I started this book some years back, and left it after the first few pages. Years later, at the prompting of a friend I tried it again. I'm glad I did.This book offers a rare glimpse into life from the early 1900's America through the late 1970's through the eyes of the daughter of one of the pioneers of American Jewry.The subject of the book, was frequented by the greatest rabbis of the time - men such as Rabbi Boruch Ber and Rabbi Reuben Grozovsky. His daughter writes about her life in Mir, Poland before and after the war.The stories of their lives, combined with the experiences with some of the great Jewish luminaries of recent years makes for a moving and enjoyable read.
All for the Boss offers a rare gimps into the world of a tzadik. How he ate, slept, raised his children, related to his parents, chose a wife and more. The choices he made are nothing less than awe inspiring. A friend lent me her book and before I was done reading it, I resolved to buy my own copy in order to lend it out to as many people as possible. It has left such an impression on me that I can plainly say that there has been many a time that I stop and ask myself "is this what R' Yaakov Yosef Herman would do?" If I could narrow down which books have had the most impact on my life, this would be at the top 5. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Great coffee table book. I really enjoyed all the photos. Some space in the book could be better utilized. There are some pages almost completely blank except for a very small picture. Overall great book.

The book has the most amazing photographs that truly celebrate the Earth. I would highly recommend this work of art. It's spectacular and I'm certainly glad I purchased it.
Edmaier takes us to a variety of isolated and relatively unpopulated areas for some terrific aerial photos of our planet. We see water, ice, tundra, glaciers, sandy deserts, volcanoes, coasts, grassland, and forests. And Jung-Huettl's descriptions of what we are seeing are nicely done.The overall effect is eerie, as if the Earth were uninhabited (by our species, at least) and we humans were looking the place over and trying to decide if we wanted to visit it, live there, or try someplace else.In any case, the photographs are marvellous and show plenty of detail. If I were writing a book on planetary science, I'd want to use a couple of these photos for the section on our little world.
The photographs are stunning but it's not worth buying the postcard version of these if your intent is to USE them as postcards. This is because these (as well as many other postcards from this publisher) are the non-standard size of 6" x 6". They cannot be handled as normal postcards by the USPS and cost more than a first-class envelope to send and will have to be sorted and processed by hand rather than by machine. If you're only looking for small cardstock version of the images this is a fine choice.
This is a book that one must see to truly appreciate. I came across it in a store and began to browse because it looked as though it was a collection of spectacular works of modern art. The realisation that it was an album of aerial photographs only made it more compelling. There are many images that are breathtaking in their own right but the effect of combining them into a planetary photo essay is nothing short of outstanding. It uniquely explores the great diversity of Mother Earth while highlighting the beauty that is always present in her many forms.Everyone I have showed this book to has had a similar reaction. If you are looking for a gift for that person who is difficult to buy for because they seem to have everything, look no further. They are sure to be delighted.
I was really looking forward to receiving and reading this book - I had looked at it in the stores but it was plastic wrapped and, therefore, I could not see what was inside. However, once I had received it from Amazon and opened it, my eager anticipation gave way to annoyance and disappointment. The photographs of the earth from above are, indeed, spectacular and of the highest quality, BUT Edmaier has used (or appears to have used) the same (or variations of the same) photographs over and over again - even though the book is supposed to have four distinct themes, Aqua, Barren, Desert and Green. I own several books published by Phaidon and have been impressed beyond expectation with every one of them - not this time. I considered the book price to be reasonable until I opened it - now I feel as if I have been ripped off! With over 220 pages, I expected in the region of 150-200 different photographs. Yes, the photographs are different but most of them are just different views of the same subject - not what I expected at all. Overall, a nice coffee table book, but far too expensive for what you actually get. Very disappointing!

I read this book almost two decades ago and I just read it again. This is a book that deserves several readings. Sass has given us analogies to the understanding of madness that we can, for once, actually look at...opening up a new road to understanding "modern art" and chronic mental illness. Since madness is always a broken, puzzling departure from what is considered "normal"; a visual representation of this extremely personal and in most cases incomprehensible reality is very welcome. Louis Sass has given us a whole new starting point on a new psychic road map.
This book has a wonderful thesis wherein much modern literature is associated with traits of schizophrenia. Reading the mentioned literature is a lot of fun. In addition to recognizing the relationships to Sass’s text the books are enjoyable in and of themselves.

With an interpretation so rigorous and self-critical that it is almost cruel, Sass teases out the threads of experience joining madness to modernism. Unlike some who do this sort of work, Sass is well-versed not only in psychology and psychiatry but also in contemporary intellectual discourse, and makes sophisticated use of the work of figures such as Foucault and de Man in his reading. He argues provocatively, using literary, artistic, and autobiographical works as well as empirical data, that schizophrenia is not (as many say) a form of Dionysian primitivity but rather a kind of violent entanglement in the paradoxes of hyperconsciousness. This book is absolutely a must read for anyone interested in schizophrenia or in modernism. Luckily, Sass is a fine writer and makes the book quite an enjoyable read as well.
Louis Sass has written a fascinating comparisonof modernism and schizophrenia and relateddisorders -- I couldn't put this book down. Sass' knowledge of modern art and literature, coupled with his experience as a clinical psychologist and professor at Rutgers, makes this book. It's extremely well-written -- the language is complex, but by no means stilted and academic for the sake of being academic. Sass' words will catch you and draw you through fascinating discussions about identity, language, visual representation, and much more. He presents balanced observations and makes appropriate connections -- he doesn't romanticize schizophrenia. One story he relays expresses this perfectly (pardon my paraphrasing): James Joyce discussed the creative similarities between him and his daughter, a schizophrenic, with Carl Jung. Jung described the difference between Joyce's creativity and his daughter's seeming creativity by saying that the difference was that Joyce was diving down into the depths while his daughter was falling. This is a perfect analogy to put Sass' book into perspective. If you have any interest in issues of identity, psychology, and modern culture, you will want to read this book.
This is one of my favorite books. As a work on psychological styles and the nature of rationality, I rank it right up with The Greeks and the Irrational, by E.R. Dodds. The basic argument is that madness is not irrationality, but extreme and excessive rationality, and that the totalizing reasoning of madness shows parallels to the totalizing reasoning of philosophical, artistic, and literary modernism. This is an intriguing view in its own right, and it is a valuable response to the romanticization of madness by those such as Norman O. Brown, who declared that "schizophrenia is the dissolution of the false boundaries of self."I do have some reservations about this fascinating argument. First, I don't think Sass ever makes clear the nature of the connection between madness and modernism. Does he see the former as caused by the latter? Are both manifestations of the organization of an industrial society? Second, Sass doesn't seem to recognize that he is actually working within a well-established intellectual tradition. The psychological and aesthetic literature on decadence in the late nineteenth century, as exemplified by Max Nordau's Degeneration, saw both madness and avant-garde artistic expression as products of hypertrophy of the intellect. Third, there may be important differences between the deterministic world of madness and that of modernism. Specifically, the rationality of modernity can be seen as connecting causes and effects on a single surface of reality that neither reflects nor penetrates any other dimension. Madness, on the other hand, seems to work within a rationality of depth, giving thoughts and occurrences a metaphysical resonance.
While growing up I had several friends, and acquaintances, who were diagnosed as having schizoid personalities. I was curious, so I read several books on the subject and this is the only one that actually seemed to line it's theories up with what I knew from personal experience. Namely, that these were people who were hyperconscious. He did well in explaining how this could create distortions in viewpoint rather than enhancements. A few of my friends were even fans of the artists and philosophers referenced in the book as examples. His references to Foucault, his theory of the panopticon, and the empirical and transcendental doublet were also very insightful in explaining his theory.

This book chronicles the rise and abrupt end of supersonic flight via the Concorde jets. Lawrence Azerrad has done a nice job turning his passion for Concorde and his personal collection of related design, ephemera and imagery into a light design history of the jets.The book design is precise, well-considered and beautifully austere. I appreciate the look into this seldom-covered topic and the path Lawrence has taken from curating this collection to sharing it with the world through the book.My only quibbles are:-I would have loved the book form factor to be even larger to better highlight the imagery.-It would have been great to have even more cultural context and interviews with the principal creatives responsible to really flesh out the design history.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who's questioned/questioning/curious about their relationship with alcohol, whether it be in a sober moment realizing you can feel utterly grateful to be alive without outside influence or in the throes of a 48-72 hour hangover full of tears and existential crises (I didn't recognize I suffered that second part consciously until Ruby spelled it out). I found myself reflected throughout this book, sometimes in shocking and hilarious parallel, and it helps in recognizing just how connected and relatable we are to every other human in both triumph & joy and in our darker emotions and experiences. Ruby writes from compassionate place of common experience and comes across as a friend.Ruby thoughtfully explores and shares data woven into a nakedly honest narrative with gentle humor and lack of judgment. She carefully examines every aspect of the human existence, especially in how we socialize, and the possible differences in how we might experience each without alcohol, acknowledging the moments where we might use alcohol to assist or protect ourselves, and where we might not be realizing how it can contribute to greater harm, adverse results, and dulled clarity, both in our lives and in our collective consciousness. This book is full of guidance without being dogmatic, and while some of the subject matter can weigh heavy on the mind in prompting stark reflection, I find it balanced with plenty of opportunities for smiles and giggles.As a fellow privileged white, cis-gendered, able-bodied female, I appreciate her consistent acknowledgement of how our daily existence differs from the systemically oppressed and marginalized in our society and lacking the daily prejudices and violence BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) face. This is awareness I've committed to growing in myself, and she discusses how becoming sober curious can enable those interested in the same to step outside of ourselves and have more energy to act and uplift those who don't benefit from the privileges I know I possess without earning. Comfort and safety look difference from each perspective, but through incorporating insight from thought leaders and healers from all communities, she seeks to illustrate the benefits and provide guidance to free resources so that any human might benefit from this exploration, through better sleep, more balanced emotional responses/management, more energy, and beyond. I personally am experiencing an awakening to my own power and the control I do possess, however more easily I might be able to wield it than others.In previous attempts to moderate or take extended breaks from drinking, I found I was full of disbelief and an aching to return to my previous consumption patterns at the end of each stint. This time feels different, not only because I spent December examining and questioning my behaviors in the face of being laid off due to company financial troubles, returning to college, and the amount of hustle and clarity my life will require for survival, but because Sober Curious helps me take a softer approach and focus on what's being added to my life--not the deprivation mindset I used so many times before. I hope those who pick this book up find comfort and shared humor in the journey, even if that journey is just absorbing this knowledge before/without practically applying it to life. I know it's helping me in several ways, and for Ruby and her work, I'm forever grateful.
Thank you, Ruby Warrington, for writing what I was thinking in 2014/15 when I couldn't quite figure out what was "wrong" in my life - hello, it was booze. Although, I'm not curious about sobriety now at 936+ days (because for me, it's a better way to live), I am always curious about other people's paths and perspectives. Ruby's is relatable, relevant and a must read.
So much information, but not intimidating or lecturing. Choices abound here on how to handle your own alcohol profile. This seems to be a breakthrough concept. Don’t be afraid to be “curious.â€
Coincidentally I purchased this book while starting "Dry January" and let's just say this book is motivating me to go way BEYOND dry January. So many outlooks and facts about alcohol I have never known. I have recommended this book to countless people and given many new outlooks to those who could use them. Oh, and I finished in three days. A must!!! What a great author - now seeing what else she might have in store.
I came to Ruby's work through Material Girl, Mystical World and the chapter in that book on being sober curious intrigued me. I was so excited to get this book in my hands and it did NOT disappoint! I finished it in 3 days-- I couldn't put it down. I especially loved the chapters on sobriety + spiritual practice, and sobriety + social justice. It was so refreshing to see some real honest discussion about privilege and to see Ruby quoting diverse folks and perspectives in the book. Would definitely recommend getting a copy!
This book was an impulse buy, and I can honestly say, it has changed my life! Ruby Warrington's writing is incredibly honest and she writes in a way that makes you feel as if you're a longtime friend. This book is not just about getting curious about living an alcohol-free life, it's about getting clarity on all the different parts of yourself that you may have ignored, backed away from, or shunned. Ruby displays incredible bravery by peeling back the layers of herself, while inviting readers to do the same.
I gravitated toward's Ruby's book in the midst of an experimental year-long break from alcohol, in an effort to better understand myself, and as a part of this journey to re-evaluate my relationship with alcohol for the betterment of my life. I was honestly surprised by the large amount of profound statements and aha's I took away from this book, as evidenced by the copious highlighted passages in my kindle version. It was challenging and encouraging in all the best ways, and I've been recommending it left and right to friends who are either on a similar journey or not, because I think it asks questions that many of us won't dare to ask ourselves, but that are so incredibly necessary and potentially life-saving. I couldn't recommend this book more if alcohol has impacted your life in any way. This book isn't about stripping away a delightful pleasure or ritual, it's about helping you question anything that is holding you back from living your most full, healthy, and present life possible.
