Pretty pleased with this set overall so far. My only complaint is that in the accompanying book, the dialogues are very complex right from the get-go and get progressively more so fast. And the English translation is not printed line-for line-beneath the Irish. The English translation comes after the Irish dialogue, which often means a lot of page turning to keep track. And even when not turning pages, it is not easy to match. More of a drill at times would be nice, too. However, the intracies of the language, including grammar and pronunciation, are well explained, and that is much needed, as Irish is unlike many Europeans languages in many respects. The book is also well thought-out mostly, very readable and accessible, and the CDs very clear. I think if you want to learn Irish, this would be a good addition to your learning curriculum. You might like to include other sets as well, though. But I would always suggest MORE when learning a language. Think of how much work you put into learning English as a child.Erin go bragh!
I started learning Irish on Duolingo and this is a great supplement to that. Duolingo doesn't always have audio for Irish and I bought this because it's obviously helpful to hear how the words are pronounced.
This is one of the only teach yourself Irish sets I've found that has traditional methods for learning: grammar, aural practice, verbal practice, exercises, vocabulary, cultural notes -- none of this "learn by hearing only and mind-numbing repetition" nonsense which leaves you totally unable to read the language. Irish Gaelic is (if nothing else) quixotic when it comes to pronunciation & spelling, so to see how the word is spelled vs. how it is pronounced is vitally important. Tá sé seo fiú a cheannach.
I found Gaelic study difficult and slow going--it just doesn't sound like it spells! With an auditory component, this package seems to present the tools you need for an effective study. Just allow plenty of time and patience.
I have to confess that I'm not that far in the course, but I am very familiar with the Living Language approach, as I have the Japanese, Russian, Polish, Korean, and Chinese courses as well. That having been said, the thing I like the most about this course is the audio. Other courses are more about reading AND listening, and rarely have just audio exersises. they may have a few here and there, but they do not have the amount that Living Language offers. And I believe that you need to have sufficient audio only exposure in order to understand people when they speak to you. Overall the book is a great start in the language too. The grammar notes are short, but clear and concise. The vocabulary is practical and up-to-date. The exercises are easy and yet good for the topics covered in the lessons. the only complaint I have is that there are no vocabulary lists for the 'readings' given in most lessons. You are expected to look up any unknown words you want to know. In the Korean textbook the readings have a vocabulary list (be it smaller then the main list), but this is the only complaint I have. And all you have to do is look up a word here or there per lesson really. Also, this book does not lend it self to one particular dialect like most Irish textbooks. Instead it teaches you the Official Standard used in Ireland, which is based on all three major dialects (Ulster, Connacht, and Munster). Thus this book is good for getting a good grasp on Irish, and while not being as comprehensive as the Japanese, Russian or Chinese courses, it is still good for a beginner. And Best thing is you can go on and learn any dialect you would like and take your Irish further!
Having audio paired with most of the words and phrases in the lessons is very helpful in learning pronunciation. The grammar sections are the best I've seen so far. They actually do a good job of explaining the syntax, grammar, and conjugations. Most other materials usually avoid this and try to teach the student by imitation alone, with a note that if you actually want to understand the grammar, you should go read a book on it.However, I was disappointed with the limited material in each chapter. The reading exercise and practice exercises are almost verbatim the same things that were said in the dialogue exercise. They essentially took the dialogue exercise and rewrote it into sentences where you fill in the blanks, and then again into a paragraph that you read. There are a lot of other words that are introduced in the example sentences in the grammar sections, but you never have an opportunity to practice them or hear them more than once, so your functional vocabulary at the end of a chapter is limited to about 20 words out of the 40 they actually gave you.The book is smaller than I was expecting - about the size of a novel, not a conventional text book. It should be expanded to include a lot more practice and reading exercises with a wider vocabulary and more varied sentences that actually challenge the student's comprehension - not just their ability to copy a couple words from the dialogue transcription.
It goes a little fast ... but it's thorough. I'm on my old Buntus Cainte book, Duolingo and this. I'm covered.

This is fast becoming one of my favorite books, simply because it packs so much into one volume (where I previously had to turn to three). "Quantitative Financial Economics" rivals Bodie, Kane and Marcus, and Elton and Gruber in scope and quality.It almost goes without saying, but this book is much better than anything by Frank Fabozzi.No one book can contain everything, but lord knows Cuthbertson and Nitzche try. Bodie Kane and Marcus and Elton and Gruber often allude to an implicitly US biased market tone, which, as global capital efficiency increases, is becoming a liability.This is an excellent, highly recommended work for an introductory text, a support text for intermediate studies with a particular focus, or for support and review for advanced students. Cuthbertson and Nietzche have every reason to be proud, and "Quantitative Financial Economics" should be used by undergraduate and graduate programs, and widely available in reference libraries.
Most Finance graduate students with Engineering background will find this book very useful for the following reasons.a) The book builds upon concepts in a very modular engineering-like style (from basic stats, basic finance concepts, CAPM, APT, C-CAPM, Inter-temporal Asset Allocation, SDF and Affine Term Structure Models etc).b) The math is very similar to engineering math (not econ math with proofs by contradiction etc).c) Unlike the other theoretical books in the field, this book provides theory & empirical studies one after the other. So you can see how theory can be applied and what are some issues found in the empirical studies.All in all, it is a great book for a Finance PhD students, especially to those without Economics background.
This book contains one of the clearest discussions of the CAPM model that I have found anywhere. It is also quite rigorous. It also contains one of the most vague treatments of utility functions in existence. Overall this is an outstanding book on financial economics. Potential sophisticated readers should be aware that the book does rely almost exclusively on time series analysis and therefore is subject to the limitations associated with the same. But for a good clear introduction of the subject from a time series point of view the book is really hard to beat.

The author has taken care to explain the concepts in a lucid manner to prepare the student to take on the concepts at a greater detail. He even touches upon complex issues like stock market 'anomalies' and models of noise trader behaviour. The discussion on 'rational bubble'is also quite helpful. On the whole, a very good text to understand competing theoritical models in financial economics and their applicability in various markets like stock, bond and currency market.

Abbott's series has been instrumental in helping my students to prepare for the ISEE and SSAT. The format is user-friendly, the concepts well-organized, and the explanations clear and helpful. My one criticism is that I wish the book offered more practice material in the form of practice questions and tests. Tutoring over the years, I have always had difficulty finding practice tests online for students, which is unfortunate because most students need to take a practice test multiple times to get the preparation they need. This book, then, should offer 3 full-length tests at the very minimum. SAT/ACT prep books typically offer at least 5 full-length tests, so I don't think that is too much to ask. The practice drills, while helpful, need to be longer and more challenging to give the students more of an opportunity to hone their skills.

I had gotten the Lower Level version last year and i am very satisfied with both. It really prepares my son and boots up his confidence for the exam. We are very thankful.
It was ok but the test offered for free on the ISEE website was just as helpful. I would also say the free flash cards offered on quizlet & other sites are more helpful.
As with most things test related, any practice is good practice. Seems to be a decent study guide although I would not solely rely on it
This worked well for our child who used it as a self-study guide over a couple weeks before taking the actual test. It has a practice test, and ERB publishes a free practice test, and that seemed like enough practice.

I bought this to prep for a climb up Shasta. As other reviewer(s) point out, the book has alot of good information about the surrounding area. I was most interested in the different routes to the top. It provides 15+ routes and a 0.5-2 page description of each. Most important and most helpful is the large, foldout, topo map that comes with the book. The routes described in the book are labeled and drawn out on the map. You may want to check if your seller still has the map in the little pouch in the back of the book. The provided map also saves you from spending another $5+ on buying a map elsewhere.
The "Mt. Shasta Book" is a bit of a misnomer. The title would imply that it is a mountaineering guide to the Mount Shasta volcano in northern California, which it is, but it is so much more. In addition to describing the fourteen climbing routes on the mountain (with variations), the guidebook also details many hiking trails, ski and snowboarding routes, boating, rafting and kayaking rivers and mountain biking trails throughout the region. In addition, the book adds many interesting photographs and maps to complement the text. It is the only guidebook that I am aware of that presents a plan for hiking around Mount Shasta.The second edition (March 2001) completely updates the guidebook in terms of visitor information and contacts, photographs, trail conditions, and a wonderful new 17" x 24" 7.5 minute topographical map of the mountain with all trails and routes clearly marked and with an index to place names. The new edition has 48 more pages than the first, but some of it is due to a slightly larger, easier to read, type. Nevertheless, many of the sections have been expanded, especially water activities and snowboarding routes. New sections have been added to tell the history of the first climbs of Shasta, the placement of a geodetic monument on the summit in the 19th century and the discovery of glaciers on the mountain.The Mt. Shasta Book is highly recommended. Those who own the first edition will want the revised edition as well.

Some previous reviews are strange. "Catfish" apparently reviews the wrong book (this is not a small volume of mostly black and white prints); others complain about the text being preoccupied with description of print variations. In fact the prints are beautiful on lovely paper, and the variations should be of interest for anyone finding other Hokusai prints outside this book (many run so often as to wear out the blocks).My only quibble is that the eminent Mr Forrer's English is choppy and a small but pervasive distraction. For instance he has "oxidated" for oxidized, "deficiency" for defect; and a sentence "No less than three or four different states have been identified for some of these designs, which testifies to their great popularity at the time" (meaning, three or four variations are known of some of these, attesting to their popularity) is typical. I note Forrer's Prestel/Royal Academy book on Hiroshige does not have these flaws.After browsing this volume for several weeks with morning coffee I just came across four erotic prints in the rear. Flowing figures completely different from the usual Hokusai small people battling across landscape. No discussion of print variants here; they were more limited editions. A delight that illuminates a return to "The Great Wave", contrasting formalisms.
This book gets 3 stars for the beautiful reproductions of Hokusai's work. There are approximately 130 plates, most of them in gorgeous color. But I found the text by Mr. Forrer to be very disappointing. There is an opening chapter of around 30 pages which is meant to give you some information about Hokusai and Japanese art in general. It is very straighforward and written in a dry manner. I was hoping for more of a biographical sketch of Hokusai but did not get it. Mr. Forrer writes that "apparently Hokusai lived for his art". Is that supposed to mean that he didn't have a life? I doubt that is the case but unfortunately it is how Mr. Forrer excuses the fact that he doesn't really tell us anything about the man who is generally thought to be the greatest artist Japan has ever produced. The descriptions that accompany the plates are equally disappointing. Hokusai worked mainly in woodblocks and Mr. Forrer spends a lot of time telling us about what variations (reproductions of which are not included) of these woodblocks looked like. He does this on page after page and I found it annoying. Mr. Forrer hammers home the same points on page after page rather than trying to make each plate interesting and distinctive. He keeps pointing out Hokusai's use of linear perspective and of his western style of painting skies (showing individual clouds rather than the traditional Japanese method of just painting a flat wash with some haze for the entire sky). This is interesting the first couple of times you read it but gets tedious after awhile. There is much more that could have been said about these works.If you just want to look at some pretty pictures you will enjoy this book. If you want a more complete picture you will need to look elsewhere.

This book with its beautifully reproduced prints deepens the pleasure and prolongs the remembrance of the exhibit called Japanesque (at Legion of honor, San Francisco) relating the profound influence the Japanese art had on the impressionist art in Europe.
I am not sure if I was just seeing a bad batch, but I went through a stack of copies of this book, and overall found the colors washed out and faded looking. I know many of the orignal prints have faded, but I have seen better examples, and they could have found better versions to scan/photograph. The choice of prints to show seemed decent. I didn't read the text in depth. The size is aparent from the description; it is decent, not a coffee table size, but good visibility.
Forrer starts this book with about 35 pages of historical notes, which sketch Hokusai's career and the social milieu in which he lived, albeit with some maddening omissions. The timeline on page 37 notes a brief period in which he was "reduced to penury" - something the narrative seems to skip over.No matter, this book is really about the artwork: 130+ works, prints with a few drawings, in color or B&W to match the original work. Opaque, bright paper carries the printing well. Colors tend not to be saturated, something that disappointed me until I realized that it's probably true to the natural fading of inks 150-200 years old. In fact, the one real annoyance in the printing (plate 85) could have gotten its over-processed look from a misguided attempt to pull more contrast from a faded print than the print had to give.A few paragraphs describe each image. The more helpful notes identify the site of a scene, or pick out "product placement" of the publisher's name among kanji characters that I could not make sense of unaided. A few times, descriptions of the obvious seemed un-needed. In a number of places, the author added art-historian notes on the different inking of other known impressions of an image. That could have been helpful in a more scholarly study, but the brevity of this catalog makes such detail seem a bit much.None of that detracts from the art itself. Although the pieces aren't presented chronologically, they cover many parts of Hokusai's career. They include extracts from several series of prints, including the famous "36 Views of Mt. Fuji." No series appears in its entirety (the brevity I mentioned earlier), but I was happy to see selections from groups that I had not heard of before. Of course, the later work includes a few specimens of Hokusai's shunga - the erotic images that so startle a Western eye. This doesn't catalog Hokusai's work exhaustively or give the most detailed history of his life. It does, however, present a gorgeous collection of his work, a collection that goes well beyond what you might expect of an introduction.-- wiredweird
