This is the most thoughtfully written book I've read in a long time. The author's lyrical writing style and story Telling ability will suck you in to a narrative of a lonesome, important, forgotten branch of American Christian history. They are indeed strangers and at the same time they are all of us who yearn to know we are someone who might matter to God. This book is a well researched history, and a soulful search into the heart of America.
Just what I was looking for on this subject.
Great. The writing itself had a nice rythym to it. I think it captured the Primitive Baptist mindset.
I teach and write in the area of Baptist history, and this is without a doubt one of the best, most well-written, thought-provoking books in the field. I can't remember when I enjoyed a Baptist book this much. Highly recommended for those interested in Baptists, American religious history, the high lonesome sound of bluegrass music, how an apparently archaic religious movement might influence contemporary American culture, or excellent writing.
I must admit that I didn't read the book but I can tell from the descriptive paragraph and the part of the book that I did read (the part that Amazon allows you to view), that I wouldn't like. The reason being, is that it is inaccurate. If you want a book about Primitive Baptists, buy one that a Primitive Baptist wrote. Primitive Baptists are NOT anti-missionary. To be anti-missionary would be anti-Biblical. No, Primitive Baptists were and are against missions BOARDS. Primitive Baptists believe that the Holy Spirit should guide a minister's direction. A board should not. There are Primitive Baptists pastors that have gone on mission trips in the Philippines and other places. We Primitive Baptists are also NOT Calvinists. We descended down from the Anabaptists in England. If you want to read more about our history, read A History of the Welsh Baptists by Joshua Thomas and Jonathan Davis. We differ on the last of the five points in the TULIP doctrine. Calvin came out of the Reformation, Primitive Baptists did not. If you are going to write a history book, please get your history correct.

I didn't feel connected to any of them or really care what happened to them at all. I usually don't mind a slow plot in novels, as long as the characters are well-drawn and engaging. But this book had almost no plot, as well as flat characters, so by the time I got to the end, I didn't care what happened. I had planned to read the whole series, but I'm so glad now I waited to order the other books. I won't be reading more.
This book was a pleasant surprise to me. I was recommended to read this back in college, and I just kept putting it off. I am not sure why, but I did not know what this was truly about and wished I picked it up sooner.I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. I am not a huge fan when stories jump from past to present, but it did not bother me too much in this one. It might have helped that I listened to the audiobook.I figured out the heartbreaking scenes from the beginning, but I still ended up tearing up during the big reveal.Overall, I really enjoyed this and will definitely pick up the next book….especially with that ending.
This book touched my heart . I've read the whole series twelve times already. The pages are filled with passion,sadness,confusion, and loss.The words are written in the perfect way to have your heart pumping and aching for the same kind of love story.You won't find any other book with the same heartwarming kind of writing.This will make your heart melt away making you hold your breath until the and , then leaves you with more emotions. I highly recommend this compassionate book to anyone with a pink heart.I love this book and ill always will.
I read this book after reading Jenny Han's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" which I adored, but this book really flat in comparison to that one. I found it extremely shallow and to be blunt, a fairly boring story. I still finished it sure, because having read another Han novel I thought maybe there was more to come…not so much.Although it was a short, shallow, simple story it took me a few weeks to get through it just because it was dull. Nostalgia factor, eh… character quality… boring…. overall plot? Already asleep thinking about it. The kindle edition has a preview to the next book in this series, which I didn't realize was series quality, but ok I read it anyway and it was still no better than the original.I would not recommend reading this book, although I finished the book it took me awhile and I was never excited to pick it back up, rather I was excited when it was finally over!
I just want to put a disclaimer on this series to let you know if you are thinking of reading it, it will leave you feeling REALLY dissatisfied in the end. You will read all 3 books waiting for the ending that will never come...or it comes in the form of a few pages pretty much as an epilogue. The story you are waiting for and WANT to read about just happens in summary form. It's really frustrating. So be warned!!The first two books they build up one of the characters, making him seem like this amazing guy, even though you know ultimately she is attracted to the other brother. Then she finally gets with the amazing guy and everything is perfect, only for the author to completely destroy the character that you have grown to love. It REALLY made me mad. Then she pushes you to want Belly (I hate her name btw, I don't care if it's just a nickname) to go with the other guy, who in my opinion, never did anything throughout the series to ever make you want to root for as a love interest. I perhaps could have been persuaded to like said guy if them finally getting together wasn't a summary at the VERY END of the last book.But I did read all 3 books so I guess I liked them enough for that. But if I would have known how they ended, I probably wouldn't have started to read them in the first place. It's not a BAD ending, there just isn't enough of what you have (supposedly) been waiting for for THREE books. I need more than just a summary in a few pages at the end. Disappointing for sure.
I'm sorry to say I did not love this book. I gave it two stars because I did finish reading it. Otherwise I would have given it one star. The main character is so amazingly self absorbed and there is such a lack of communication between everyone. No growth in the characters….. I just kept reading thinking it was going to get better and things were going to be worked out. Or that it was going to get better and it just didn't. I just don't love books that go that route.
I loved the characters in this book and the sweetness that is Belly Fisher. I loved the descriptions of the summer house and the days that never wanted to end. I just wish it wouldn't have ending so abruptly. It's like the editor sliced it in the wrong spot or something and just wants us to read the next books. Well, I would've read them anyway, but I like my endings a little sweeter.
So I thought this was going to be so lighthearted and cutesy and then boom! It gets so real and heartbreaking and yet so beautiful. Jenny Han’s writing is impeccable and the storyline superb. And I have to note, being a Virginia girl, having my favorite rollercoaster mentioned just makes me love this author so much!

I only have one major complaint.The final section, the equipment packs, has a lot of good. However, some of the packs are just one item, which kind of defeats the entire point of packaging things together. It's especially noticeable with the Skillwires. If your "everything you need in one" pack includes a sub-header of "Requires Skilljack", you might be doing it wrong.Still, this is a minor gripe. I cannot recommend this book enough if you're serious about your Shadowrun.
This is the leather edition. It's beautiful. Binding appears to be stitched instead of glued like the standard hardcover edition, which are widely criticized for coming apart even with very light use. I'm hoping for better performance out of the leather bound editions.The content appears identical to the standard edition. Heavy, high quality paper in full color. The art is very nice. This book has an image embossed on the leather cover (an ouroboros), and the title is in gold. On the back cover is the Shadowrun logo in gold.The edges are NOT guilded in gold.It is NOT numbered. (The leather bound Core Rulebook is supposed to be numbered -- only 1000 made-- and has guilded edges. These do not.)Side note, the leather-bound Run & Gun i got has a glued binding just like the low rate standard hardcover, so don't assume all of the leather bound editions will be better quality or longer lasting. Catalyst books are notoriously overpriced and underbuilt. Great art, crappy binding. Once upon a time, you could get a sturdy RPG book and use it constantly for 20 years. Now-a-days, you pay $50 and get glued bindings that rips free with the second use. It's sad. At least for the most part, these leather editions are generally better quality and should hold up to regular use. If you can pick one up for around $50, and it will outlast the standard edition by a long shot, I recommend picking up these.Leather editions I've gotten with stitched bindings include: Run Faster, Data Trails, Rigger 5.0, Howling Shadows.
Like my Run & Gun review: I dropped a star not because of content, but because of failures with quality control on the printers side. Book has a few mis cuts on pages, extra folded in page length thats obviously not intended to be there. More little slices take out of pages randomly. These are clear manufacturer defects, that were still shipped out. Overall it was much better QA than say the Run & Gun book I received, but Catalyst definitely needs to talk to their printer, and refuse to accept sub-par prints. When I drop 40-60 on a book, I don't want it to be beat up before I even get it.As for the content:Tons of meta variants, including a human metavariant? really?, alternate character creation methods, although I personally prefer the reintroduction of the old priority system.Gear packages that have karma or nuyen cost. Which I believe is technically part of another creation system, but its done well enough that it can slide into the others kind of like gear qualities or the older "corp suites".Lots more stuff. (other reviews break it down better)Its definitely a book worth buying despite the physical printing QA problems.All in all, if you're going to buy 1 addition to SR 5 E, make it this one.
Great info for Shadowwrun 5e and detailed info, but poorly organized. Hard to find anything when I really need to.
This is the character creation supplimental all fans of the previous editions of shadowrun were waiting for. There are new (old) Qualities, like Spirit Whisperer and In Debt, alternate creation styles like the INFAMOUS Build Point system, and a whole lot of new metatypes that we all have been fans of for years, like Minotaurs, Sasquatches and Pixies.This book also contains additions for lifestyles (things like gyms and bars nearby), standard shadowrunner packs for players unsure what to buy, and all the contacts one could ever want to run into.It is definitely worth buying if you are a GM. For players, it's a lot of fun and helps to create characters with fulfilling backstories, but I find this much more beneficial from a GM standpoint.
