The writing is good. He takes the reader from initial discovery to the Saddam era. The author breathes life into the dry subject of discovery and artifacts decoding. I took one star off for the excursion into Ethiopia. It added nothing to the story and wasted a chapter. The notes and bibliography are very good. For more on the subject are: Myths from MesopotamiaBy Stephannie Dalley 2008 reissued. She is a current day excavator in Mesopotamia. Robert Silveber's book - Gilgamesh the King, (is a tale that melds Gilgamesh into a Sci-fi tale).
The story begins in 19th century Iraq with the accidental discovery of the until then unknown Epic of Gilgamesh, and unlike most history books, works backwards in time slowly revealing the mystery of its origins and meaning - this chronology works well, not unlike an archaeological dig. The first half of the book is devoted to two unlikely and largely unsung heroes of the Victorian era who first found and deciphered the tablets, George Smith and Horzmud Rassam. Rassam is probably the most important and unique revelation of the book, as Damrosch restores an unfairly maligned scholar to his rightful place in history and perhaps some immortality. The second half of the book jumps backwards from the 19th century to when the Epic was written, discussing the history of the Assyrian kingdom, and the library where the tablets were buried. The tablets were buried around 700 BC when the city was sacked, and thus the Epic lain forgotten from that time until the 19th century. Had the city not been sacked and the tablets not buried, it is likely the Epic would have been lost forever, as most tablets from that period did not survive otherwise.This is a fun tale, both Smith and Rassam encompass dramatic lives as underdogs who rose from obscurity, overcoming Victorian prejudices of class and race. If nothing else the first half of the book is worth the price of admission, in particular Rassam's side adventure to Ethiopia. Damrosch's literary interpretation of the Epic (Ch. 6) provides valuable insights, such as the importance of cedar trees, making it less "foreign" (both in time and culture) and more universally human. I certainly came away with a new appreciation of the tales message of the quest for immortality.The Sources and Notes section includes an up to date guide of recent translations of the Epic, recommended reading before deciding which translation(s) to pursue.
The book itself is a good read. It is readable, enjoyable, and I dare say many can learn from it. It includes facts and events that are presented without being boorish or dry. Despite this, the book should not be relied upon as a historic account because the author presents his own biases and opinions mixed in with the actual facts of the stories. Each chapter of the book presents a different type of story that the author relates to the Epic of Gilgamesh. At times most obviously near the end of the book he begins to be less effective at convincing the reader of his comparisons.It is important to note that the author of this book is a Professor of Literature and not of History. When reading the book, it is not difficult to see this because the author takes liberties that a historian usually would not. He does a great job of creating an environment where an appreciation of the Epic (and the work it took to make it available) can be developed. Where he shows his hand, is when he infuses thoughts and opinions into characters and historical figures that are just guesses on his part, and presents them as fact. Unless there are tablets that state these things specifically, we cannot "know" what the thoughts and motivations behind certain people and characters were. We can make educated guesses but many motives are lost to history.The next problem I saw with the book is that the passages he includes from supporting works aren't the best possible for each scenario. This is most obvious in the final chapters of the book when the author attempts to parallel former dictator Saddam's book with Gilgamesh. When he presents parts of Saddam's work it is not relevant to Gilgamesh at all. Rather, he highlights "the raciest scene in the book" followed by the story of the rape of Zabibah. This seems rather out of place when trying to draw parallels.In other parts of the book, when recounting parts of the Epic of Gilgamesh the author concentrates on Enkidu's lovemaking with Shamhat the harlot as well as Ishtar's attempt at seducing Gilgamesh. One wonders why the author concentrates on scenes of this particular type for analysis. In addition, other parts of the book seem out of place. For example, there is an anecdote about Rassam's daughter that appears to serve no purpose. Why would the author single out one of his many children to write about when Rassam had several children. Why only Rassam's daughter, and not George Smith's children also?Despite these few minor complaints, this is a good and well written book. The insight into the history of the Epic is welcome.
I bought this book in order to read the story of George Smith, the young genius who assembled and translated Tablet XI of the Gilgamesh Epic but then, sadly, died just as his promising scholarly career was really taking off.Along with it, I got several more great stories, including:1) the story of Hormuzd Rassam, the Iraqi who made great discoveries for the British Museum but was never accepted by the British elite despite his archaeological and diplomatic achievements.2) the story of Esarhaddon, a paranoid Assyrian king, and his scholarly and ruthless son Assurbanipal, who assembled a great library and dismembered his enemies during a 40-year reign.3) the story of the Gilgamesh epic itself.4) the "search for the historical Gilgamesh".5) the way the Gilgamesh epic is still used by modern authors from Philip Roth to Saddam Hussein.I find Smith's story especially compelling, and I find it fascinating that we now have so much detailed information about the ancient Assyrian kings.
of course, one must first read Gilgamesh, in all translations---i prefer the original cuniform tablets, but the stephen mitchell translation will do. it's the oldest book in the world--- records the Flood 2000 years before the Bible and was probably inspired by an alien race that interacted with the ancient mesopotamian peoples of that age. But it is also a very great story in it's own right and is well worth reading. the story of it's discovery and translation is a treat.

The only complaint is that I had to purchase the paperback as well to access to the pearson examine engines and the codes for the premium content.With two weeks of preparation, I was able to study immensely from book and all of the extra content from Pearson and have successfully achieved my Cybersecurity Analyst (CSA+) certification.With honesty, I can say that this book will provide you the knowledge to be successful; however, I must caution anyone because you must take the time and understand the concepts.I am very pleased that this book helped me achieve my CSA+. This book was written before the first version of the exam was released and is structured according to the CompTIA CSA+ exam objectives. Unfortunately, the objectives are not organized in a manner conducive to learning the material. Thus, the book is just as disorganized and, at times, incomprehensible. This book will probably serve you well if you're already familiar with the material, but don't expect to use this book to learn material from scratch -- it really is a "cert guide" and not a "teaching" book.
I passed this exam using this book as well as the certmaster program from Comptia. This book does a great job at telling you exactly what the topics are in a broad sense. It's like they took the exam objectives and divided them up in the chapters and used them as headings. It is a dry read that just presents facts about everything in a neat and tidy format. It doesn't try to relate to the reader on any personal level. The online practice exams are nice. The web interface is responsive and you can choose to include all of the questions in the book. The answer explanations not only explain why the correct answer is correct but why the wrong choices are wrong. It is purely a good exam prep resource, which is what I was looking for and it proved invaluable. However, what they fail to do is get into reading/diagnosing of logs files and output from all of the various tools/programs described in the book. A lot of the questions on the exam concerned the reading of output from the tools mentioned in the book. The tools are all described by function, and various attacks are all described, so you have the information to almost piece them together completely. However, after the sheer amount of this type of question on the exam, I can say I wish it did a little more hand holding and actually walked through a few more examples of output data for all the tools. Still passed!
Well, I used this book (almost exclusively) and I passed.I tend to prefer the Pearson IT books to the Sybex and "All-in-one" offerings, so I purchased this book in order to help me study for CSA+.For some background, CSA+ is intended to be taken after you have passed some of CompTIA's other exams, such as Network+ and Security+. CompTIA's highest security cert is CASP; CSA+ is intended to slot in between Security+ and CASP, so it's an intermediate level security cert.As others have noted, you may need more material or more explanations than just what's in the book. However, most of this will be on the internet, if you feel confident that you can research what you don't know. Also, I've previously done other CompTIA certs (Network+, Security+, Cloud+, Linux+), and that knowledge helped me fill in various gaps that the book didn't cover. (Mostly Linux commands, in my opinion.)I purchased the upgraded test pack on the Pearson website; once you have the book, you can pay $15 for two extra practice exams you can take in the Pearson testing software. By the time I got to the 4th exam, I was able to get an 87% on the practice exam. (The publisher considers 70% passing.) When I went to take the real exam, I scored 835 out of 900, with 750 being the minimum passing score.As other reviewers mentioned, there are some simulated lab questions that the book doesn't help with. However, there weren't many, so don't let the simulated labs discourage you too much. Also, if you've taken other CompTIA exams with simulated labs recently, the CAS+ labs are basically the same, except a bit harder (for me, at least).Good luck-
This book is well written. I initially use Sybex to study for the exam, and I found that their line of questioning is unlike Comptia's questions. However, when I used CSA+ by Troy McMillian, I found the questions to be on par with Comptia questioning style. The book used real world senarios that is very similiar to Comptia. I would recommend this book to anyone who is attempting to pass CSA+.
Update: I passed my test on the first try. I ended up going through this book about four times total as part of my own study method. I used this book as my main study material. I felt it had the most detailed explanations of the three available books, along with more descriptions than you probably need. I would recommend this book.Previous: I’ve read his book once so far, but will read it another two times before I actually take my test. Out of the three books available for the CSA+ I would say that this one has a vey straight forward way of explaining each objective. I felt there were some areas that had way too much explanation that could have been cut shorter. I would definitely pair this with the other books as they all explain things a little differently that may help you understand the topic better.
I used this book in conjunction with videos and another book that just had practice exam questions. I would recommend this book. I can't say if other books are better or worse because this was the only book I used to read the material covered on the exam. I passed the actual CySA+ exam so I don't see any reason to give it less than a 5 unless I want to be picky on wording or typos. It's worth the buy.

A previous review noted they had an outdated version. This is the new 2006 version that I just received. Great read and a must book to keep on board if you are cruising any of these waterways.Contains Restaurants, Marinas, Gas, Food Supplies Side trips and Safe bays to Anchor along the way etc.Pictures and history of each town and port you will be approaching. Shipped free and makes a great gift for any boater who be might traveling to the covered regions. Nice coffee table book if you live in the regions too!
I bought this mostly for Lake Champlain, but it seems to be a fairly comprehensive guide to boaters along the Hudson River, through Lake Champlain and on up to the St. Lawrence River. It offers information on the local marina's and sightseeing. I wish the maps had been a little more comprehensive, but in general I think I will find alot of use for the book.

Provides a good basis for trip planning, but be aware that things change quickly. We used the 2015 edition in November 2016, but restaurants, museums, and attractions we saw in the book have closed. Maps are very helpful.
I've been buying Lonely Planet for at least 30 years to places all over the world and wouldn't plan a trip with one. I tell my friends it is my traveling "bible".
Very informational and good for those of us without a lot of time to read. Lots of good suggestions for tours...ideas on what to do with limited time.
I was expecting some pictures in this book. There are none. However, it's a great guide nonetheless.
The Lonely Planet Guide to Croatia was very beneficial when traveling around the country. It pointed out sights to see and gave good descriptions. I found it to be very useful.
Practical and up to date info. I am setting up my next vacation based on it.
The guide was very good; I only wish it had a more extensive section on words and phrases from English to Croatian. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.
The book is nicely organized but didn't include hotels in the city center of Hvar Town and Postira, so that was disappointing.
