One of the best books I've read in a long time! Well-written commentary on what exactly is going on in Northern and Western Africa. Gives you a great insight on Jihad. This is an area that most people including myself know nothing about. The author traveled with the locals and lived with them;fascinating and well documented. Written in the form of a travel log. You will come away with a great appreciation and much better knowledge of what is going on in that part of the world. I bought several more of this book for birthday gifts for friends. Unusual in that not only it is informative but an easy read.
The book is an invitation for a nice wandering in between several marvelous places. From Morroco to Mali. Even though knowingly dangerous , I am ready to go.

If I couldn't have a Biblical novel by Jill Eileen Smith, this is what I would want. Jill does a superb job crafting the stories of characters who don't have voices in the Bible, while remaining true to Scripture and encouraging readers to read--or re-read--the Bible accounts for themselves. Each mini-story is written with deft attention to detail and three-dimensional, authentic voices. These ladies sound like ones I would meet in everyday life and maybe offer a cup of cocoa.More than that, I appreciated Jill's thoughts on each woman's relationship with God, how each woman's story applies to us, and how we can cope when, well, life doesn't match our dreams. In this season, I find myself identifying especially with Hagar, but everyone had something valuable to say. Jill's end-of-chapter questions also probe deep, encouraging real introspection. If I had her ear, I would ask her to make this a full-blown Bible study with an interactive workbook.Rumor has it Jill is planning another book like this soon. All I can say is, hurry, please!

I read the Bible, some commentaries on the Bible, and the occasional books that we read for our church group gatherings. When Jill Eileen Smith released a "non-fiction" Christian living book based on 12 women of the Bible, I wasn't sure about the book but knew that the author would have wonderful, fresh insight into what lessons we can learn from these Biblical women. So I dove in. Wow, am I glad I did. The book is incredibly well-written, with the author's trademark writing style that flows so easily, engages from the first sentence, and leaves the reader pondering and praying long after the last page is read.Each chapter begins with "If I Were ___" that puts the reader in first person narrative into the heart of each woman. Then the chapter transitions into "In Our World" to put the same issue the Biblical woman wrestled with into our current day. The imaginative Biblical scene again comes to life in the next section entitled "Imagine with Me" where the author takes the reader further down in the Biblical woman's life and then the chapter concludes with a lesson learned (such as "From Regret to Freedom" and "From Duplicity to Trust") and points to ponder, as well as questions to take the lesson further. The book spans such well-known women like Eve, Sarai, Hagar, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah but also focuses on the lesser known or celebrated women like Adah (Noah's wife), Melah (Lot's wife), Dinah, Aneksi (Potiphar's wife), Tamar, and Zipporah. No matter how or why life has derailed for each of these women, it is clear that God has been there through it all and there is always hope in Him.This is a book that will have you running to the store to buy for your sisters and friends. A terrible book, one that tried to throw everything into a short story, with not everything even fitting. Poorly written as well, I could excuse the lame story line if the writing was at least interesting

About the Author
Paul den Arend grew up in the Netherlands and has been travelling for most of his adult life. He studied art history in Salamanca, Spain, wrote reports for the Dutch Embassy in Santiago de Chile and studied Chinese in China. In between, he has been working as a tour guide. For many years he lived in Rome, Italy and guided groups of all backgrounds through the city. He has been a guide in the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's and the Galleria Borghese, but he also loves to show groups around Sicily or Tuscany. His guidebooks reflect a profound love for the Eternal City and the many stories about its beautiful piazza's and landmarks.

Why oh why can't someone publish a book about this church, the grandest on earth, with pictures of the entire church, with each side altar, from the altar where the Pieta is, and then, counterclockwise around the entire interior, then the Nave, with the information provided here. There isn't a single color picture, except the cover. Or any picture for that matter. I mean at least 2 to 3 pages for each area, with a plate, suitable for framing of each area, statue, tomb and object of interest. The information is great, but a very disappointing book, if a souvenir to remind you about the church is what you want.
Very helpful and inexpensive. There is so much to see and be aware of in the Vatican that this guide was of great use. Please read it before you go into the Vatican. FYI, go with a Vatican tour or an individual guide recommended by a friend with experience. The people selling you tours on the street only want you money and the tour is horrible.Groups can be thirty to forty people and you cannot understand what the guide is saying. Some do not take you to the Rafael rooms which are the most amazing art in the Vatican museum.
This book was a god-send. It not only gave you the layout, but also the history behind what you see. I got this because I am hearing impaired and wanted to understand about all the features of the Vatican - art work, statues, frescos, etc. As it turns out its even better than a tour guide as not only can you read ahead of your visit, but while you are going through the Vatican you can use it as a walking guide.
Great guide! I ended up buying the book and took it with me while inside St. Peter's and reading what each statue was and what it stood for. I ended up having people follow me through the Basicilla listening to me read!
I used the book as a "tour guide" and it was perfect! It guides you very fluently and easily through the Vatican museums and st Peters basilica. I wish every place I visited had a guide like this. The recommended ice cream was a fine recommendation!
This book is inadequate. The text is written for elementary school level . There is no mention of the Pinacoteca which contains one of the great collections of religious Renaissance paintings in the world! All the photos are black and white and the book has the appearance of a self-published cheap paperback. Don't waste your money on this one.
Was great to have prior to the visit to be more familiar with the setting and things to look for.
An easy read written very simply for almost all to understand. It includes a good mix of historical fact with a logical tour.
