This is one of my favorite books. It is about a witch who turns a mother's children into food while they are out. The mother must know what child is what food in order to turn them back. It's not scary....more magical. Audrey Wood is such a wonderful writer. Don Wood writes similar books. They are so vidid that they almost look real. I loved this book and it will be a treasure to save forever. My children now in their 30's are reading it to their young children. It does not have to be a Halloween book. I would suggest 3 years and up.
Okay- so I was nervous about buying this book for my 3 year old because of the reviews that said the book is scary. It is not. Lol not in my opinion and not in my toddlers opinion either. This book is a fairy tale, super fun, sort of dark, easy and fun to read (and my son loves my heckedy peg voice) and it has amazing illustrations. Very beautiful. My son frequently walks around the house now saying "come on sweet chickens!" Haha which is a phrase heckedy peg says. After Christmas we read this every night for at least a month. Great book! Such a relief from the old happy go lucky standard toddler rhyming books. Blah I get tired of those- but this I could read over and over. I was so happy my son loves it, and I really don't think it's as "dark" as everyone makes it out to be- great buy!
AMAZING book! I only remember a handful of books from my childhood and this is one of them. The children are named after the days of the week (kids get practice hearing them, older children can predict what the rest of the children are named). Spoiler alert- the witch turns them into different foods and the mom has to correctlyguess which one is each child. Easy to make interactive with a child and have them help guess which food is which child.The illustrations are so beautiful and moving! Each one is a work of art. You can read it multiple times and still discover new details in the artwork.A few people said their book arrived damaged. Mine arrived in perfect condition. No issues for me!Love it!
This was one of my favorite books when I was a very young girl, to this day it is still one of my favorites. I bought this so I could pass it on to my kids. I adore the determination of a mothers love to get her kids back from the wicked witch. The paintings in this book was one of the main reasons why I have an extreme love for oil based paintings. I also bought the book "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" the same time and it is just as amazing as Heckedy Peg. I just wish I could of bought Heckedy Peg in Hardcopy as I did with "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub." I bought the book in paperback and sadly it looked used and not brand new. I had to take a star off because of that but other than that the book itself is just wonderful.
I loved this book as a child and once i had my own - it was a must purchase. I realized that once I ordered, I still had my copy but I'm grateful to have two copies. The story is about love of a mother and knowing her children. It's fun and not scary and I just love it. It's a classic in my home.
Loved this book as a child, bought it here to share with my 6 year old son and his entire kindergarten class. He (and they) were just as enchanted as I remember being, and afterward, all enjoyed imitating Heckedy Peg's voice and hobbling around on their "peg" legs.
The story is great, but my copy is falling apart at the seams, has rips, places are taped, and there is writing throughout. How they thought this was in sellable condition, I will never know. Love the story, but my copy is a joke.
This book was purchased for a grandchild and was a book I had purchased and read to my children when they were young. I bought the book origionally for the beautiful illustrations; but it is also a very good fairy tale. The mother in the story knows and loves her children and is able at the end of the story to turn everything about because she knows them so well. My youngest daughter, who has two children of her own said that this was a book that I should make sure each of my married adult children had for their children. So I will need to purchase two more before the year is out. This was a much loved book when ours were young and for the grandchildren that have it it is proving to be special for them too.

It's a good book for people who need some quick (mostly informal) phrases when they go to a French-speaking area. Not so good for formally learning French.
This book is a compact reference for many simple syntactical patterns and much usage that would be very useful for a visitor to France. It cannot of itself instill habits of vocalization, of course, but as a supplement to a program of practice it could add a lot of support to a student's foundation. I don't think the book can be the sole basis for such a program, but it can become a good friend to someone trying to acquire spoken French. Yes, it fills a need.

This short book is a well written tight narrative that kept me reading, not putting down the book, until I had reached the end. The story, which actually happened to a sailor of the Columbian navy, was serialized in a newspaper in Columbia for which Marquez worked. The story had already been reported in the news when Marquez began to serialize the narrative, going into much detail as the storyline takes the viewpoint of the shipwrecked sailor himself. The story is a testament to luck and determination, making the most of opportunity in the struggle to survive. However, it is also an excellent example of Marquez’s ability to focus on the narrative thread as the armature which holds the entire composition together. I finished the book in 4 hours and I think most readers would find this to be a great reading experience.
Marquez's breakthrough book that made his career. Written in a clear, journalistic style, the book is a quick, riveting read about a sailor surviving a shipwreck in the Caribbean Sea. A good introduction to Marquez for youth. As a surfer, I loved the story of life on the open sea.
As an old destroyer sailor who lost 15 shipmates to an unexpected confluence of two was e systems, I found the story fascinating. I did not go overboard but I relived how those who died must have felt and suffered.
This is probably my least favorite GGM book. It lacks the rich and raw descriptors that his works normally have. I do realize that this book is a somewhat fictionalized retelling of a soldier's real experiences, and as such, naturally reads differently. However this book this not grip me the way GGM's works normally do, I was not held captive by curiosity until the final pages. It was simply something I read.
I enjoy shot reads with substances. This is a great novel of heroism through survival. It is a must read. Grammar is also impressive.
Read this book in 3 days. Very interesting keep my interest n hard to put down. I found myself in his raft watching this sailor.
A quick read - This story is told in painstaking detail, and one has to admire the recall of the narrator as he recounts the circumstances of the shipwreck, the ensuing 10 days at sea and his ultimate rescue. I was able to feel the roller coaster of hope and despair experienced by narrator, the joys, surges of adrenaline, anger and frustration, determination and resignation.This book had me on the edge of my seat, but mainly because of the preface by the author - The Story of the Story. The story certainly could have stood alone when first written in a series of newspaper articles, later in book form, because the story was still in the recent collective memory of Columbians. However, if I picked up a copy without the background provided by Garcia Marquez - as some of my book club friends did -I would have been lost and frustrated, left wanting more information. The Story of the Story preface gives a depth and completion to the story of the shipwrecked sailor, makes it all the more interesting. Make sure you buy a copy that includes the preface.
Although I'm not usually a fan of this author, this book was fascinating. I read it first in Spanish and liked it so much I got it in English for my book club. It's a day by day account of a shipwreck survivor of his experiences as told to the author. The book is short, the writing clear and explicit, and the descriptions so real, the reader feels as if he/she were there.

P. really shows that all prayer is heard instantly & all heaven gets to work on it. All heaven means both God & Satan. God responds to answer & Satan goes to work to keep answers from being delivered. But Jesus promised that all prayers given in His Name will be answered if we trust Him to deliver. He uses the example of Daniel as an example. Daniel prayed & fasted 21 days before his answer was given. When the angel arrived to deliver the answer he told Daniel how the minute that his prayer was given, they heard & began to answer. Michael sent an angel with the answer but the angel had to pass thru Satan's heaven to get here.The angel was having such a hard time that Michael, who protects Israel in the heavenlies, came in person to assist. I know people who are demon harassed now & they say that the demons are afraid of Michael. I believe that Michael probably always sends enough angel warriors to get thru faster now because the demons show a lot of fear when Michael is called on. Do not doubt, all prayer is heard instantly & every prayer is answered in God's time. Some of my answers that came slowly, I realized why when I learned a few very important facts about the situations during the wait. I was glad that it took more time.

I love all Derek Prince books. This one has really helped me understand the importance of prayer and how to pray. Since my dad died I felt like my prayers weren't being answered like God had given up on me but this book has taught me just the opposite.

Hello soon-to-be GRE test takers,This 5 lb GRE book was the only non-ETS material I used to study for the GRE. However, I've glossed through other Kaplan/Princeton/Etc GRE books and have to say that this book is one of the best study materials you can get. The book is big, and I did not finish all the questions, partly because the questions seem to all look the same after awhile (this is a good thing!) and partly because I was lazy (this is a less good thing). I scored a 325, and the questions I mostly got wrong were in the vocabulary section and because of timing, because I didn't feel like studying vocab, and because I only timed myself on a practice test once.In my opinion, the questions in this book are generally tougher than what I had on the actual GRE (aside from vocab, as vocab is basically just vocab either way). So here is what I would do:1. I would go through at least 1 of each section in this book - READ THROUGH THE EXPLANATIONS OF WHAT YOU GOT WRONG.2. Then take the first ETS free practice test (download PowerPrep II onto your computer if you have one, otherwise I believe they have a paper version as well)3. Then look over your score (ETS doesn't give you explanations, so you'll have to go by your score and intuition to see what you didn't understand)4. Do the rest/as much as possible left of the sections in this book. If you can't finish all of them, at least do the sections that you struggled most on.5. Then take the second ETS free practice test.6. Then do vocabulary. This book is similar to all other GRE books in the way they attack vocab (basically try to get you to memorize as many words as possible). This works for some people, but it takes a long time, and quite often seems counterproductive if you won't remember the words after the test anyway. If you have the time and means, what I suggest to do is to read news editorials and opinionated articles and look up the words you don't know. This way, you really get the context of the word not only in the sentence, but also from the article and content itself. It is surprising how many words you've read and glossed over, thinking you knew what it meant, only to realize that you were completely wrong.I hope this review is helpful to you stressed-out students and/or nontraditional GRE takers! I've taken the GRE twice, two years apart.First time around - studied from ETS, Princeton Review and Kaplan. I did alright. The practice material from PR and Kaplan isn't the same level of rigor as the ETS exam, and ETS's book has a limited number of practice problems. So I did a lot of practice, but it didn't prepare me for the more difficult math and reading sections later in the test. My 2nd sections increased in difficulty and I was overwhelmed.Second time, two years later - Started with Kaplan and Princeton Review, but again was feeling underprepared. A friend recommended the 5lb Manhattan Prep book to me. GAME. CHANGER. I wish I had known about this book with more time before taking the GRE again, I probably would have also invested in some of Manhattan Prep's other study material for the quantitative section. A large part of taking standardized tests is getting a feel for the test, which only comes from lots of practice. This book gives you:-- a ton of practice, at the right level of difficulty. 500+ pages of just math practice and explanations (nevermind all of the reading and essay practice in this beast of a book)-- 30-50 practice questions for EACH topic. I found this really helpful because it allowed me to see the nuances between different kinds of probability or triangle questions, etc. At the end there are mixed sections to tie it all together, plus a section of advanced quantitative questions if you've mastered everything else.--AWESOME answer explanations. They're thorough, often detailing alternate approaches - different perspectives are really useful if you don't understand something the first time around.I'm so happy with how this book prepared me, and much happier with my score the second time around. I agree with other reviewers that ETS is still the best practice material, but this is definitely the second best book you can buy to prepare yourself. I've never felt compelled to write a review for anything until now. Buy this book buy this book, even if you only have a few weeks of studying left, it's worth it.(Side note - nothing to do with the book, but I used Magoosh's vocab app, that was also useful)
Excellent book. I took the GRE last week and scored 327. Much of the credit for that score will go to this book and the 6 Manhattan tests (more difficult than the real GRE!) that I took.The book has sections for each concept tested in the GRE and enough practice problems in each section that you can master both the concept as well as the question types on that concept that might appear in the GRE.For the concepts that I needed to learn from scratch, such as probability and combinatorics, the Khan academy lectures were perfect.Overall, this book helped me build speed, accuracy and confidence for the quant as well as verbal section.I recommend buying one of the strategy guides so that you can access the 6 online, full length practice tests. Buying them for Manhattan prep on their own costs $30 but each strategy guide costs only about $14 on Amazon.

I belong to a Young Adult book group (I'm just about to turn 50 but I still love reading kid lit and YA novels... good ones). And this is a GREAT one. My friend who has a 14 year old daughter told me about this book so I looked into it. Love that it's a memoir. Love the theme and I wish I had this book when I was in school. I suggested it to our book group and we decided to all read it. I thought I'd read it and pass it along to my friend's daughter, but I think I'll have to keep it. I'll definitely would enjoy reading it again. I'll buy another copy to give to my friend's daughter. Again, I can't tell you how delighted I am with the whole thing. Her awesomely supportive family, the whole idea of how she followed Betty's 1950's book to the letter (vaseline on the eyelids and wearing panty girdles! Who knew they still even made panty girdles!), and Maya's utter bravery. Wow. I could not have done that at her age. I'm not sure I could do it now. What I didn't realize when I first heard about the book is that she told no one that's what she was doing, following the advice of this 1950's book. No one except her family knew, not even her best friend Kenzie. Where it REALLY got me was the month of April's theme: "A Popular Attitude". And then everything starts tying together. It's a wonderful lesson for anyone at any age. No spoilers here (that's a pet peeve of mine) but you will NOT be disappointed. I am so thrilled for Maya. It was a wonderful read. And such a satisfying ending. There's not one little thing I didn't adore. Can't wait for the movie. Also, kudus go out to whoever designed and illustrated the book cover. Love. Love. Love.
My 11yo 6th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review:--- "Maya is an unpopular girl finishing her 8th grade year with an interesting experiment. She is reading "Betty Cornell's Teenage Popularity Guide", a book from the 1950s. She's hoping the experiment will help her find confidence and discover the true meaning of popularity. As a middle-schooler myself this was a fun book and it teaches some important lessons. Some of the things she does are so funny, especially compared to how we are now. It is emotional and was written very well, I felt like I could relate to Maya. It remind me of a realistic Dork Diaries, with Maya's honesty and silliness. I think it is a great book for all Middle School girls to read!"
I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book, but it wasn’t this. I liked that Maya’s personality was entirely present, and that we were able to learn so much about her simply by learning of her decision to start the experiment. I liked her family, and a few of the other characters, and I liked that that we had interactions and scenes that didn’t seem to relate with the experiment, but in the end they all were part of Maya’s final realizations. The story felt a little repetitive at times, and I had this feeling from the writing that I was reading a fictionalized version of what happened, even though deep down I know I wasn’t. So maybe that’s really a positive thing. But overall it was simply a good book, and I’m glad I read it.
I rarely give a book 5 stars, so when I do it must be good. Popular by Maya van Wagenen was like a non- annoying reality tv series- it had a diverse amount of emotions and the people could be seen changing over time. The one thing I disliked, however ,was that it had that often used, changed mindset ending. At the end, Maya says she now knows that popularity isn't" clothes, hair, or even possessions. When we let go of these labels we see how flimsy and relative they actually are. Real popularity is kindness and acceptance. It is about who you are, and how you treat others." That was a beautiful set of sentences, but I'm sorry that's just not how it works, as much as we like to believe it is. In my school especially, an I'm sure in other schools, the popular people AREN'T nice and DO have fancy possessions. In the end, I applaud Maya's willingness to try this insane experience and open herself up to new things, because it's extremely hard. "Popular" is a book that resonates with so many people going through the unfair popularity trials of MS , including myself. Her humorous wit also made me connect to her even more, and made the book enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book for anyone in middle school/ early HS, especially someone going through the whole "why does it seem like nobody likes me" and " Why does popularity seem based on such fickle things" phase. A great, non fiction, easy to connect to, book."This is the time to remember that I'm the protagonist in my own story, facing every challenge with grace and wit."
I liked Maya's style of writing and thought she was a pretty talented and ambitious young woman. I related with her story quite a lot. The part where she writes on the bathroom wall, "remember the girl in pearls" I thought was a little self-absorbed though. Sure she made outcasts feel more involved and worked hard at getting to know all kinds of people and that is definitely brave. It's just her friend wrote, "So and So BFFE" and she writes, "Remember ME"…kind of put me off. I feel bad though, Maya is young and I know she didn't mean it like that and I am possibly thinking out of line but still. The things Maya did do was ambitious and inspiring and I thought it was very neat that a 13 year old would be thinking of a writing career already. Her relationship with her writing teacher was also very special and I really liked her family dynamic. I was definitely not as brave as her when I was 13! All in all it was an entertaining read and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Van Wagenen
