had an out of town trip and ate out a lot including in and out burger (which I later regretted because it really wasn’t that tasty). When I came home I had gained 2 pounds but jumped right back into the plan and by the end of that week was back at my weight. All of this is great but here’s the most important thing for me - this plan crushed my constant sugar cravings. They are gone and it’s changed my life and I’m so thankful. My husband buys girl scout cookies by the dozens from any Girl Scout that asks him. Which is sweet but we have literally dozen of boxes of delicious thin mints in our pantry and freezer. Before the plan I could easily eat an entire sleeve of them per sitting. They would beckon me and I couldn’t resist their call. But I have been able to not eat a single one and more importantly not even think about them. This may sound dramatic but I feel like it’s a miracle. I feel better and my attitude towards food has completely changed. I feel empowered with food knowledge. A lot of reviews note the editing and the recipes being incomplete which is true but just use your common cooking sense and read the recipe completely through before starting. For example there are a couple that list ingredients but then in the instructions never have you add them. I just add them where they make sense or omit them if I think they are not necessary. There are also some reviews that say it’s expensive. This is relative. If you have no spices and have to buy them all maybe. I already had most of them. It’s pretty much all fresh food so you’ll have to shop more often. I’d say it’s added maybe $100-150 a month to my grocery bill. For me that’s not a bad trade off for the result but some might think it’s too much.Good luck all!!
This review is written for all the 40+ women out there who have struggled and struggled to lose weight on any diet. I am one of those women. I am 48, work out 10 hours a week, eat 1200 calories a day, and am 20-30 pounds overweight and no matter what I did, could not budge the scale. I used to work out 5 hours a week and decided to double it thinking that the extra workouts would "beat" the weight off of me. So, I upped my workouts and......NOTHING! I had three kids in 5 years - the last when I was 42. I was able to get the weight off with the first two, but what worked with the first didn't work with the second and nothing worked with the third. I had had previous success on weightwatchers, so I tried that again, but given that I'm a vegan and the points system now doesn't count any of the fruits and vegetables you eat, well, that's a problem since that's where all my calories are coming from. I tried a high protein/low carb diet, which had limited success, but vegan sources of protein tend to be carby and although I'd only be eating about 1,200 calories a day, I'd struggle to even take off 1/4 of a pound a week! My 6'6", 185-pound husband, who eats whatever he wants, whenever he wants says, "it's calories in/calories out". Clearly, if that's the case, then this is new math that I don't understand. I would get down in the dumps because I felt like I'd never get rid of the extra weight, but was at a complete loss for knowing what to do to get it off. I was ready to give up, but I couldn't give up. Carrying extra weight around for many years is unhealthy.A friend of mine, who is also in my age group, recommended this book. I'd never heard of it before, but went out to Amazon to read the premise and the reviews. The reviews seemed like they were all written by people like me. I read on and saw that she provided options for tailoring The Plan to vegans and vegetarians, so I decided "what the hell" and bought the book. I spent the first week reading the book and looking through the recipes. There's a fair amount of prep work that needs to be done to get your food ready for the first week. That said, the recipes are all super simple to make. They're not gourmet, but they're palatable. I read the book's Plan for the first week and then pulled down the vegetarian and vegan menus off her website and kind of put together a hybrid plan for the week.I've been on The Plan for a week now and have lost.........wait for it..........9 pounds!!! How is that even possible? I don't know and I'm not asking - who cares? And even though I'm only one week into this and still have a fair number of days left to go, I don't even really care what happens from here on out because I'm down 9 pounds! The Plan makes perfect sense to me and is the first time I've ever come across a diet plan that is tailored to your body. I did another "medically supervised" diet plan where you were eating 1,200 calories a day and were supposed to take off 2-3 pounds a week. When I struggled to take off 1/2 a pound a week, I asked them why and they couldn't answer me. If it's a simple calories in/calories out equation, then anyone who was dedicated could lose weight. For some of us, our bodies attack the food we put in it and that has to be remedied. Her premise is such an interesting concept and explains so much about those folks who we all know who seem to eat whatever they want and stay as skinny as a rail. Most of us chalk it up to a faster metabolism, but how could someone's metabolism be really that much faster than another person's? The way I interpret The Plan is that it's a personalized eating plan that tailors foods to your body chemistry so that we all can eat "whatever we want" and stay slim and fit. We all have the same metabolism, but those people who stay slim eating everything have a much more efficient metabolism because there aren't any foods that hang up in their system. For the rest of us, it's a scientific puzzle to figure out what works for us and what doesn't. I also think she's really on to something with the whole aging process and our systems becoming sensitized to certain foods that once gave us no trouble when we were younger.I am a huge believer in this book and plan. I have turned three other people on to it and they're now doing it as well. Given that it's the only thing that has worked for me, if you're in the same boat and find you can't budge the scale no matter what you do, it's at least worth a try. I feel great, my arthritis has lessened, and I'm eating avocados for the first time in a couple of decades! Give it a try.

An impressive and academic read. McKenna examines livestock -- cows, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks and geese, chickens, even fish -- from their earliest agricultural history through current factory farming practices. Her source material is endless and she manages to examine all sides of various arguments on the place of livestock in our lives and diets. I particularly liked her visits to various farms, allowing farmers their voices in explaining their theories and practices. If you are interested in the food question, if you like a well researched academic read without too much academic jargon, this is an excellent choice. McKenna is Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma on steroids.
This is a scholarly look at American livestock farming, digressing often into philosophy which asks whether we should think of animals as meat on the hoof, or as sexualised producers of milk, say. And whether our lives are diminished by treating animals the way slaves used to be treated.Fish farming is the unusual start to the exploration. Many issues are aired, not so much the downsides as the farmers won't talk about those. Later in the book we see an identical pattern with chicken farming in immense numbers. Cattle, dairy and beef, also sheep and goats, are taken in separate chapters, and there is one on pigs, while horses fit in and around, usually the mustangs rounded up for meat, nobody noticing the worked-out carthorses or retired racehorses. Brief mentions are given to farmed deer, bison, llamas, rabbits, etc.The author gives us some really nice visits to smaller farms where the people work with the soil. They mostly use rotational grazing and sometimes have sheep following cattle, chickens scratching and eating insects. No mention of ducks and geese, used in damp pasture to eat snails which carry liver fluke. I like that herding dogs are used to guard flocks of sheep or chickens, and predations ceased. Dairying is hard work. Imagine milking seventy goats by hand twice a day. These farms are either organic or nearly, with no hormones used. Farming is hard in general, but the folks enjoy it and lead a healthy life. The author tells us mostly they eat less meat now, but the meat tastes better.See my longer review on Goodreads. About the Author
John Boston is Director of the Prisoners' Rights Project of the New York City Legal Aid Society. Mr. Boston received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law. He began his career as a research coordinator for The Defender Project of the Twentieth Century Fund in New York City. He has also contributed research and writing concerning prison population issues for the Correctional Association of New York and began his tenure as the Legal Aid Society as a staff attorney. Mr. Boston is widely published, with numerous articles on prisoners, their rights and circumstances nationwide, and has litigated several cases pertaining to prisoner's rights. He also participated in a national working group with the ACLU in response to the Prison Litigation Reform Act, reviewing briefs and pleadings, consulting with prisoner advocates, preparing CLE and practice materials. He is on the faculty of the Practicing Law Institute and co-administrator of the Prisoners' Rights section of the website www.probono.com. Daniel E. Manville is an attorney specializing in civil rights litigation. Mr. Manville has a Bachelor in Science from Central Michigan University (1976); a Bachelor Degree in General Studies from Wayne State University (1976); a Juris Doctorate from Antioch School of Law (now University of District of Columbia Law School) (1981); a Master in Criminal Justice, Michigan State University (1985). From 1988 through 2003, he was in private practice concentrating on providing representation to prisoners. From 2003 to summer of 2007, Manville was the Clinical Staff Attorney for Wayne State University Civil Rights Litigation Clinic. I sent this to someone who is, currently, incarcerated in jail. The contents of this book has saved his life. He was denied medical treatment. Yet, he pressed on, educating the authorities of his civil rights, while referencing this book. He was able to manuever through the system for appropriate medical treatment. An emergent procedure was performed at a neighboring hospital in the nick of time.

This is the Fourth Edition and it just gets better and better each revision. We owe a debt to Boston and Manville. This book is not a replacement for Hertz and Liebman Habeas Corpus or such similar treatise.This is not a Habeas Corpus book. However the knowledge and skills in this Boston and Manville can help with any type of litigation, including post conviction remedies. It is very hard to explain to someone who has not been in prison how different life is from that of a free man. One of the extraordinary features of prison life is the loss of freedoms and rights we so take for granted that our mind does not even reflect upon them when free. Just the simple act of going for a cup of coffee, real coffee or making your own drink, calling someone to whom you wish to speak, learning what you need to learn, sleeping when you are tired, getting medicine when you are sick, being in a quiet place, or having some semblance of safety, all of this is very, very different in prison. Of course you know that, don’t you? The details of everyday life stripped away. That is the purpose of prison, to change your life. NOW, compound that with unquestioned fact that prisoners still have Constitutional Rights and ask what those rights are and how to enforce them. Consider the right of a prisoner to not have his Constitutional Rights while a Prisoner, violated, and you have many of the subjects covered in this book. It is the right of a guilty man to only be punished according to law. It can also aid an innocent man in understanding basic skills of law to further his search for freedom. You are in prison and you may be like so many, many others who have been there, You are all alone. Perhaps no one will help you either to get out or to survive as a human being in a cage but who one day may be freed. Few people want to keep an innocent man in prison and I would hope that few of us want to punish a guilty man except according to what the law allows. Well, welcome to Law School. We are unusual and very lucky here in America, that we actually have a legal system that is capable of enforcing the law for all citizens and if you can try to understand that being a prisoner does not take away your rights as an American that will go a long way to understanding the relationship between the imprisoned and the Courts. That is the role of this Boston and Manville book. Books such as this and there are many others (but this is one of the best), can actually allow you to reach out of the prison walls and grab Justice. A little bit of Justice can enter your Prison and go to you and those you may wish to aid. Manville and Boston have written this volume for those who are willing to accept the academic challenge that dedication to learning and study can have the practical result of protection of the imprisoned. In my opinion this book is equally valuable to those not in prison in that the fundamental legal knowledge you will acquire by study can only enhance and protect your life and that of your family regardless of which side of the bars you are on. So, we have this wonderful one volume treatise of practically one thousand pages, which can take a helpless imprisoned man or a legally ignorant free man and give him a powerful ability to see Justice. This book does not cover everything. A normal law library for those who still love books can easily consist of 500 to 1000 volumes or more, depending on whether you want law reports etc. Most people also need on line data base access for case law and other knowledge. But what Manville and Boston have done is to create an extremely well written, clear, detailed, thorough encapsulation of the law that should be read by every American. In spite of its title it is NOT just for prisoners, it is for everyone who wants a deep, technical and enhancing understanding of American Law. This volume covers such legal topics as State Law Claims in Federal Court, Personal Safety in Prison, Religious Practice in Prison, Overview of the Legal System, Basic Legal Skills so that you can actually litigate a case, Section 1983 Actions, Preparation of your case for Court, Legal Research, Legal Writing, Motion Practice, Torts and on and on and on. The book contains far more than a short review like this can justify and unfortunately far more than many attorney may know. If you believe that the Law is the possession of every man and it is your responsibility to learn the academic and practical skills necessary to exercise the legal rights available to you as an American, then this book is for you. It is well annotated and covers just about any issue you might encounter. If it doesn't give you the answer, it will at least give you a thorough overview and enough cases to get your research headed in the right direction. At this price, there is simply no excuse for not having this book on your shelf.

Parents should give this book to every teen with a learner permit. It should be handed out in every drivers ed class for those of any age. Importantly Mr. Brindle covers distracted driving beyond just the warnings about cellphone use. I also liked the advice he gave about making all the adjustments to mirrors, A/C, radio, seats before a driver gets underway. Throughout the book Mr. Brindle provides hyperlinks to sources for statistics, as well as useful references, products and other survival/safety books. As a former EMT and Outdoor Emergency Care instructor, I have made it a habit to have emergency first aid supplies in my vehicles and the gloves I keep are high temperature resistant types. Mr Brindle has excellent advice.
Everyone needs a reminder, so this book is suitable for experienced drivers that need to be reminded of some rules of the road and driving techniques they have forgotten. And it's excellent for learning drivers, of course.
