The setup works like this: the two opinionated TV cooks confront different ingredients on each show, then make their way through to the finished dishes that make up a meal. The recipes reveal themselves along the way. What's most important here--and it shows up in the cookbook--is that there is no one way to cook. The point of the book isn't to follow recipes, but to cook from the suggestions. And Julia and Jacques have many, many suggestions when it comes to home cooking in the French style. And many tips, for that matter. Take chicken, for example. "Not everything I do with my roast chicken is necessarily scientific," Julia says. "For instance, I always give my bird a generous butter massage before I put it in the oven. Why? Because I think the chicken likes it--and, more important, I like to give it." Julia sets her chicken on a V-rack in a roasting pan in a 425-degree oven that she then turns down to 350 after 15 minutes. Jacques roasts his bird at 425, on its side, right in the pan. "To me," he says, "it's very important to place the chicken on its side for all but 10 minutes of roasting." After 25 minutes he turns his chicken over, careful not to tear the skin, and lowers the heat to 400. The bird finishes breast-side up for the last 15 to 20 minutes. Just J & J , Julia and Jacques. A gem of American Television . Julia, a woman that found her call after trying everything . A lady with class and a master chef with excellent teaching skills and a lot of humor. My hero. Jacques , another master chef with a remarkable career and superb techniques , together to offer to the everyday day cook like me, a wide selection of classic dishes and meals to be produce at home. Joyfull experiences to share , because cooking is to show love in a meal.
Wonderful to watch these 2 working together. They enjoy each other's company and Jacques was so lovingly helpful with Julia in her declining years. I made their bacon, egg and dill pickle potato salad - yummmmm. I read a complaint that the receipts were too simple coming from such great chefs. I don't think haute cuisine was the point of this offering. It was to encourage people to try new things and enjoy the experience. I'm an above average home cook and I learned something new or innovative with each show. I'll watch it again and again.
There is a moment in this series that says it all for me: They are preparing a pork roast, I believe. Julia turns her back to fuss over one thing or another and Jacques, with a wink to the camera, scoops a few more garlic cloves out of a ramekin on the counter, dices them and slips them into the sauce he is making before she can turn back around.It's a classic example of the good-natured parrying that makes this cooking show my all-time favorite: Throughout the series the two of them gently fuss over which type of pepper to use, how long a roux must cook, and yes, how much garlic a recipe should have, as only old friends and accomplished cooks could. What a wondeful reminder that cooking is not an exact science.And watching the ease with which Jacques plays his little prank is a reminder of just how much skill he has. He never seems to hurry or work hard, and yet everything gets done in no time.This 4-DVD set is a delightful collection of moments like that, and a most practical guide to preparing an inspired collection of recipes ranging from creme brulee and roulade de chocolat to roast chicken and mashed potatoes. It will help any home cook master the basics, and reach for new heights of gastronomic glory.Yes, Julia is clearly in her twilight, and Jacques does most of the real work. But Julia is there every step of the way, which is a joy to see.As noted here in another review, the DVD provides the best format for emulating what you see on the show. Jacques is a true master and as a result, he makes everything look easy. The first time you try to follow along as he assembles a souflee, carves a chicken or rolls an omelet, you'll realize it's not as simple as he makes it all look. But fear not, you can pause, rewind, and even go frame-by-frame to study his techiques. It really helps. (Just remember to protect your remote in plastic wrap.)Yes, the DVD case is kinda cheap, though I have trouble getting the discs OUT, not keeping them in.And yes, there is an unskippable commercial at the beginning of each disc. I go and drink coffee for two minutes if I'm starting a fresh disc. Otherwise I use the position-memory feature on my DVD players to skip them. Neither strikes me as overly burdensome.Buy it. Savor it.
I love these two together. They work very well together. All the light hearted bantering back and forth makes it relatable to watch. Like two siblings catching up in the kitchen.
I had to order this twice. The first DVD set came and the second DVD stopped at eggs and wouldn't play. The second DVD set did the same thing but then I watched desserts at the end of the DVD and tried eggs again just hoping and it worked. Very strange. If you start eggs and just get commercials then try to watch dessert and go back to eggs on the menu and it may work.

This is a brief book, less than 200 pages, with roughly 25-30 chapters consisting mainly of brief anecdotes or at most sketches, of Irishmen, and one or two Irishwomen, who came into contact with Lincoln or played meaningful roles in the Civil War era. Some the reader may already be familiar with, such as Thomas Francis Meagher, profiled admirably in "The Immortal Irishman"; Archbishop John Hughes who forcefully advocated for Irish immigrants' human rights in New York City; or Jennie Hodgers, who passed as a male soldier for the entire war and long afterwards. Others I was less familiar with, such as the Catholic priest Bannon, who traveled to Ireland in 1863 on behalf of the Confederacy to proselytize against Irishmen coming to America to join the Union army by playing up anti-Irish sentiments.Niall O'Dowd, the author, is a prolific writer on Irish and Irish-American themes. He is the founder of the website Irishcentral dot com. His broad and deep involvement in the topic benefits the reader, in that O'Dowd does an excellent job of inserting examples of anti-Irish sentiment throughout the United States in the antebellum and wartime eras, and the political exploitation of that by the proto-Republican party to which Lincoln belonged.Unfortunately, the book is sloppily written with many obvious copy-and-pastes that were not edited properly (such that, for example, an antecedent refers to the wrong person); duplicative or nearly duplicative sentences within lines of each other, hanging paragraphs, etc. I downgrade my rating one star for this sloppiness. Also, there is nothing in the way of reference notes to enable certain assertions to be followed up on.Bottom line, this is a light and easy read on the subject, written with affection if not a great deal of editorial rigor.
First, my family goes back to the early days of Ireland, especially along the southwest coast. My Ancient Gallic Family, O'Sullivan-Beare, traces its roots back thru the Eoghanacht Geneneologies. Thus I have no dislike for the Irish who suffered so much in coming to America in the 19th Century. Additionally, I have studied the American Civil War for some 35 years. While I do not to profess to be an expert an educated knowledge of the causes, the people, and the War itself is at hand.I agree with the review by Mr. Burt above."Lincoln and The Irish" is a book poorly written with incorrect historical comments (see Jackson for one), and repetitive text that brings up the same "points" without need. The book appears to have been "written" in great haste, thrown together from articles in magazines and thesis writings of unknown candidates, with little editing by qualified reviewers. I must say it was written and published for an audience which is well below that which James McPhearson, Gary Gallagher, Shelby Foote, Timothy Smith, Bruce Catton, or Allen Guelzo address.I suggest not wasting your money on this book, and wish I hadn't.
Interesting but with a glaring error. Mr. O'Dowd at several points refers to Stonewall Jackson's death as taking place at Fredericksburg when it actually occurred as a result of a gunshot wound fired by his own troops at Chancellorsville. Easy book to read and despite the error as noted entertaining.

For the first time, the close relationship Lincoln had with the Irish, from Irish nannies to employees in the White House to great figures like Archbishop Hughes and Thomas Francis Meagher is shown. The forgotten role they played in the Civil War, especially the Pennsylvania 69th at Gettysburg isHidden history at it's best.A great read and not just for Irish Americans

The downside of reading Sapolsky's latest work is it will cause you to question long held beliefs about guilt or innocence, good and evil, moral or immoral. This book describes the neurological processes of the brain. Most interesting was the numerous times that one's brain chemistry is doing something other than what you think you are thinking. For example you know that you are not prejudiced against the "other" but your brain knows better.For me a difficult read. Lots of unfamiliar terms and territory. The wonderful jokes and anecdotes greatly lightened the load. Their inclusion in uber-small type was a disappointment.The basic message is "it depends." Nature , nurture, early childhood experience (including abuse), and peer pressure all have an impact on behavior. There is no "silver bullet" that explains individual behavior.This is a scholarly work. The pop culture rewrite probably would run 200 pages without the plumbing and wiring diagrams. The frequent recaps and summaries help keep on on track.A final irony. We are told that the human brain doesn't reach maturity until the mid-twenties. Many of the cited studies were carried out with students as subjects. Are we studying immature brains?

He artfully conveys meaningful, relevant understanding and context for the hopelessly complex topic of what drives human behavior. A review that led me to this book described it as one of the best works of non-fiction the reviewer had read, and it is hands down the same for me. It is also likely to prove one of the most meaningful and important books I ever will read because of how fundamentally it has me re-thinking, well, everything.

The Honeynet Project is a nonprofit security research organization made up of about 30 volunteers, that was set up to learn the tools and techniques that blackhats use, and then share the information that was learned. This book is divided into three parts with the first part covering what honeynets are, some history and various iterations of honeynets. Part II is dedicated to analysis and forensics, and I found the Network Forensics chapter gave very thorough coverage to the subject. Chapter 14 Reverse Engineering was also very good. Part III begins with a profile of "The Enemy" in Chapter 16 Profiling, which was outstanding and provides some very good insights into the mind of malicious actors. I would have liked a chapter on Apple's OS X or iOS in this section, as only Windows, Solaris and Linux Compromise and Analysis are covered. Overall it was well worth the purchase price, and I would highly recommend picking it up.
What's great: This book has a lot of scripting examples that can be used directly. Scripting and Windows personalities are thoroughly covered. Examples of how to apply this for network security and incidence response were greatly appreciated.Could be improved: as an extreme novice, I would like more detailed step by step set up instructions

The Honeynet Project grew out of an informal group of computer experts who decided to take an active role in tracking breakins to computers. Existing countermeasures, like firewalls, and frequent patches of discovered firmware bugs, were fundamentally defensive. And did not actively try to understand the capabilities and intentions of the crackers/intruders/blackhats.This second edition describes what they term Gen 2 Honeynets. These are more sophisticated than Gen 1 networks of honeypots, where a honeypot is a computer expressly deployed for blackhats to intrude upon. The book delves in some length on how to construct a honeypot and a honeynet. Various configurations are possible. A honeypot could mimic a Microsoft computer or a Solaris or linux machine. There is more emphasis on the actual machine being linux, because of the open source nature, which has led to tools like Snort, Ethereal and Sebeb being available. Indeed, Snort-Inline and Sebek were developed by this project.Lots of craft keyboard sniffing (Sebek) and network sniffing (Ethereal). Plus, variant arrangements like having one computer pretend to be several honeypots are described. Or another, where a honeynet might be physically distant from the production net, but linked to it via a VPN.All this is scarcely the last word. The blackhats will certainly devour this book to concoct their next generation techniques. You can safely predict an eventual third edition of this book.

This shows me their depth of understanding and allows students to consider another solution strategy they may not have considered. I highly recommend reading this book and trying the techniques offered. I believe you will see a difference in your classroom. About the Author
Suzanne H. Chapin is an associate professor of mathematics education at Boston University. She is interested in mathematics curricula, the education of the gifted, and how to further the mathematics achievement of economically disadvantaged students. Over the past twenty-five years, she has directed many projects and written many books in these areas. Suzanne is the coauthor of Math Matters: Understanding the Math You Teach, Grades 1-6.Catherine O Connor is a professor in language and literacy, and in linguistics, at Boston University. She teaches and conducts research in linguistics and in education, the latter with a focus on language use in classrooms. For the past ten years, she has been director of the Program in Applied Linguistics in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston University.Nancy Canavan Anderson is an elementary and middle school mathematics educator in the Boston area. The coauthor of Good Questions for Math Teaching, Grades 5-8, Nancy is also a Math Solutions consultant. Currently, Nancy is a doctoral candidate in mathematics education at Boston University.

I've been reading a lot of literature on Math Talk and how, when done correctly, it increases your students' understanding of mathematical concepts. When I started reading this book, I knew it would help me further develop my ability to facilitate it in my classroom. I like how the book introduces 6 techniques at the beginning and then goes into greater detail. I especially like how they use classroom examples to demonstrate the techniques. Although you may have heard of many of the techniques before, and probably already use them on your classroom, this book will be beneficial to experienced teachers since it explains the why behind them and to a depth that is invigorating. It makes me excited to come to school each day!
The great strength of this book is that it shows how to implement a method for improving students' thinking and communication skills in adverse circumstances, and to overcome students' resistance and our own occasional bad starts and blunders. Much of this information is presented in the form of examples that showed what the teacher intended to do each day, how it played out in the classroom, and what the teacher did next.The authors began their own use of Math Talk in 1998 with about 100 fourth graders, mainly from economically disadvantaged homes where English was not the primary language. Few of the students had shown potential in mathematics. Seventy-three percent of them tested as "below average" on the TOMA-2 test.The students were divided into four math classes of about 25 students each. The "Math Talk" strategy emphasized high-quality discourse, especially universal participation, attentive listening, and (over time) clear answers to the question, "Why do you think that?" By the end of the first year, teachers in other subjects noticed the students' striking ability to verbalize their thoughts and explanations. After two years, none of the students tested as "below average", and 77% tested either "above average", "superior", or "very superior".I was impressed with the insights that students developed as they interacted within the framework (and behavioral rules!) provided by Math Talk. I recommend this book highly, but teachers who are thinking about implementing Math Talk can save time by being aware of places where the authors go wrong.The authors note, correctly, that one aspect of "mathematics" is a language, whose words and symbols have meanings that are social conventions. Those meanings cannot be arrived at reliably via Math Talk. Therefore, we should teach students the standard meanings, thereby saving time for topics where Math Talk really shines.Having read this advice from the authors, I was perplexed to see them praise cases where teachers used Math Talk to arrive at definitions of triangles, "fair" games, and mathematical symbols. What those cases show isn't the successful use of Math Talk; instead, they show how easily we can convince ourselves that we're "deepening students' mathematical understanding", when we're actually herding them, subtly, toward accepting established social conventions.But don't let these issues prevent you from reading this book. Please note, too, that there is now a second edition, in which they may already have been remedied.
I had to buy and read a lot of professional development books for my Elementary Education degree program and this was one that I actually enjoyed reading. It is filled with tons of helpful examples and ways for using the math talk strategies in real classrooms. I used the discussion strategies during student teaching and it was awesome to see and hear my little 3rd graders after we had worked with our math talk for a few weeks.

This is the approach which I have been looking for since I mentored fellow students in math. I realized then that each student was working from a different base, so that to get them on a common page requires this level od discussion; exploring how others understand the task at hand.

This e-book "The Six Miracles of Calvary" is just like the other book with the same title except for the first few pages giving a note on Mr. Schaeffer. Otherwise, the content of the books are the same alluding to the mysteries of the wonderful, exciting miracles that took place on Good Friday while Jesus was being crucified on the Cross of Calvary. This book, as well as the other version, will make a marked change on your life. Get a fresh glimpse of Jesus' love for you and me and think on these things!
Great little book to past the time. Just don't take it into a sauna! Lol, 160° temp made the binding come unglued. My mistake! Helps to understand what Christ's death on the cross meant.
Great information but written by a replacement theology person. Seems like the person who rewrote the book would have removed the erroneous statements about who actually killed Jesus. We did. Nevertheless, good information otherwise.
The book The Six Miracles of Calvary is one of the most important books that a Christian can read, apart from the Bible itself. William Nicholson delves in great detail and with great insight into the events surrounding the Crucifixion. His understanding of how these events support Christ's accomplishment of paying for the sin of the believer lends a real intellectual support to the faith of the Christian. Reading and understanding this book can be a life-changing event.
A wonderful account of the Easter story. The author of this message has such insight! He brings out happenings which would go unnoticed. I was fortunate to receive one of the original books, which I'll keep as a keepsake. However, I've given this out to many friends.

Tremendous!! Can't say enough about this book. It was concise yet exhaustive and conclusive. Praise God for Calvary! That is what the reader will conclude after reading this book. One cannot help but know that Calvary itself was indeed miraculous.
