About the Author

G. J. Meyer is the author of two popular works of history, The Tudors and A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, as well as Executive Blues and The Memphis Murders. He received an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and later was awarded Harvard University’s Nieman Fellowship in Journalism. He has taught at colleges in Des Moines, St. Louis, and New York, and now lives in Wiltshire, England.

After watching the Netflix series on the Borgia's I was curious to know what the Borgia's were actually like. I read the very good "The Borgia's and the Enemies", by Christopher Hibbert first to get a standard view of the Borgia's before reading G.J. Meyer's work. I found G.J. Meyer's writing a pleasure to read. His description of the political and sociological landscape of Europe from the 1300 to the early 1500's, his sketches of people, towns, kingdoms and cultures are efficient and very astute. His knowledge of the subjects he is writing about is impressive. Meyer does and remarkable job humanizing Rodrigo and Lucretia Borgia. Meyer has convinced me that they were likely among the best people that anyone in their positions could have been, human and fallible, but far closer to his well researched conclusions than the standard view of them for the past 500 years. Cesare, well... he did inspire Machiavelli in his writing of The Prince. In his exploration of Cesare, Meyer adds depth and detail, but doesn't make excuses. More important than agreeing or disagreeing with the thesis that Meyer uses as the focus of his fine work, this book is good history in general, and a great read. After reading it you will have a better feel for the era. One point I recall from another reviewer is that Meyer tends to doubt the dirt about the Borgia's but believes the dirt about other figures, like the indomitable Giuliano della Rovere. The point is valid and I kept it in mind during my entire time reading this book, but even being careful to be intellectually vigilant, I feel that Meyer does a remarkable job of keeping his conclusions from harming the quality of his work. I felt like I was getting a fascinating intimate peek into the mystery of "who were the people behind the myth?" that has made the name Borgia infamous, while at the same time getting an excellent picture of the basic landscape from which Western culture has been born. I highly recommend this book. As for Giuliano della Rovere; it will be interesting to see what I can learn about him.

Reality truly exceeds fantasies in the history of the Borgias. In this well researched book, the author provides facts, possible interpretations and questions about this powerful and sensational family as well as the background information of the 15-16th century European politics and culture. His writing style is so vivid and lively, the stories kept me captivated for days,-- my version, perhaps similar to binge watching the Game of Thrones for other people. The mysterious complexity of church politics and individuals survival, greed, desire and perhaps some true and some deluded sense of piety and justification, is both perplexing and deliciously melodramatic to read. It makes you realize, sadly, that the endless and clearly foreseen cycle of vengeance among the rivaling powers has never discouraged them to change courses to this day.

This was the reviewer’s first foray into Borgia history, which leaves him at a loss to speak of this history within the context of the broader history of Renaissance Italy and, in particular, the Borgias. All the present reviewer can offer is their personal experience with this revisionist history. Hopefully, this will be of some use to the reader and will inspire them to pursue the history of the Borgias and Renaissance Italy.The Borgias was a compelling, but emotionally distant, history. G. J. Myer brings the reader, calmly and methodically, into a re-reading and a problematizing of the Borgia Legend with particular cool and a great deal of discretion. Given the salacious nature of the author’s subject matter this works extraordinarily well and lends a sense of probity which is often, according to the author’s general sentiment, missing from Borgia histories.Myer lays out the case for Alexander VI not being the father of Cesare and his siblings with care, and interrogates the flimsy evidence for this with equal care. Those readers not interested in a careful reading of Borgia history will, perhaps, find this work tedious, but those interested in a careful re-interpretation of the Borgias will find much to satisfy them here.Much is done to re-examine the hedonistic and perverse reputation of Alexander VI. In the course of this re-examination much of the legend is exposed not as history but myth. What is not stripped away and exposed is contextualized within the frame of Renaissance Italy’s politics, geopolitics, and cultural milieu. Occasionally Myer may be over-indulgent in this context, but for the most part it is an excellent re-interpretation of the facts and the exposing of myth which has passed itself off as history for some five hundred years.In sum, this is an excellent family history of a much maligned and misrepresented political dynasty.Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.A must read for those interested in Machiavelli’s The Prince, Renaissance Italy, and the history of this powerful and much misunderstood family.

Meyer has an engaging method of writing in addition to providing a tremendous amount of historical, political, geographic, and social context to understand the unfolding life of Rodrigo Borgia (Pope Alexander). The contextualization opens up the myriad intrigues of the many families that battled for power, land, and finances through the second half of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The geo-political status of the various states in Italy become more clear as the story progresses. Meyer has grounded his analytical argument in view of the current and age-old histories and folklore about the Borgias and makes a clear case for his disputes with common knowledge about Rodrigo and his famous family. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in this period and in this intriguing family.

I loved this book for so many reasons! Excitement! Lots of Action! Family Spirit! Important issues weaved into the story line such as sex trafficking and school bullying! I held my breath to get through all the nonstop insanity an AI takeover! The fun perk of being a Ryan Schow fan is that he pulls in a previous Heroine from another series to make a subtle appearance! Fun!

This book is about three Latino brothers and the plot and narrative moves across the country and ends up in Chicago. It was easy to follow the story and the dialog, interesting and exciting; the mechanics were excellent, except for:ITS = possessive caseIT'S = "it is, it has" verb contractionJust the opposite of what you would expect.DO write out the names and locations to keep track of the characters, as the chapters jump around among three or four different groups.Looking forward to the next installment.

This book is amazing for all the right reasons! The characters are just like us; they have issues that they struggle with on an ordinary level and not on a super hero level. The themes of family, gangs, drug smuggling, and sex trafficking will touch each and everyone one of us who this series. Not only that, but the way our technology has exponentially developed in just the past ten years make this story very believable and possible at any time. Starting with the Last War Series and continuing in the Age of Embers I have learned a great amount about AI and survival. I’m sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next book!!

After enjoying his Last Wars Series so much, This grittier, meaner series has upped the ante! Set in Chicago this time the AI Queen is tearing up the city while one brother with his Guatemalan Bad Ass lady friend fight to get there for their families. Another Brother is fighting to keep his family together and punish the lowlifes who assaulted his daughter. He's a Dea undercover agent who has decided to wipe out the Cartel street thugs while his world is tearing itself apart! Awesome story! Can't recommend it enough!

I really enjoyed reading this latest installment of Ryan's books. I loved how the plot was tied together. It was relevant to news and theories floating around on the web. His exacting description of each character was excellent and vivid. I can't wait for the next installment.

What a rush of action. Fast paced and full of destruction but with characters you grow to love. I can't wait for the next book. If you like action packed apocalyptic scenarios, you will love this and The Last War series. You don't need to have read the other series first, as this book and new series can stand on its own.

Ryan is an amazing writer and this series is fantastic. I was wowed by this book. Ryan took the series to the next level. His intigrity to the dystopian world is fantastic and this book is intriguing to say the least.

This book was really intense I had a hard time putting it down until I finished it! Has a lot of action and the main characters are awesome! Loved it!

After suffering through The Knot Wedding Planner and finding it supremely unhelpful, this came out and has been SO great. It's comprehensive, easy to use and not just a book of lists and unhelpful blank spaces to write things. She fills the planner with good advice, interesting detail and shortcuts to make wedding planning easy and fun. You won't regret buying this!

This book walked me through planning my DIY, creative wedding without (much) freaking out. I was never married before, in my 40s, and not the sort of person who had been dreaming of her wedding since childhood. I also wanted a mixture of nontraditional and traditional elements, and badly wanted to avoid spending a ton of money. A Practical Wedding Planning gives sensible options for all kinds of avenues; it would work if you wanted a big white wedding, or if you just wanted a small party in your backyard. Our wedding was perfect for us, inexpensive, and so well-organized and delegated per Meg's advice that I was able to just show up and enjoy every minute!

Such a great book. If you read her blog and are wondering if this book is worth it, take it from me it totally is. My partner is very frugal, the type of person who always tells me to get books from the library, but we were both very pleased with how helpful this book is. He congratulated me on what a goodbye it was. The reason you should buy your own is because there are lots of places for you to jot down thoughts and ideas and little worksheets that are very helpful.

I wish that I had read this earlier on, because it would have saved me SO SO SO SO SO much trouble. Unfortunately I bought this after I was well into the planning process. If you just got engaged, I highly recommend this. If you're 3 months out from your wedding (like myself) it's probably not as useful. I can't tell you the amount of passages I read where I thought "OMG, where was this information 6 months ago?!?!?".

One Hundred Years of Solitude really isn't as difficult or confusing as some reviews make it seem. People make it seem like it's impossible to get through so many repeating names, but even when the characters share a name, almost every single character (until the last generation--and by that point the first characters are long gone so that it wasn't really confusing) has a unique name. How is that confusing? And anyway, it doesn't take too many chapters or a genius to figure out they all share the same names for a reason. Also, I must say, if you don't like the first 50-100 pages, you probably aren't going to like the rest of the book. It stays like that... Plus, the first Jose Arcadio Buendia is one of the more entertaining characters in the book, in my opinion. But, I think Aureliano Segundo and Remedios The Beauty were the highlights in this book. I was cracking up throughout their scenes.Although I feel I missed a lot about what was going on symbolically whilst reading (mostly a lot of the religious stuff), I still found this book to be extremely enjoyable. It's inspiring and surreal, whimsical, funny and sad--and it all causes a person to feel very introspective, because it blends so many aspects of what makes up a person's life. I looked up some of the themes and motifs after reading to make sure I caught everything, and I prefer many of my own interpretations. And I think Gabriel Garcia Marquez meant to write it in a way that was a more personal experience. At the end notes, he mentions in an interview how he wanted to capture the way an abuela tells stories to her grandchildren-- and I got that vibe the whole time. And a lot of times, the surreal in crazy old latin american stories is what makes you remember the life lessons behind the story. And I feel like that's what happened here.But again, I feel like most people I know wouldn't like this book, and I can see where they're coming from. It definitely isn't for everyone. And I must stress that that's not coming from a pretentious place. His writing style will be frustrating to many readers I'd presume, because it's really just incredibly unique. But, if you can get past the style (long paragraphs, little fluctuation in narration, mentioning things that haven't really happened yet, or no main protagonist... etc) and the repetition of names, it really isn't super complicated or anything.It isn't perfect, but It's great. And even though I started this review planning to give it four stars, after writing it--I think it's an important enough, and intricately weaved enough, and a unique enough a piece to warrant a 5-star from this fella.

this is a stunning work, with a translation that is worthy of the author. i was an english teacher and a colleague had dual citizenship with colombia and she read both versions of this work and couldn't decide between the two. i've only read the english translation, but even the translation puts it in the top tier of all the novels i've read. that's good news and bad news maybe. that means that the work is easily available to english-speakers, but that doesn't make it any easier to read as a work of literature. my guess is that it can be read on several levels at once, but i've never talked to anyone about the novel who wasn't a lit major. this work is so different and so interesting, you should try reading it no matter what your school experience with literature has been.

Confusing? Lengthy? Lot’s of characters, all with practically the same name? Yes, but all for an intended purpose. I picked up this book for an AP Lit project and browsed through some of the reviews to see just what I was about to read. There were plenty of “oh, this is so confusing” and “there are just too many of the same names” reviews. But there were also the reviews that focused on the enriching side of the book. The side that people often overlook. So I figured I would give it a try. It is not a book I would normally have picked up, but it soon surprised me. I remember flipping to the first page and reading the very first line of the book: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.” Already I was drawn in. There was so much going on in that first line, the rest of the book just had to be interesting too. And it didn’t fail. The book goes through generations of families as they tell their story over time. There is no set protagonist, which bothered me at first, but then I became comfortable with it as I continued reading. Throughout the book you discover your favorite characters with their quirky personalities. The Buendia family is full of weird adventures and mystical encounters. From the gypsies to the invention of ice, the book jumps around from sentence to sentence illustrating the personality of this family simply in syntax. There is love, civil war, death, magic, and redemption in it’s many pages. Many reviews had issues with the numerous similar names and found the book simply confusing. But if you were reading the book with a close eye, you realize that it was all for a reason. It was written almost “as if the world were repeating itself.” And as you struggle to read, “time put things in their place.” Yes, these are quotes from the book itself and are so direct to the theme and overall meaning that they seem to be overlooked. The book’s confusing almost repetitive nature was to illustrate a grand motif. The circular motif. How everything comes around in time. That fate is such a huge force in everything that happens. Overall, I would give this book 4 stars. That seems low for all the good things I had to say about it, but in the end I rate it lower than 5 stars simply because I struggled to relate with it. It was so different from the books I normally read that it became hard to really be drawn into it. I did love however the circle motif and how everything wraps up just as it should. Sure, all of the crazy adventures and writing style was interesting and unique, but it didn’t capture me personally as well as it may have captured someone else. If I were to read this again (or another book by Marquez), however, I believe that I would feel more comfortable with the writing style and mystic side of the culture and I would relate to it better. I would suggest this book to someone who wants to try and read something different from a lot of other “mainstream” books out there.

This is not a coffee table book, it is more a of a memoir with images. But, the stories that Leifer tells about his subjects, or pursuing a shot, or relationships are terrific. There are so many great stories about not only his images but his experiences. Leifer might not be the greatest photographer, but his images are iconic, and the stories behind the images make them legendary.

Great book...photos as well as text! A must for every sports fanatic. Leifer's photographs are phenomenal and the stories behind these accomplished athletes a tribute to their drive and diligence.

First bought the book with high expectations for the photos. They did not disappoint, but the highlight was the author's narratives. And the many covers from SI and Time evoked memory after memory. The book's cover photo of Ali was especially poignant given his death in recent days. Thank you Neil!
