About the Author
John Boston is Director of the Prisoners' Rights Project of the New York City Legal Aid Society. Mr. Boston received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law. He began his career as a research coordinator for The Defender Project of the Twentieth Century Fund in New York City. He has also contributed research and writing concerning prison population issues for the Correctional Association of New York and began his tenure as the Legal Aid Society as a staff attorney. Mr. Boston is widely published, with numerous articles on prisoners, their rights and circumstances nationwide, and has litigated several cases pertaining to prisoner's rights. He also participated in a national working group with the ACLU in response to the Prison Litigation Reform Act, reviewing briefs and pleadings, consulting with prisoner advocates, preparing CLE and practice materials. He is on the faculty of the Practicing Law Institute and co-administrator of the Prisoners' Rights section of the website www.probono.com. Daniel E. Manville is an attorney specializing in civil rights litigation. Mr. Manville has a Bachelor in Science from Central Michigan University (1976); a Bachelor Degree in General Studies from Wayne State University (1976); a Juris Doctorate from Antioch School of Law (now University of District of Columbia Law School) (1981); a Master in Criminal Justice, Michigan State University (1985). From 1988 through 2003, he was in private practice concentrating on providing representation to prisoners. From 2003 to summer of 2007, Manville was the Clinical Staff Attorney for Wayne State University Civil Rights Litigation Clinic. During 2007 and 2008 academic year, Manville was a Visiting Professor at University of Denver Law School Civil Rights Clinic. He is also an author and co-author of a number of self-help litigation manuals for prisoners; a number of articles on rights of prisoners; and co-author of A Prisoner's Rights, 2005 Annual Survey of Michigan Law, 2005 Wayne Law Review.

I sent this to someone who is, currently, incarcerated in jail. The contents of this book has saved his life. He was denied medical treatment. Yet, he pressed on, educating the authorities of his civil rights, while referencing this book. He was able to manuever through the system for appropriate medical treatment. An emergent procedure was performed at a neighboring hospital in the nick of time.
I gave this as a gift to a friend who is in prison. He told me it was extremely helpful

In spite of the books title it is NOT just for prisoners, it is for everyone who wants a deep, technical and enhancing understanding of practicing American Civil Law. However the accent is on the Prisons, Prisoners, Constitutional Rights in Prison and it is tailored to bring this knowledge to them. This is the Fourth Edition and it just gets better and better each revision. We owe a debt to Boston and Manville. This book is not a replacement for Hertz and Liebman Habeas Corpus or such similar treatise.This is not a Habeas Corpus book. However the knowledge and skills in this Boston and Manville can help with any type of litigation, including post conviction remedies. It is very hard to explain to someone who has not been in prison how different life is from that of a free man. One of the extraordinary features of prison life is the loss of freedoms and rights we so take for granted that our mind does not even reflect upon them when free. Just the simple act of going for a cup of coffee, real coffee or making your own drink, calling someone to whom you wish to speak, learning what you need to learn, sleeping when you are tired, getting medicine when you are sick, being in a quiet place, or having some semblance of safety, all of this is very, very different in prison. Of course you know that, don’t you? The details of everyday life stripped away. That is the purpose of prison, to change your life. NOW, compound that with unquestioned fact that prisoners still have Constitutional Rights and ask what those rights are and how to enforce them. Consider the right of a prisoner to not have his Constitutional Rights while a Prisoner, violated, and you have many of the subjects covered in this book. It is the right of a guilty man to only be punished according to law. It can also aid an innocent man in understanding basic skills of law to further his search for freedom. You are in prison and you may be like so many, many others who have been there, You are all alone. Perhaps no one will help you either to get out or to survive as a human being in a cage but who one day may be freed. Few people want to keep an innocent man in prison and I would hope that few of us want to punish a guilty man except according to what the law allows. Well, welcome to Law School. We are unusual and very lucky here in America, that we actually have a legal system that is capable of enforcing the law for all citizens and if you can try to understand that being a prisoner does not take away your rights as an American that will go a long way to understanding the relationship between the imprisoned and the Courts. That is the role of this Boston and Manville book. Books such as this and there are many others (but this is one of the best), can actually allow you to reach out of the prison walls and grab Justice. A little bit of Justice can enter your Prison and go to you and those you may wish to aid. Manville and Boston have written this volume for those who are willing to accept the academic challenge that dedication to learning and study can have the practical result of protection of the imprisoned. In my opinion this book is equally valuable to those not in prison in that the fundamental legal knowledge you will acquire by study can only enhance and protect your life and that of your family regardless of which side of the bars you are on. So, we have this wonderful one volume treatise of practically one thousand pages, which can take a helpless imprisoned man or a legally ignorant free man and give him a powerful ability to see Justice. This book does not cover everything. A normal law library for those who still love books can easily consist of 500 to 1000 volumes or more, depending on whether you want law reports etc. Most people also need on line data base access for case law and other knowledge. But what Manville and Boston have done is to create an extremely well written, clear, detailed, thorough encapsulation of the law that should be read by every American. In spite of its title it is NOT just for prisoners, it is for everyone who wants a deep, technical and enhancing understanding of American Law. This volume covers such legal topics as State Law Claims in Federal Court, Personal Safety in Prison, Religious Practice in Prison, Overview of the Legal System, Basic Legal Skills so that you can actually litigate a case, Section 1983 Actions, Preparation of your case for Court, Legal Research, Legal Writing, Motion Practice, Torts and on and on and on. The book contains far more than a short review like this can justify and unfortunately far more than many attorney may know. If you believe that the Law is the possession of every man and it is your responsibility to learn the academic and practical skills necessary to exercise the legal rights available to you as an American, then this book is for you. If you are an attorney who knows the tragic deficits of law school and wants to correct some of them, you should also buy this book. Whoever you are, you will practice law better than before. It is well annotated and covers just about any issue you might encounter. Damian Brindle produced the excellent Drive Safely book. It is written in succinct clear plain language and should be read by all drivers, especially young inexperienced drivers. Parents should give this book to every teen with a learner permit. It should be handed out in every drivers ed class for those of any age. Importantly Mr. Brindle covers distracted driving beyond just the warnings about cellphone use. I also liked the advice he gave about making all the adjustments to mirrors, A/C, radio, seats before a driver gets underway. Throughout the book Mr. Brindle provides hyperlinks to sources for statistics, as well as useful references, products and other survival/safety books. As a former EMT and Outdoor Emergency Care instructor, I have made it a habit to have emergency first aid supplies in my vehicles and the gloves I keep are high temperature resistant types. Mr Brindle has excellent advice.
Everyone needs a reminder, so this book is suitable for experienced drivers that need to be reminded of some rules of the road and driving techniques they have forgotten. And it's excellent for learning drivers, of course.

There are many things to commend about this book.First and foremost, this is the first major and successful attempt to present analytic techniques to marketing researchers from a modern perspective. It replaces the standard multivariate technique books used by marketing researchers (starting with Paul Green in the 1970s and ending with the currently in print Hair, Tatham et al.). There are some excellent contemporary books on analytics relevant to marketing researchers such as "An Introduction to Statistical Learning" by James, Witten, Hastie and Tibshirani, and "Applied Predictive Modeling" by Kuhn and Johnson. However, they are not directly designed to address marketing research issues. This book is. The advantage to this book being specific is that it can address the problems specific to marketing researchers rather than dealing with such issues tangentially.Second, Chapman and Feit do not deal with marketing research problems from an academic perspective with artificial scenarios. Their examples are of the type a marketing researcher would deal with on a day-to-day basis. When I first saw that the authors use generated data as opposed to real-life data to illustrate the techniques, I had misgivings. It is easy enough to create contrived datasets to solve imagined problems; in real life, datasets are not always that cooperative. The authors have not fallen into this trap and they have generated datasets skillfully to illustrate the points they are trying to make.Third, as a modern take on traditional bivariate and multivariate techniques, Chapman and Feit present Bayesian methods, which are becoming increasingly popular. I believe Bayesian methods (especially with the advent of R) will soon be part of mainstream data analysis in marketing research. The book includes sections on many relatively newer (in any case, less frequently used) techniques such as random forest and naïve Bayes.Fourth, in several places Chapman and Feit explore the implications and extensions of basic techniques, which I have not found in other comparable texts. As an example, while discussing factor analysis, they discuss how to use factor analysis to create perceptual maps.. Such extensions are seldom discussed explicitly in other texts dealing with factor analysis.Fifth, the book is comprehensive. It covers all aspects of analysis a beginning or intermediate marketing researcher or analyst is likely to encounter. Although initially I wondered if it was necessary to devote a third of the book to basic statistics and R, it does provide a good foundation for data manipulation.Sixth, the writing is clear. This is not a technical book and it is not meant to be. This makes the book widely accessible to marketing researchers with different proficiencies in mathematics. I also liked the fact that Chapman and Feit point out the limitations of traditional techniques like confidence intervals.Finally, the authors do a good job of teaching the R language and graphics to beginners. The book is not unique in that respect because many other books do an equally good job when it comes to teaching R and graphics.Some standard techniques (neither numerous, nor serious) are missing from this book. A case in point is linear discriminant analysis. While logistic regression (which is included in the book) can be seen as an alternative to LDA, there are several instances where LDA is a better alternative. Other missing topics include correspondence analysis and maxdiff. But it is the authors’ prerogative to choose what goes into their book and Chapman and Feit’s coverage is comprehensive enough for most purposes.While the authors do indirectly bring up validation issues and deal with them, they do not treat validation as a systematic and explicit part of using any technique. They devote less than a single page to the widespread problem of overfitting and touch upon bootstrapping only minimally while discussing PLS/SEM. I am not sure if they discuss bias-variance tradeoff and cross-validation seriously at all. I believe, as we move into the era of big data, samples drawn from an unknown population, do-it-yourself research and the like, validation issues become critical and they should be a part of any analyst’s thinking. Most users of the techniques know much more about “R-squared†and “number of hits†etc., than about the perils of overfitting, about model bias or about the reproducibility of the results. For many decades we had no alternative. Programming was complicated, datasets were small and computer time was expensive. Now we don’t have any of these limitations and I believe validating results should not be optional or an afterthought but an integral part of data analysis.Despite the title, which emphasizes R, the book is more about data analysis and analytics. "Data Analysis and Analytics for Marketing Research With R" would have been a more appropriate title for this book. The book has a lot to teach about analysis whether you are interested in R or not.While I wish the book had dealt more systematically with validation issues, what it does it does well. Beginning and intermediate researchers who need to analyze data will be hard put to find a better source than this book; learning R in the process is a big bonus. I highly recommend this book to beginning and intermediate researchers seriously interested in data analysis and analytic techniques.

This was a gift for my wife and she loves it. I had a few peeks inside that turned to lengthy sessions of page-turning. It's a very detailed atlas; my wife says sometimes too detailed. It has already come in handy for Tuesday trivia night at the bar.
1-9-2013A favorite hobby is looking at maps to locate "stuff" and this atlas seems to have all I could want, plus. Nice clear maps, easy on near sighted eyes. The other information creates a better understanding of different locations The rating should be a 4 and 7/8ths as my only caveat entails a bit more road map type detail for me, i.e. showing major highways. However, I love Googling (sp?) directions down to the site pictures from Google Maps so expecting this from a print atlas is unrealistic. Therefore, I am quite happy with the volume and it will give me much pleasure and knowledge.
Bought as a gift, my husband loved it!

Another very well written and entertaining Thousand Island Doggy Inn Mysteries. The characters have matured as the series continues, but they haven't lost their enjoyable interaction. I especially like how the author educates me on a variety of subjects. This book highlighted the publishing industry and mental illness. He treats both subjects with respect. I look forward to the next book and preorder it. The books in this series can stand alone, however, I enjoy reading each one as it's available.
This is one of my favorite series of books. I love dogs and these books have them as the base of the stories. The characters are like friends you keep in touch with by reading the next book. I hope they continue to keep coming.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, from A through V so far, but the recent books are even better than the early one, which is amazing considering how good the first ones were and how fast the books are coming out. One of my other favorite authors appears as a lead character in this book too, as a mystery writer who helps solve a real-life mystery in another mystery writer's book.
Loved the characters and the storyline. How many suspects make a bunch? How many make too many? The core characters are still witty and interesting. I want more!
As a devout dog lover, I have loved every book in the Thousand Island Dog series. The information about each breed has been great as I was not familiar with some of them. Now that I am older, I prefer cozy mysteries. Mr Snow's books are among my very favorites. Please keep the the dogs coming!
