I am ashamed to have been so foolish as to buy this book. This went way beyond dark. I hope the author was trying to shock us with the evil in Simon`s heart. I have absolutely no sympathy for "Kitty" either. She is a weak, whiny, pathetic excuse for a woman and mother. The atttitude of "OMG-I have to go work with the uneducated lowlife cashiers" is stereotypical and insulting. Considering how many bottles of wine she consumed while so desperate for cash, she should have been working at Trader Joe's so she could stock up on Two Buck Chuck.
I didn't read any reviews of this novel, but I wish I had. Maybe the reviews would have given me an indication that this book wasn't for me. Don't get me wrong, my rating isn't based on the writing--the writing was excellent. It's just that I was expecting a novel that would take me away from every day sadness; one that would give me a good mystery to solve. Instead, chapter after chapter, I sank deeper into the quicksand of dark emotions. I kept turning the pages, but it wasn't just because I wanted to see how it would end--it was more because I just wanted it to end! Consider the worst things that could happen to a person, and I promise you will find them in this novel. If you are in the mood to wallow in the muck of a soap opera, then read on! This book is for you! If you'd rather solve a mystery, you should probably should look elsewhere.
I did not enjoy either the structure or content of this book, and wish I had read some of the negative reviews earlier. Marrs is just competent enough as a writer to keep me going well past the threshold of my distaste, until about halfway through I gave up the ghost and sought out a synopsis, just to find out what finally happened without having to continue reading the book. The synopsis described a plot that was as ugly as any I've seen. The two things I disliked the most:(1) The structure is an exhausting back-and-forth device between 25 years earlier and the present time. Once or twice in a book is fine and can lead to some good story-telling. But if it is alternating chapters in a fairly long book, it's just tiresome, not giving the reader an opportunity to stay involved in the story line before yanking them out into the other time period. Lather, rinse, repeat.(2) And it would be important in a story like this to keep the reader engaged, since both protagonists are deeply unlikeable. The abandoned wife is marginally more interesting, as it's one of those women who finally tell themselves to get on with it, and descriptions of how she does just that are engaging to a point, finally a little boring, but at least it's a forward & positive momentum. The husband is nothing but a psychopathic creep with no redeeming qualities whatsoever (see: Aristotle's 'Poetics'). Both he and the wife are also written as people with very little internal emotional logic even in their own terms. (I can't explain why because it would involve spoilers, although I feel that sprinkling spoilers around would actually be a blessing if it keeps people away from this nasty story).I'm both glad & sorry that I sought out a synopsis rather than just abandoning the book altogether. Now I have ugly images and scenes in my mind that I'd just as soon not have.
This book left me breathless! The story it contains is a masterpiece...a modern day classic. Every word on every page held me transfixed, completely immersed in a tale like no other I've read. The writing style, descriptions, depth of characters, startling revelations throughout- all ilmpeccable. Even typos were absent until last leg, even then only 2 or 3.It was a wonderful rollercoaster ride & will carry you from the heights of joy & euphoria the depths of agony & despair and then back again. This is a tragedy of epic proportion, intensifying as it barreled along w/out missing a beat. Even the ending is perfect., it ends exactly where it should. Doesn't leave you wanting more because there is no more. This book transcends all but a few books I've ever read and I would give it 10 stars if I could.Do NOT pass up this book! You won't be disappointed, you'll be enthralled & amazed and most of all you'll be glad you read it.
I both liked and hated this book for so many reasons.I liked how it kept my interest and we were allowed to delve into each character's past. I also liked that it kept me wanting to continue to read and finish. All of the book flowed well.I disliked Simon to the core. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about him at all. I was also confused by him not trusting his wife and immediately assuming the worst of her after he had known her since childhood. And given the situation, what spouse wouldn't bust in and find out what is going on? And while we find an ailment Simon has at the end, I wondered if there was also mental illness or a personality disorder. What I found completely unforgivable, and was when I almost put the book away, was the revelation of what he allowed to happen to his son.I was completely neutral on Catherine for the majority of the book.Overall I thought this was a decent book but it really wasn't a psychological thriller.
When I started this book, I did not think I would like it but by the end I really liked this book. The story was unlike any other I had read before. The characters were layered and it was enjoyable as the story switched between his story and her story and between their past together and their current lives. It was interesting to see how the characters' up-bringing affected their decision making, their future paths, and their view of themselves and the people in their lives. I think it was one of the most enjoyable book I have read lately. I recommend it.
