Pretty pleased with this set overall so far. My only complaint is that in the accompanying book, the dialogues are very complex right from the get-go and get progressively more so fast. And the English translation is not printed line-for line-beneath the Irish. The English translation comes after the Irish dialogue, which often means a lot of page turning to keep track. And even when not turning pages, it is not easy to match. More of a drill at times would be nice, too. However, the intracies of the language, including grammar and pronunciation, are well explained, and that is much needed, as Irish is unlike many Europeans languages in many respects. The book is also well thought-out mostly, very readable and accessible, and the CDs very clear. I think if you want to learn Irish, this would be a good addition to your learning curriculum. You might like to include other sets as well, though. But I would always suggest MORE when learning a language. Think of how much work you put into learning English as a child.Erin go bragh!
I started learning Irish on Duolingo and this is a great supplement to that. Duolingo doesn't always have audio for Irish and I bought this because it's obviously helpful to hear how the words are pronounced.
This is one of the only teach yourself Irish sets I've found that has traditional methods for learning: grammar, aural practice, verbal practice, exercises, vocabulary, cultural notes -- none of this "learn by hearing only and mind-numbing repetition" nonsense which leaves you totally unable to read the language. Irish Gaelic is (if nothing else) quixotic when it comes to pronunciation & spelling, so to see how the word is spelled vs. how it is pronounced is vitally important. Tá sé seo fiú a cheannach.
I found Gaelic study difficult and slow going--it just doesn't sound like it spells! With an auditory component, this package seems to present the tools you need for an effective study. Just allow plenty of time and patience.
I have to confess that I'm not that far in the course, but I am very familiar with the Living Language approach, as I have the Japanese, Russian, Polish, Korean, and Chinese courses as well. That having been said, the thing I like the most about this course is the audio. Other courses are more about reading AND listening, and rarely have just audio exersises. they may have a few here and there, but they do not have the amount that Living Language offers. And I believe that you need to have sufficient audio only exposure in order to understand people when they speak to you. Overall the book is a great start in the language too. The grammar notes are short, but clear and concise. The vocabulary is practical and up-to-date. The exercises are easy and yet good for the topics covered in the lessons. the only complaint I have is that there are no vocabulary lists for the 'readings' given in most lessons. You are expected to look up any unknown words you want to know. In the Korean textbook the readings have a vocabulary list (be it smaller then the main list), but this is the only complaint I have. And all you have to do is look up a word here or there per lesson really. Also, this book does not lend it self to one particular dialect like most Irish textbooks. Instead it teaches you the Official Standard used in Ireland, which is based on all three major dialects (Ulster, Connacht, and Munster). Thus this book is good for getting a good grasp on Irish, and while not being as comprehensive as the Japanese, Russian or Chinese courses, it is still good for a beginner. And Best thing is you can go on and learn any dialect you would like and take your Irish further!
Having audio paired with most of the words and phrases in the lessons is very helpful in learning pronunciation. The grammar sections are the best I've seen so far. They actually do a good job of explaining the syntax, grammar, and conjugations. Most other materials usually avoid this and try to teach the student by imitation alone, with a note that if you actually want to understand the grammar, you should go read a book on it.However, I was disappointed with the limited material in each chapter. The reading exercise and practice exercises are almost verbatim the same things that were said in the dialogue exercise. They essentially took the dialogue exercise and rewrote it into sentences where you fill in the blanks, and then again into a paragraph that you read. There are a lot of other words that are introduced in the example sentences in the grammar sections, but you never have an opportunity to practice them or hear them more than once, so your functional vocabulary at the end of a chapter is limited to about 20 words out of the 40 they actually gave you.The book is smaller than I was expecting - about the size of a novel, not a conventional text book. It should be expanded to include a lot more practice and reading exercises with a wider vocabulary and more varied sentences that actually challenge the student's comprehension - not just their ability to copy a couple words from the dialogue transcription.
It goes a little fast ... but it's thorough. I'm on my old Buntus Cainte book, Duolingo and this. I'm covered.

Bodie Kane and Marcus and Elton and Gruber often allude to an implicitly US biased market tone, which, as global capital efficiency increases, is becoming a liability.This is an excellent, highly recommended work for an introductory text, a support text for intermediate studies with a particular focus, or for support and review for advanced students. Cuthbertson and Nietzche have every reason to be proud, and "Quantitative Financial Economics" should be used by undergraduate and graduate programs, and widely available in reference libraries.
Most Finance graduate students with Engineering background will find this book very useful for the following reasons.a) The book builds upon concepts in a very modular engineering-like style (from basic stats, basic finance concepts, CAPM, APT, C-CAPM, Inter-temporal Asset Allocation, SDF and Affine Term Structure Models etc).b) The math is very similar to engineering math (not econ math with proofs by contradiction etc).c) Unlike the other theoretical books in the field, this book provides theory & empirical studies one after the other. So you can see how theory can be applied and what are some issues found in the empirical studies.All in all, it is a great book for a Finance PhD students, especially to those without Economics background.
This book contains one of the clearest discussions of the CAPM model that I have found anywhere. It is also quite rigorous. It also contains one of the most vague treatments of utility functions in existence. Overall this is an outstanding book on financial economics. Potential sophisticated readers should be aware that the book does rely almost exclusively on time series analysis and therefore is subject to the limitations associated with the same. But for a good clear introduction of the subject from a time series point of view the book is really hard to beat.

The author has taken care to explain the concepts in a lucid manner to prepare the student to take on the concepts at a greater detail. He even touches upon complex issues like stock market 'anomalies' and models of noise trader behaviour. The discussion on 'rational bubble'is also quite helpful. On the whole, a very good text to understand competing theoritical models in financial economics and their applicability in various markets like stock, bond and currency market.

Abbott's series has been instrumental in helping my students to prepare for the ISEE and SSAT. The format is user-friendly, the concepts well-organized, and the explanations clear and helpful. My one criticism is that I wish the book offered more practice material in the form of practice questions and tests. Tutoring over the years, I have always had difficulty finding practice tests online for students, which is unfortunate because most students need to take a practice test multiple times to get the preparation they need. This book, then, should offer 3 full-length tests at the very minimum. SAT/ACT prep books typically offer at least 5 full-length tests, so I don't think that is too much to ask. The practice drills, while helpful, need to be longer and more challenging to give the students more of an opportunity to hone their skills.

I bought this to prep for a climb up Shasta. As other reviewer(s) point out, the book has alot of good information about the surrounding area. I was most interested in the different routes to the top. It provides 15+ routes and a 0.5-2 page description of each. Most important and most helpful is the large, foldout, topo map that comes with the book. The routes described in the book are labeled and drawn out on the map. You may want to check if your seller still has the map in the little pouch in the back of the book. The provided map also saves you from spending another $5+ on buying a map elsewhere.
The "Mt. Shasta Book" is a bit of a misnomer. The title would imply that it is a mountaineering guide to the Mount Shasta volcano in northern California, which it is, but it is so much more. In addition to describing the fourteen climbing routes on the mountain (with variations), the guidebook also details many hiking trails, ski and snowboarding routes, boating, rafting and kayaking rivers and mountain biking trails throughout the region. In addition, the book adds many interesting photographs and maps to complement the text. It is the only guidebook that I am aware of that presents a plan for hiking around Mount Shasta.The second edition (March 2001) completely updates the guidebook in terms of visitor information and contacts, photographs, trail conditions, and a wonderful new 17" x 24" 7.5 minute topographical map of the mountain with all trails and routes clearly marked and with an index to place names. The new edition has 48 more pages than the first, but some of it is due to a slightly larger, easier to read, type. Nevertheless, many of the sections have been expanded, especially water activities and snowboarding routes. New sections have been added to tell the history of the first climbs of Shasta, the placement of a geodetic monument on the summit in the 19th century and the discovery of glaciers on the mountain.The Mt. Shasta Book is highly recommended. Those who own the first edition will want the revised edition as well.
