About the Author

When the Nobel Committee announced the 2012 award to Chinese writer, Mo Yan, it was a name unknown to me. So I chose this collection of short stories as a sampler. It was a fortunate decision, for the eight stories here, chosen by the excellent translator Howard Goldblatt, range over two decades of his writing and reflect a life lived through a turbulent half-century of China's history. As a group, they are strange yet engaging, fabulous yet engaged, and surprisingly easy to read. Of course, I may yet find that Mo Yan the novelist is a very different writer, but I doubt it. The author himself in his playfully candid introduction breaks with Chinese tradition in viewing his short works as every bit as important as his longer ones, and there is a consistency of concern in all these stories that I cannot imagine altering when exercised on a larger scale. Oddly enough, the story that I would single out as distilling Mo Yan's vision is an homage to an older writer, Lu Xun. Entitled "The Cure," it depicts a father and son waiting under a high bridge to await the falling bodies of class enemies executed by the Armed Work Detachment, to gather the materials necessary for a folk remedy to cure a sick relative. The combination of stark historical realism with folklike elements that even verge on the surreal is a characteristic of all these stories, though the proportion differs in each case. "Soaring," in which a young bride develops the power to fly like a bird to escape a forced marriage, is a comic fable with an ugly twist. "Abandoned Child," the last story in the book, reads almost autobiographically in its denunciation of the official "one family one child" policy. Both attack the traditional Chinese attitude to women.The somewhat unfortunately-named title story ("Shifu" is an honorific for a master workman) is both the longest and the most recent. Its leading character, a victim of industrial downsizing, hits on an unusual way of making money, until he encounters some even more unusual clients. Social realism with a twist. Even more twisted is "Iron Child," a surreal tale set against the very real deprivations of the Great Leap Forward, about two children who learn to eat iron in the absence of real food; Mo Yan tells a similar story of himself eating coal as a hungry child. Two of the tales, "Love Story" and "Shen Garden," are more or less straightforward romances -- a banned genre when Mo Yan began writing -- though again with a twist. Be sure to check the Translator's Introduction before reading the second of these; this is the most human of the stories, whose warmth comes from the knowledge that Shen Garden is a metaphor for a later meeting of divorced couples.Perhaps my favorite in the collection is "Man and Beast," an almost phantasmagorical story about a soldier living out the duration of WW2 in a cave in the forest, becoming one with the animals around him, but living in fear of the foxes whose den he stole. This is an appendage to the author's RED SORGHUM, a saga set against the background of China's war with Japan. Although the story itself is relatively short, it gives a sense of what Mo Yan can do on a larger conceptual scale, and makes me eager to read his novels.
While I've read numerous Chinese writers in the past, I have never read a collection of short stories. Mo Yan's "Shifu, You'll Do Anything for a Laugh" collects a handful of his stories from the '80s and '90s. They are interesting enough but they are very quick, very abrupt, and have very little context.The longest story is "Shifu, You'll Do Anything for a Laugh." It is an enjoyable parable about a exemplary machinist who starts a bordello of sorts after his factory is closed. Other stories include "Iron Child," about an abandoned child who meets a spirit. The two of them roam the countryside eating iron during the Great Leap Forward. In "Soaring," a bride grows wings and flies away the day of her wedding. The comparisons to Kafka are valid because several of these stories include such fantastical situations. However, to understand the stories the reader should understand the historical contexts in which they were written.Unfortunately, the stories all end very quickly, often dispensing with the descriptions and resolutions that other contemporary Chinese writers use. Nevertheless, these stories are all quick reads and enjoyable in their own right.
This strange and unsettling collection of short stories by Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan is guaranteed to stick in the minds of its readers, not just because it is wonderfully written by a man whose country is not as open to foreigners as this book is, but because its reality is so far removed from what any of us have experienced or even imagined. Seven short stories and one novella create a sometimes mystical or mysterious mood, though that mood is oftentimes more akin to horror than to fantasy. Whether one should interpret some of the events described in this collection as dark humor, shocking dramatic irony, or simply as the shocking reality of the various Chinese speakers is a question which readers will have to explore on their own.Using Northeast Gaomi Township as his setting (the fictionalized name for Dalan Township where the author lives), Mo Yan creates fast-paced narratives in which nature often plays a strong part, not a benevolent nature, but the cruel nature of "tooth and claw." In almost every story, the main character, no matter how honorable, is foiled by outside forces, and sometimes by nature - always a victim with little or no control over his life and destiny.The seemingly light-hearted novella, "Shifu, You'll Do Anything for a Laugh," tells the story of a man who has worked hard for his entire life, suddenly terminated a month before his retirement. When he comes up with a unique way to earn a great deal of money, he feels so guilty that he eventually goes to the authorities to "confess," with surprising and darkly comic results. "Abandoned Child," by contrast, is a shocking story told by a writer (of what appears to be purple prose, judging from his introduction to this story) who finds an abandoned baby only a few hours old. The baby, of course, is a girl, her fate revealing the full horror of the One Child Rule and the life of an abandoned baby, nearly always a girl, along with the long-term effects on the country.In between these two stories are six others which suggest much about Chinese life - their long enmity with Japan, many legends and folk beliefs associated with nature, the position of women in marriage, and the belief that no matter how honorable one's intentions, the fates will conspire against personal success. The forced abandonment of children by parents conscripted to work for the state, the near starvation of country dwellers, the feeling that the individual is totally unimportant, and the fact that sex is real and love is not, are only a few of the themes which show a bleak picture of Chinese life. Happiness is not even to be a goal among the characters here. The writing is clear and unequivocal, and western readers cannot help but take notice of the contrasts between our cultures, and of these characters' power of sheer endurance in the face of hardship. Highly recommended as an introduction to Mo Yan's work.

I bought this book due to my love and involvement in local living history. This book is extremely informative, and accurate. It is geared toward the beginning history buff, or traveling explorer. It outlines the perilous struggle between the British, and the French for control of North America. Most specifically the Forbes Trail which was hacked out of the "Wild frontier" that was Pennsylvania in 1758. Engineered just three years after the disasterous Braddock expedition, General John Forbes along with his newly arrived 1st Battalion of rugged Highland Scots spearheaded a route through the Ohio Country to capture Fort Duqesne (Pittsburgh). Along the way leaving a wake of forts, outposts, and settlements that would shape the very heritage of Pennsylvania, and history of our nation. Old bed and breakfasts, vacation spots, historical sites, outdoor recreation areas, and annual festivals are just some of the things brought about by the daring endeavor. This book parallels history with modern day recreation, geography, and heritage. It is highly recommended for all history buffs. If you learned that thought General Braddock, Forbes and the British redcoats were dolts who left the real task of opening the frontier (then anything west of Winchester, Virginia and Carlisle, Pennsylvania) to the post revolutionary war Americans - think again. This is the story of of an undertaking in its time probably more monumental than landing on the moon. For all the heroic settlements hacked out of the vast forests, it was really this road that tamed the wilderness. A truly fascinating saga, with lots of illustrations for the visual learner.The National Road without a single McDonald's: who could imagine?

I received my copy of Quiet Strength from the hands of Coach Dungy himself on the day the book was released in Atlanta, GA. The humble man from Jackson, MI was wearing the Super Bowl ring as he handed me the autographed book.This is an extremely well written book! I was a big fan of Coach Dungy from his Tampa Bay Buc days (I am a Buc and Jaguar fan) and because like him I ended up in Indiana about the same time that he moved up here, I've followed his career up here--but this book unveals so much about the man and how his faith helps him to interpret the events of his life--both the good and the bad.What many people would consider insignificant events, Coach Dungy helps the reader to reevaluate and to see in their correct light. I think anyone who reads this book will come away a better person than they were before they read the book--truly a mark of a great book, but also a mark of the quiet strength that motivate Tony Dungy!
I honestly would not have picked up this book if I were not a huge Colts fan. Tony Dungy is very reserved, so I was expecting Quiet Strength to be dry and boring. However, it was the exact opposite. The book was inspirational, with unexpected bits of humor here and there.Dungy takes us through his childhood, spends the majority of the chapters reminiscing about his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and finishes the book with the Colts and their Super Bowl win. The book is not a book about football, but since football is a large part of Dungy's life, it is hard to imagine him writing a book about life's principles and practices when they are so tied to his life as a football player and coach. However, you don't have to know anything about football to enjoy this book.I am not a religious person, but Dungy obviously is. Throughout the book, he quotes scriptures from which he has learned or applied lessons. Dungy talks about praying before making decisions and about living life to serve Him. However, none of it came across as pushy. I am an atheist, but this book made me interested in reading the Bible for educational purposes.From this book, you get the feeling that Tony Dungy a real person with real highs and lows in his life. And yet through it all, he remains humble and strong. He truly cares and truly has a good heart. He is an excellent role model for people of all walks of life.When I finished this book, it made me want to be a better person. It made me want to arrange my priorities in life so that the most important things are placed first. You know, stop and smell the flowers. And for that, I thank Dungy and Whitaker for their message and hard work.On a side note, if you were expecting Dungy to talk a lot about his relationship with Peyton Manning, prepare to be disappointed. He talks about the Bucs more than the Colts. He mentions a few things in there about #18, but nothing that fans of Manning wouldn't already know.Overall, a good and easy read.
This book simply tells the life of Tony Dungy. There is so much to be learned of his character. I wouldn't label it has a personal development book that gives you step by step instructions . I knew almost nothing about Tony Dungy's life and career when I selected this book to give as a gift for Operation Kindness at our church (I thought the men in our military would relate to a football coach and grow spiritually from reading his memoir). When I received it, I glanced through it to see if I thought my brother-in-law would like it. I quickly became intrigued and bought myself a copy. I just finished the book and have to say it is one of my all-time favorite reads. Though I could not be more different than Tony Dungy, I learned so much about how to live my life as a Christian - I am blown away. I am eager to apply these principles in both my spiritual life and my business life.
This is a very readable book, especially if you like sports. It claims to "not be all about football;" but that can be disputed unless you look deeper into the football stories.Tony gives a lot of autobiographical examples (mostly about sports); but he follows with what he learned and how the learning affected his parenting, coaching, and relationship to God.We are using this in a men's Sunday School class that is "discussion based." We are not limited by a strict weekly schedule that requires that we cover a chapter per week, etc. Thus we can stop and chew the nuggets that Tony gives us. We use them to discuss how we grow, mature, relate to God; and affect others.There is a Study Guide; but I find it less useful in our environment since we are used to picking items to plumb. For a group that wants a strict schedule and some help with prompting questions, get the Guide.

This book is very lacking. I'm Chinese and my children are biracial; although I'm also an American, my side of the family is the typical immigrant family. I do love dim sum though, and I like the back of the book where it explains the origin of it; but the board book itself is very mediocre. The illustrations are amateurish and the whole thing has super short sentences (see photos for reference) that really doesn't tell you anything about the social dining concept of it. I will be returning this.
As an ABC (American Born Chinese), I like having these kinds of books to continue passing on a bit of our culture with the next generation. I've been eating dim sum all my life and I haven't tried some of the dishes (or knew what they were called!) ever. It's even interesting to the adults reading this! I think our little girl will enjoy knowing about these dishes when we take her out to eat dim sum in the future!
We read 3-5 books to our 28 month old son everynight. To keep from getting bored, I purchase new books every month to reflect the holidays/seasons. Although Chinese New Year is long past, we still read this book every night - along with Red is a Dragon and Round is a Mooncake! The pictures are gorgous; prose is clear yet still vibrant. This author has a real talent for creating age appropropirate material but not "dumbing it down" or being "too cutesy." Really brilliant piece of writing for young children.
I bought this book for my five year old grand daughter and was surprised that I liked it for myself. The dim sum illustrations are realistic enough to be useful for reference to call the dishes by their traditional Chinese names. There's also a nice story about family. I will order another copy for my friend in San Francisco who annually hosts a "staycation" in the City for her grandchildren. One of their destinations is always a Dim Sum restaurant and this will relate nicely with their activities.
After reading this book, our child DEMANDED to go out for dim sum. Great way to excite kids to try new foods!
We enjoyed dim sum for the first time the other day with our kids. I chose this book to acquaint them with the types of food and what they could expect at the restaurant. We had a lovely time.
As a mother to a mixed-race child (1/2 Chinese), I wanted my child to learn and enjoy her cultural traditions - which of course includes eating! This book is filled with all the elements of dim sum and does a great job illustrating the food items, table settings, etc. Would recommend for anyone who loves dim sum!
My daughter checked this book out from the library when she was 3, she loved it so much that we ended up purchasing ti for her as a birthday gift. She is 6 now, and it is still a favorite. This is a very simple book about a family eating at a dim sum restaurant, but the images are lovely. My daughter even likes the illustrations of different dim sum dishes on the inside cover. This is an excellent book.

I don't usually read friends to lovers stories and if I read a sports romance, it's usually football. However, I was looking for a book with less drama than my usual and the reviews on this one sounded good. These stories were good with interesting characters and a nice writing style. I'm so over the whole manwh*ore thing though, and almost brought it down to a flat 3 stars because of that. I decided that the story was good enough that my personal preference on that subject shouldn't affect the rating. So, if you're looking for a good, sweet read with reformed rakes, I'd give this one a shot.1 star = awful! want my money back!2 stars = bad but not horrendous3 stars = decent/good4 stars = really good! will probably read again.5 stars = excellent! definitely recommend and will definitely read again!
I love these books so much! These stories are new and refreshing. I've never read another book like them!Catching Caden is so funny! I love the nicknames and baseball and all of it. Its sweet and amazing!Benching Brady is incredible! It's sweet and heartbreaking. It seriously rips your heart out but then it puts you back together again and you have happy tears instead of sad ones.Stealing Sawyer is outstanding! This story everything. I can't even describe it, I just love it so much! It was bittersweet being the end of the series. But Samantha Christy characters never actually disappear and I love that so much!!

I loved this series, the characters each brought depth to the story and a lot of the daily challenges they faced felt realistic. I liked that though the storyline carries over from one story to the next but that each story could also be a standalone story.
I found the Perfect Game series on kindle unlimited. Three of the best romance stories I've ever read. It was so hard to stop reading to sleep or get to work and I couldn't wait to get back to each story. Then I realized I had actually read the last three books and immediately got the other two sets. I love stories, series, that show interpersonal relationships and how they develop. There wasn't one character I didn't like. The stories kept your interest from page to page and were difficult to put down. So, I read the other series of 6 books and started over again with the Perfect Game series, which I just finished a few minutes ago. You wrote strong women who weren't whiney or needy. The conversations among the men were honest ... Brutally so at times. Same with the women. The relationships were awesome to be a part of, two people trying to overcome tremendous odds and heartache, yet maintained their decency and honesty and kindness. Tough men, with heart. Thank you from the bottom of many heart for the hours of fun, enjoyment and smiles. Please write more of them, please.
A must read. These books grabbed my heart and wouldn’t let go. This was my first reading Samantha Christy, and I truly loved her books. As a baseball fan, the idea of getting hit by the homerun ball of a gorgeous player is humorous, but the story that follows is definitely swoon worthy. Book one Catching Caden caught my attention, but it was book two and three that kept it. All three books were quick reads for me as I didn’t want to put them down. I did return and read her earlier series before these because I just loved the characters and the way Samantha writes. But you don’t have to read those before you read these, I didn’t and still loved them all. Caden, Brady, and Sawyer were all characters that are swoon worthy, but I loved how Samantha writes them with their own strong character traits. The women they fall in love with are all strong, independent, dynamic women, and the story lines are so touching you won’t want to put these books down. Perfect way to get them is the box set!!! I know I’ve definitely become a Samantha Christy fan and will be eagerly awaiting her next book release now!!!

The contents of the book are fine, my issue is with the Kindle edition of this book, which is pretty bad. The letter 'm' is regularly presented as 'rn' (RN), hyphens in the middle of words that are not occurring at the page margin, and other such typos (which are doubly irritating when dealing with words originating in a foreign language, making it harder to guess whether they are correct or not -- which is difficult to double check even if you can read Japanese due to aforementioned difficulty in reading the kanji and kana) that are clearly the result of a poorly done PDF (or similar such program) conversion from photos of the physical book pages that was obviously not reviewed even a little bit for editing before it was put out for sale. The kanji (Chinese characters) and hiragana (Japanese characters) are tiny, blurry, and impossible to read, especially when they occur within a line of otherwise English text. Actually, the poor quality of this so-called kindle digital version is as you would expect from an illegally pirated online version. Unacceptable quality control and zero editing efforts.

I decided on a whim to purchase this book, and it is exactly what I'd hoped it would be. It has many prayers that I intend to learn and use. It has the romanji, kanji, and hiragana of the prayers, as well as an english translation.The only downsides are, although there are quite a few prayers, it does seem most of them are practically the same just with a paragraph ommitted or added. Also, at least on my phone, the hiragana is almost impossible to read. That said, I still strongly recommend this book, especially for the price.
I got the Kindle edition of this book. The section with the prayers were very difficult to readon the Kindle. Looks like someone scanned the pages--the print of the prayers was much smaller than the print of the introduction. Because this is not the fault of the book itself, I still gave it 4 stars because the readable content was educational--gave me more information on the Shinto religion than I could get elsewhere.The author was correct, at least in my experience, that a lot of the information on Shintoism is still in Japanese form of writing (kanji/hiragana) and would be daunting for a regular person like myself to tackle. Shintoism is the belief that everything has a spirit and we need to live in harmony with everything. Rocks, trees, etc all have spirits and are important to life. Each of us has part of the god (kami). The Shinto prayers and rituals are one way of connecting to the Divine spirit within.I will re-read this book on my laptop, using Kindle for PC. Hopefully, the content of the prayers will be legible and then I will update this review.
I'm sure this is a great book, but the kindle version print is too small and no amount of zooming in helps. Don't buy this on the Kindle
Highly recomend ring bound version because it doesnt have to be held to say your prayers.
I just received it at my door today, and I am pleased with what is contained in it. It is difficult to find a collection of Shinto prayers in the English language. This book collects some of the most useful prayers, and presents them in a much needed format. Scholars can judge the translation by reading the Japanese text. English speakers can understand the prayer. Also, the romaji (romanization of the Japanese words) is included in the book so that people can actually perform these prayers in the original language without knowledge of Japanese.
An extremely interesting and informative read, both for those learning about Shinto as a hobby or for long-time followers. The writing is clear and easy to understand, with the Japanese kanji, romaji and English translation set up very smoothly. Very happy with my purchase

I am going to give this book three stars because it is just more of the same. So-so. Honestly one of the things that I think this series has lost is pacing. Sarah and Nicholas’ story took 4 books to tell. It was witty, funny, surprising, and sweet. With all other books, the stories and characters are too rushed. There is nothing to savor. And honestly with each book, Ms Lynch has gotten more graphic with the sex. When did she become a smut writer? I had to warn my teenage daughter and several others that the smut levels are getting to be too much for teen/young adult. I hate to let this writer go because I was one of her first readers of Relentless, but I really don’t believe in her writing anymore. Not everyone wants smut and shock value. Some of us enjoy (an appropriate) and slow burn romance and in-depth character focus.
Finally, the day I have been dreaming of and dreading has come. With the release of “Hellion,†the Relentless series has come to a close. I am so thankful to have found this series when it was just finding its footing in the world, so that I could be there for all of Sara’s wild adventures, Emma’s second chance at life, Beth’s second chance with the man she has always loved, and finally Jordan’s chance to see that there is more to life than fighting, and that to save the world, one must find something truly worth fighting for.I have been dying to read Jordan’s story since first meeting her in Refuge, and with this final installment of the Relentless series, I was SO NOT DISAPPOINTED! I knew that, when the time came for her to meet her March, she would give him the chase of a lifetime. And BOY did she DELIVER! Jordan is still her spicy, snarky, and fierce self. However, I loved seeing her discover a devoted and tender side to herself that she was not even aware was there all along. Jordan has grown so much since first meeting Sara and getting the opportunity to advance beyond her years as a Warrior and protector. Jordan is a woman to be admired and her will to do whatever it takes to do what is right knows no bounds. You won’t want to miss out on this final chapter in the Relentless world. Prepare yourselves for the adventure of a lifetime!
It pained me to give this book 4 stars. It's not that it's a bad book -- her books have just become very formulaic. If you've read the previous books, you'll know exactly what happens. That's usually fine, but this time, the book lacked pizzazz -- Jordan wasn't a particularly interesting or funny heroine, and she was somewhat dis-likable at times. Her pivot from not wanting a mate to wanting one was very sudden to me, and I found that she and her mate lacked some chemistry.If you've liked the previous books, you'll like this one. It may not be your favorite, but you'll enjoy it.
I loved Sara and Nicholas's story, and often reread them together (flipping between books to get the scene from the other POV). I enjoyed the other stories, but they just weren't as good. I was excited for Jordan's story and very hopeful, but it just didn't work.Also, the series has slowly been increasing in the amount of sexual content in the books, but this really crossed over the line. I loved the way the author handled it in Sara's story (it was there, but really no details - it was sweet and beautiful). In this book it's uncomfortable to read.I also kind of wanted her to deal with the elephant in the room issue with her universe. All these orphans had their father's abandon them, and yet it's seen as normal and fine. There was one line in this book about it, but it was dismissed immediately as unimportant.
Another amazing book by Karen Lynch. I love how this author thinks and writes. Her stories are so amazing and sucks you in, in seconds. Anytime I open any one of her books I come alive in her stories. Karen Lynch did not disappoint in her last book of the Relentless series, “Hellionâ€. “Hellion†is told by Jordan’s POV. Jordan character is full of character, spunk, sass, and totally badass. As a reader of this whole series I really felt like I had a good idea of who Jordan is but in her story you really get to know the true her. Her character has so much depth. Her earlier life story was so touching. It was very entertaining reading about Jordan and her possible other person in her life. (not wanting to spoil anything). I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend this book and the whole enter series.
Omg Omg omg I just finished this and I am high on all the emotions I felt reading this!!!It is so perfect, I have wanted Jordan’s story as soon as Sara and Nikolas’ books were done and it was as brilliant as I knew it would be!! I adore that Karen Lynch has everyone we love in each book so we never are without them while we travel new journeys to find HEA for our striking crew!!!Ok ok back to Jordan, I mean what more can be said other than she is BA incarnate and it shows In This book. She’s fierce and stubborn and she never lost that in this!! Demon activity has increased leading to major earth shattering revelations and our fiesty heroine is caught dead in the center! Not to be outmatched we meet her hawt alpha half and the real chaos begins. I love the alpha half in this book ( although I had some pretty serious thoughts on ending his ability to be a man at one point). He is her perfect half and I loved seeing them work things out. There is a bit more steam in this book than the first few but you won’t hear any complaining from me!! We are also front row and center for some fresh demon blood in this book that we have never seen before.The action was intense and the tension was top notch! The storyline flowed perfectly. There’s enough action to bring up your blood pressure followed by mysteries and twists to keep the reader engaged until the very last page! I’m sad that this is the last in the relentless series, I have loved every moment spent in these books and will contribute to re-read them all for years to come!
