About the Author
While attending college at Nihon University, in 1988, Kentaro Miura debuted a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist Of The North Star).In 1990, the first volume Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga entitled Japan. Miura's fame grew after Berserk began "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of this masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan made, ranging from statues and action figures, to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentaro Miura received the second place in the Tezuka Osamu (Astro Boy) Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan.

The Berserk manga series by Kentaro Miura is one that speaks for itself. Often known as the "Game of Thrones" of manga, the story is complex and ingenious, the art is godlike, and the content is very adult. It has seen several anime adaptations, each with their own pros and cons, but nothing beats the original manga.While this series has seen many omnibus (multiple books in one) releases both in Japan and in other languages such as in Europe (I know the German release has one off the top of my head), it has always been a single-book edition in English. With 40 volumes now in Japanese (Dark Horse still has no release date for volume 40 as of this writing), and a retail price of nearly $600 for all the books, Berserk certainly is an expensive and lengthy hobby to get into. An omnibus format is preferable by many collectors such as myself, but if this series had seen a standard 3-in-1 paperback release such as the VizBigs of Dragon Ball Z, Vagabond, etc, I probably would not have double dipped (I already own every single volume). But when Dark Horse announced a deluxe edition of the manga, with leather hardback, in full magazine size, I just had to get it, and I can guarantee you it is worth it.Now on to the book itself. You can see how this edition is sized compared to the single volumes in the pictures attached, and it is certainly much bigger. The illustrations are much easier to follow, and the sound effects, originally untranslated in the first 11 volumes by Dark Horse, are now translated, which was a welcome addition. The faux leather binding is very nice as well. Collectors will be happy to hear that all three textless, original cover art pieces for the first 3 volumes are included at the back of the book on glossy paper. The manga itself is not glossy paper, but I would say that does not reduce its value at all. No other pages are in color, unfortunately, but that is just how DH was given the materials from the Japanese publisher. It has a ribbon bookmark on the spine, and the spine itself is also sewn and not glued, so you do not have to worry when laying it open on a table. At the end of the book is a one-page background on Kentaro Miura. While this omnibus will save a little bit of horizontal shelf space, it is much taller. My only gripe with the book is that it was printed in China, unlike with the rest of the series which was printed in the USA, but seeing as there are no visible drawbacks or obvious cheap decisions, I will keep my review at a full 5/5. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all my single volumes if I keep getting these Deluxe Editions. Hah!I received this volume from Amazon for nearly 50% off due to its preorder price, which was very nice. Otherwise, its $50 retail value is probably pretty pricey for many. For those looking to get into Berserk for the first time, this edition will probably not save you any money (although it is very worth it!) It is unfortunate that the book seems to be selling out, and many preorders have been pushed back weeks if not months while Dark Horse prints more. Good for Miura and DH, but not so ideal for the consumers. Hope it gets sorted out soon, Amazon should really place caps on preorders for stock they do not have.Can't wait to see more of these editions! Will probably take 4 or more years for it to catch up (not to mention Miura's hiatuses), so if you're not that big of a collector and just want to read the series, the single volumes are probably your better option.
GOOD: The 1st Berserk Deluxe volume covers the first 3 standard size volumes of the Manga while having much larger pages and a handsome hard cover with Guts' brand embossed into the front. The paper used is noticeably higher quality compared to the regular books.BAD: The largely increased page size caused some blow-up issues. Some smaller panels or flawed finer details become much more obvious once resized.My book arrived slightly damaged from shipping. 3 of the 8 corner covers of the book have bent in, dog-eared impact damage locations and the front of the book has a small but noticeable pen width half-inch indent on the top of the front cover. A single bubble wrap slip case could have mitigated such damage but it came in only a plastic lined Manila envelope. The envelope had been ripped at multiple points and taped over.
I have just received this goliath of a copy of berserk and its way more of a better print than I thought it would be.If your a hard fan of berserk and love collecting manga this is a must buy, it has a simple design like Death note blackedition, is tall as the Battle angel Alita manga prints, and its thicc real thicc.

Reviewing the content alone this is a 5 star product, Berserk is one of the best series around and if you're new to the series this is a great place to start.That said the manga has been in print for sometime now and what you're most likely to be interested in is what makes this "Deluxe" edition standout from what might already exist on your shelf. Well to be honest...not as much as I would have hoped. There is nothing in the way of extras, no interviews, designs, creator commentary, etc. and most disappointing in my mind this edition still does not include the color pages in their original form (yep still black and white here). It's still a good product, the binding is solid and the size increase feels substantial which really brings out the art, but if you already own berserk there's nothing here you don't already have. If you're brand new to the series you may consider going the deluxe route, but for long time fans looking to upgrade you're probably better off getting the digital editions if you just want bigger pictures.

I loved this book so much. The characters felt incredibly vivid and real. It was one of those books (for me at least) that I didn’t want to end. I was immersed in this community and storyline and even ended up reading it again immediately.As someone in medicine I also appreciate how accurate the medical situations and language were handled.
Loved the philosophical use of Multiverse while characters are living their busy lives and experiencing physical reactions to pending doom. Do we react to disaster as other animals do? Fun read with interesting characters and suspenseful events that kept me reading until I finished the novel. Hope-Day's first novel. Can't wait for more.
Kate Hope Day does an excellent job of weaving these characters through the trials and tribulations of everyday life, complicated by a blip or glitch in the time-space continuum. A great and engaging book, you’ll read it fast because it’s too good to stop!
The descriptive language that Kate used throughout the story created such strong visual and mental images that I felt transformed into the story's location. In addition, the main characters were so well developed that you couldn't wait to turn the page and find out what happens next. The twists and turns throughout the story keeps you guessing to the end.
The story is centered on a small mountain community in Oregon and is told through several characters: A research scientist attempting to balance his career and home life; his wife who is facing the same challenge and some additional ones besides; the neighbor who is grieving the loss of her mother; a young mother who is trying to find a way to be both a mother and a scholar. Each of these characters begins to see disturbing visions of alternate visions of themselves, ones who have made different choices which has caused major differences in their realities.The narrative proceeds in short bursts that are related from different points of view. This technique makes the story move along quite quickly, but coupled with the large number of characters makes it a bit confusing, at least in the beginning. As the story progresses and the individual plot lines entwine more the pace quickens and the confusion lessens.The ending is left rather open, leaving the possibility for further stories from this group of characters.
When reading “If, Then†by Kate Hope Day, it comes as no surprise to learn that Kate Hope Day, a former HBO Producer, has already sold the television rights to this unusual novel.“If, Then†takes us to a small community in Oregon and introduces a variety of characters, all of whom are starting to have strange “visionsâ€. What are they? WHY are they?I have been fascinated by the “multiverse†theory for many years; that at any decision point in our lives there splits off an infinite number of “parallel universesâ€. This novel gets its title from those kinds of “If X, then X†decisions/outcomes.But what will surly work well on screen, doesn’t quite gel on the page, and some of the “visions†are inconsistent; some characters see other versions of themselves, yet cannot be seen, but others can actually step into the visions. It’s definitely intriguing, and if you like shows like the STARZ series, “Counterpart†(as I do!), you’ll want to watch for this coming TV series.
This had a great start with characters well drawn as well as the settings. From reading some of the plot before getting the book to read, I knew that there was an element of a parallel universe that added weight to what the characters were experiencing. Four characters, within the same community, are drawn by the author that experience their other selves: Ginny, a surgeon whose work takes her from her family quite a lot; Mark, her husband, a wildlife scientist whose trying to tie animal behavior towards volcano predictions; Samara, their neighbor whose mother recently died; and Cass, a new mother who revisits her decision to leave her scholastic career behind for motherhood. All live close together in a mountain community were an impending volcanic explosion is going to happen in the near future.The problem, is that the author can't draw the parallel worlds together into a coherent storyline. Perhaps. on-screen this work will work in a seamless timeline that makes sense to the viewer; but as a novel, the suspension of belief never materialized and the characters lost their identity betwixt worlds, leaving the reader caring less for what happens to exactly who?

Peter Hitchens’ new book, The Phoney Victory: The World War II Illusion, is characteristically well-written, and necessary for anyone who believes any of the myths about the Second World War it dispels (quite successfully, in my view). Among the most provocative of these are the necessity of the 1939 guarantee to Poland; the appeasement narrative; the special relationship between the US and Britain, which did not (and arguably does not) exist; the common view of Sir Winston Churchill, a great man, and not an especially good one; and the justness of the area bombardment of German cities.
This book is by what we Americans might term "the other Hitchens," who is a London Sunday Mail columnist, blogger and public intellectual. He is, by the rough standards of our polarized politics, "conservative," but very different than the rg-chewing variety we're used to in the US. This is a book that will quite possibly change your mind about the received wisdom of the Second World War, Churchill and US-UK relations. Reading this book prompted me to go back and re-read Nicholson Baker's "Human Smoke," another revisionist history of that period. I don't think you can really, fully understand what happened in the 1930-1940 period without giving this book serious consideration. It is part of a growing re-appraisal, in particular, of Churchill, "appeasement" and the war that, more than anything, made our contemporary world.
I enjoyed reading this book and it does compliment Patrick J. Buchanan's writing on the topic. However, the author paid too little attention to the monetary consequences of the war to britain. After the war, the dollar became the sole international reserve currency. If the UK needed to import something, oil for instance, it had to pay for it in dollars. This rendered the Empire dependent upon America.
A well researched and interesting book on things many have decided to keep silent. However, some details as the insistence on the "wrong" use of resources for bombing German cities being detracted from the resources for fighting the U-Boats show a little bit of amateurism. The Battle for the Atlantic was decided in March-April 1943, and that is approximately when the bombing of Germany began in earnest. They were, thus, not really simultaneous.There are other examples like this one, but they don't diminish the book, which could have been called "Unpleasant Truths".

Although the author rambled a bit at times, this is a good comprehensive study of the life and writings of Moses. The book help one understand Moses and Israel in the context of the time of history in which they lived. I was impressed with his descriptions of Moses' relationship with God.
I really enjoyed this book on Moses,it went in depth in the Bible and caused me to look real close at how I thought about God and my honesty toward Him.
Reading this book help me understand who Moses really is.
It is like being a fly on Moses robe and seeing all he goes through, from his birth, growing up in Egypt, and eventually leading the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Full historical information that helps to really understand what Moses and the people experienced.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is a discussion between Jack Barnes and Mexican and Mexican American coal miners from Utah fighting to organize their mine about how this book speaks to the needs of workers in the 20th Century. There are more pictures, and expanded notes.Farrell Dobbs was transformed by the struggles in this book. He had wanted to be a judge. He had been a forman. He had tried to run a small business. The depression threw him into the coal yards of Minneapolis. He became one of the workers who helped unionize the coal yards, then unionize the truckers, then turn the Teamsters into an industrial union, because they had the opportunity to meet up with the revolutionary Marxist ideas supplied by communists like the Dunne Brothers. This is the story not of Dobbs alone, but of the great Minneapolis Strikes of 1934 that led the way for the CIO. This is the story of how workers can bust through the conservatism, the apathy, the company loving bureaucracy in their unions, to demonstrate their power. This story is told by a man who was there, as a coal yard worker, a truck driver, the union's organizer. To any working person who wants to know how to fight the bosses and win, you have to read this book. The author, Farrell Dobbs, was born into a working-class family in Missouri in 1907, worked his way into a management job, started his own business, and hoped to go to law school and become a judge. But his plans were cut short by the great depression of the 1930s. In 1933, he found himself working in a Minneapolis coal yard and met coworkers who asked him to join an effort to organize the workers into a branch of the Teamsters union. The rest is history. In 1934, Dobbs played a central role as the members of Teamsters Local 574 carried out a series of three dramatic strikes that succeeded in making Minneapolis a union town. To do this, they had to battle the boss-led Citizens Alliance, the police, the top Teamster bureaucrats, as well as a "friend of labor" Governor, who talked out of both sides of his mouth. This book gives a blow-by-blow account of all of this, and is a real handbook for how to conduct a strike effectively. Key to their victory was a union leadership that included members of the Communist League of America, a revolutionary socialist group, which later became the Socialist Workers Party, which Dobbs joined and led on a national level for decades. THIS REVIEW IS ALSO BEING USED FOR TEAMSTER POWER WHICH IS A CONTINUATION OF THE STORY PRESENTED HERE. THE POLITICAL POINTS ARE VALID FOR BOTH BOOKS.ORGANIZE WALMART! ORGANIZE THE SOUTH! These are the slogans which outline the tasks that the American labor movement, particularly the organized trade union movement under the AFL-CIO and the Change to Win Coalition, need to address. With those tasks in mind it was refreshing for this old militant to re-read Farrell Dobbs' analysis of the fight to organize the truckers in the 1930's. This volume, and an earlier one detailing the struggles to organize truckers in Minneapolis, are little handbooks for model labor organizing. Dobbs himself was instrumental in organizing the truckers of Minneapolis in the great strikes in that city in 1934 and as documented here the later, successful organizing of the over the road drivers in the Midwest which created the modern, powerful Teamsters International Union. He was, more importantly, a supporter of what later in the decade became the Socialist Workers Party- American section of the Trotsky-led Forth International.Whatever else may be true about Dobbs this man could organize workers. Why? The last sentence in the previous paragraph gives the answer. In the modern labor movement it is not enough to be a militant on the picket line but one must also have a political approach to labor actions. With the merging of corporate and governmental interests on the labor question in the modern state militants better think politically. As the December, 2005 unsuccessful struggle of the transport workers in New York City demonstrated militants better know the enemy and his tactics well. Moreover, these days, unlike in the 1930's when it went without question by advanced workers, it is as important to know there is an enemy. On the other hand think what it would be like to have a political militant like Dobbs organizing the drivers of those 7000 trucks that Wal-Mart owns to distribute its merchandise. You get my drift. Read what he has to say carefully.To even introduce this militant labor leader of the 1930's is to state the fundamental problem of today's labor leaders. They do not exist in the modern labor movement. Yes, there are militants out there in the rank and file but militant leaders are no longer produced and that is the rub. Unlike the strategy of independent political action which underlined Dobbs' work the strategy of today's labor leaders can be summed up in two words- class collaboration. That is a strategy of dependence by the labor movement on the good will of the `friends of labor', essentially the Democratic Party- not to fight for victory in the streets but by what at times amounts to parliamentary cretinism. Just start to organize Wal-Mart seriously or organize the South and militants will quickly see who their `friends' are.The natural audience for this book are today's labor activists so the reviewer would draw attention to the following issues that Dobbs and his associates had to confront and which militants today will confront in any serious organizing efforts. (1)The role of the labor bureaucracy in limiting the scope of struggle. (2) The role of governmental mediators, courts, legislation and the above-mentioned `friends of labor' in curtailing the struggle. (3) The role of scabs and others, including government troops, who will try to break the up the struggle. On the positive side- the following should be noted; have your own publicity organ to get out your message; organize other labor and pro-labor sources to assist in strike action; anticipate that governmental and corporate sources will try to `freeze' workers out so have your own transport, commissary and medical operations. Finally, in the words of the old Wobblie song by Joe Hill- "Don't Mourn, Organize!!*******Added January 7, 2012No question over the past several years (really decades but it is just more public and in our face now) the American working class has taken it on the chin, taken it on the chin big time. What with job losses (and jobs not coming back), paying for bank bail-outs, home foreclosures, effective tax increases (since the rich refuse to pay we pay), mountains of consumer debt, and student loan debt as a lure for the kids there is little to glow about in harsh light of the American Dream. In short, it is not secret that the working class has faced, is facing and, apparently, will continue to face an erosion of its material well-being for the foreseeable future something not seen by most people since the 1930s Great Depression, the time of our grandparents (or, ouch, great-grandparents).That is this condition will continue unless we take some lessons from those very 1930s and struggle, struggle as a class against the imperial capitalist monster that seems to have all the card decks stacked against us. And that is where the late labor leader (and, for a time, revolutionary socialist) Farrell Dobb's little book on his (and his comrades) experiences in organizing the truckers of Minneapolis, Teamster's Rebellion, can help inspire new generations of working people, organized, unorganized, unemployed, homeless, houseless, and just plain desperate, to get out from under. Specific conditions may be different just now from what they were in Dobbs' 1934 Minneapolis but after re-reading this little organizing gem there was something very, very current about what our forebears faced down there and then.I write this little review with a special purpose, a purpose driven by the rise of the Occupy movement, in mind. Although the Occupy movement is right now as I write going through some growing pains there are some disturbing trends that I have witnessed since its inception. The main trend for my purposes here includes a rather standoffish attitude toward the working-class, especially the organized working-class, as central to the struggle for a more equitable society rather than as just another numbered victim of American imperialism's relentless assault on, well, if not the ninety-nine percent then some large percentage of the population. And that is where the lessons of the 1934 Teamster's strikes comes in as a helpful antidote to that notion. As well as very helpful guide to what Occupy already does fairly well-organize auxiliary aspects of the class struggle like kitchens, libraries, speakers' bureaus and the like.A few highlights will illustrate my point. Minneapolis was a notorious anti-labor commercial town (flour, copper, farm goods, etc.) for generations leading up to the 1930s. It had a well-organized, ruthless, and, when necessary, armed business-centered Citizen's Alliance that mostly kept out the unions for generations. Therefore a central demand, yes a front and center in your face demand, of the working-class there was for independent union recognition by the bosses (they recognized only their own "company" unions, or better, dealt with each individual worker separately). That was the first order of business for those militants, including the leading revolutionary militants (mainly Trotskyists in this situation but others as well). Along with that desire was the idea that those allies (inside workers who loaded the trucks, etc.) of the truckers should also be organized in one industry-wide union rather than the old craft union idea of separate unions for each category of worker (in short, to break the old "divide and conquer" strategy of the bosses and comfort zone of the labor skates).Now this scenario may not immediately strike any current Occupy sympathizer as particularly germane for today's struggles but that view would be short-sighted. For what Minneapolis (and the other main class battles of the 1930s in places like San Francisco, Toledo, Flint, and Detroit) demonstrates is the social power of the working class to hit the economic royalists (the name coined for the one- per centers of that day) to shut the capitalist down where it hurts- in their pocketbooks and property. The bosses will let us rant all day, will gladly take (and throw away) all our petitions, will let us use their parks (up to a point as we have found out), and curse them to eternity as long as we don't touch the two "p's." And that is why it is profoundly mistaken to assume that the working class is only along for the ride like everybody else in Occupy. The various recent West Coast port actions is a somewhat skewed way (the longshoremen refused to cross the community picket lines rather than directly shut the ports themselves but the effect was the same-ports shutdown for a period) demonstrate that same proposition.Beyond that central premise that is bed-rock to understand this book is filled with all kinds of information that is also important to know for any major show-down struggle with the bosses. Such class-war actions have to be carefully planned using every resource available (not just some happenstance thing put together at a whim, or less). So reading about the soup kitchens, the hospital, the make-shift garages (to transport roving pickets, a necessity in the many-sited trucking industry), provisions for entertainment, and a labor daily newspaper to counteract the bourgeois biases of the press sounded awfully familiar to me, and should to you. Some parts Occupy has got right, got right right from the start.What, disturbingly, has not been right or has been some what blurred today is a clear understanding of the relationship between the bosses and their state (the cops, National Guard, mayors, governors, courts, prisons, etc.) and we the risen people. The militants (beyond the hard "reds") in Minneapolis probably had some illusions in those institutions starting out, although probably less than those today, a few generations removed from those hard class battles. They soon "learned" about the cops in their three-stage (three separate strike actions from February to August 1934) fight. Learned about cops mostly at the wrong end of a night-stick (or tear-gas grenade) in the famous "Battle of Deputies' Run". About the courts and their rough, very rough "justice." About the militia and who it serves. About the lying bourgeois newspapers and their scare tactics. About who were, and were not, the so-called "friends of labor" from Roosevelt on down. And even about the treachery of the labor skates, particularly the head of the very Teamster Union they were trying to join, Daniel Tobin.What they also learned though, and we can learn as well, is that through combining together in solidarity in large numbers, through being politically clear-headed, through keeping independent of the main political parties, and most of all having the determination to fight for what you want you can win sometimes in this wicked old world. Read this little book and see if you agree.
In rereading this book I was struck by what a wonderful thing it was that these rank and file workers were able to change history by creating, out of their struggle, an example of revolutionary unionism. It was wonderful for them and is wonderful for us, because it shows what we can do today. This book also tells the story of how Farrell Dobbs learned that he could trust in both the fighting capacity of the working class and the leadership capabilities of its vanguard. Through powerful examples Dobbs describes the dog-eat-dog viciousness of capitalism and contrasts it with the desire on the part of young fighters to break through the backstabbing and open up a road to workers' solidarity. I have a 4 & 3 year old who request to read this each night and has the text memorized. On top of learning about weather and science they have really picked up a lot of geography from this and the Tornados! book by this author and are able to point out states, bodies of water & countries. I cannot reccomended this book enough for kids of all ages!
I always love Gail Gibbons! This is a good book that shows how hurricanes can affect us. Good for lower elementary grades.
My 6 year old grandson is fascinated with weather and storms but primarily tornadoes. He has now taken an interest in hurricanes since he lives in an area which has them. I found this book and a few others for his age and my daughter says he likes them a lot.
This is my son's (age 6) second Gail Gibbons weather-themed book. He loves how she describes each category - making it easy to compare the wind speed, storm surge and damage across the categories. The illustrations are excellent and the story is informative. And we both get a kick out of the fact that the author of a hurricane book is Gail. Highly recommend for any child that is fascinated by weather.
This book tells the story about hurricanes in a childs frame of mind. Nothing too scary or frighting. Very simple but true facts on what they are and how they work. Read it to 5 classes of 2nd graders and it sparked class discussion. Wonderful well written book!
Good book for helping kids cope with natural disasters.
My grandson used this for a report. He loved it.
Really helped cement what we were learning about hurricanes.
